We’ve just had someone come up to us as we’re getting our 2 year old into the car to be told that we need to think of our child as it is -5 degrees (it’s actually 3 degrees but not really the point) and they’re not wearing a coat or socks and she is a social worker and couldn’t not say something… we have literally just come out of a warm shopping centre and their shoes and coat are clearly under the pram and they had a blanket that they have put behind them. I thought you were supposed to put children in the car seat without coats on anyway??

OP posts:
Moveoverdarlin · 18/01/2024 23:36

Would you wear no socks out of a supermarket for 15 seconds when it’s two degrees? I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t dream of saying anything, but yes I think that’s pretty poor. I’m in the South West and it was minus 7 at 7am today, it’s particularly cold and a baby needs to be wearing a hat, coat and socks, even in the car. She wouldn’t have been a social worker.

It just looks really substandard, I would say the same about an adult in flip-flops. I would assume they can’t afford shoes.

Msmbc · 18/01/2024 23:39

Surprised by the number of people here with 2 year olds that don't take their socks and gloves off! And there's just no way i can get tights on my daughter either, she fights me every step of the way and then constantly tries to pull them off screaming even more cos she can't

Wetblanket78 · 18/01/2024 23:42

My son never kept his socks and shoes on in the pram. Hates having hot feet. I'm the same.

TwistTheRibs · 18/01/2024 23:43

@Moveoverdarlin, my child can and she does. I have tried repeatedly to put them back on her and she pulls them off instantly.

She is not walking on the ice...I am carrying her so yes, it is okay for 15 seconds. And no I would not WALK on ice back indoors. Nor expect her to even more importantly!

TwistTheRibs · 18/01/2024 23:45

@Mielbee, same here. People are more than welcome to try dressing my child when she's in a shoe/sock/hat/glove throwing mood. Would like to see you try 😂

TwistTheRibs · 18/01/2024 23:46

Tights are a good shout though. So I might try that from now on.

HMW1906 · 18/01/2024 23:59

I wouldn’t have put the coat on as would take longer to take it off again when you got to the car although I would’ve put either the coat or a blanket over them in the pram. But I’d have socks on.

Having said that we lost a sock whilst out today (10 months old likes to pull them off constantly) so my DS only had 1 sock on whilst walking across the car park, I had put his blanket over him, but he was absolutely fine.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 19/01/2024 00:15

2 year olds are a menace!! Always pulling their socks off and saying they don't want their coat on.

Just ignore and carry on with your day!

OP doesn't live in the south West, though, so the fact that it was minus 7 there is totally irrelevant.

You know a baby needs to be wearing socks. I know it. OP knows it. However, her baby doesn't and will take them off as soon as they are put on. Should OP turn a 15 second walk in the cold into a 20 minute one by constantly stopping to put socks back on, or should she just get on and get her child into the car and put the heating on there?

Justwrong68 · 19/01/2024 01:17

When my DS was a baby in this weather he shook his gloves off onto the pavement about 5 times, then a woman came round the corner and shouted that he should be wearing gloves!

What absolute drivel this is.
It's -7 where you are yes...if you look at a weather map say, you will see that Britain is quite big and different areas of the country experience different weather conditions and temperatures too.

What?

GintyMcGinty · 18/01/2024 19:57

OP's child or the bogus social worker?

Actually I meant my own frequently sockless child 🤣

DollyPartonsBeard · 19/01/2024 08:37

In my experience, interfering busybodies who feel the need to 'officalise' their need to feel superior by claiming to be social workers or off duty police officers or vague 'health professionals' are very, very rarely the thing they claim to be.

DogLover24 · 19/01/2024 09:05

The passive aggressive ignorance on this thread is disgusting.
I do agree that after the baby kept removing the socks, I would've found another way to briefly cover the little feet, even just for 15 secs but perhaps OP did actually do this and the busybody only saw the bare feet for half a second as the baby was being lifted into the car? Either way, even if OP didn't and it was a 3/4 min walk to the car, that doesn't give anyone the right to degrade, tell off nor question the OP! Not in person nor on here!!! It doesn't reach the threshold whereby public intervention is necessary!

OP have you tried Sock-Ons? They go over socks and are amazing. They're like tiny fabric 'harnesses' that seem to hold them on and aren't easy for the child to remove but easy for the parent :) Saved many a sock of DDs! 🧦

DogLover24 · 19/01/2024 09:07

These things are worth every penny. Not just for preventing losing socks but keeping tootsies warm! 🧦 🧦 Unsure what size they start or go up to but can be worn very early in life.

i think she was right

no shopping centre is that hot on day like today that a kid wouldn’t need a coat and shoes

if you walk round shopping centre now most adults would have coat on

if your schedule wont wear socks then id force the wearing of shoes so they can’t take them off

it’s absolutely freezing outside

Really?! What kind of shopping centres are you going to where most adults are in coats?! Our local one is the metro centre and it’s always roasting in there, I couldn’t bear being in a coat. A handful of people wear them and I always think they must be absolutely boiling!

GodspeedJune · 19/01/2024 09:11

I think I would have told her where to go. My DD constantly pulls her shoes and socks off, I’ve only stopped it by putting tights on her underneath her trousers. She isn’t allowed to wear a coat in the car seat either, it’s not safe.

Check the link I posted a few mins ago! Game changing 🧦

Bearbookagainandagain · 19/01/2024 09:22

Yeah, she was ridiculous and I would have told her to mind her own business.
My 2 yo regularly refuses jacket, hats, gloves... So we use blankets and footmuffs for short distances it's really not worth the fight. We keep the parenting battle for morning routine when jackets is absolutely necessary.

Luckily he is starting to understand that clothes keep warm! A few days ago he refused to get dressed altogether, wanted to go to nursery in nappies. I opened the front door wide open, he changed his mind 😆

WonderLife · 19/01/2024 09:45

My youngest is 6 and I'm still trailing after her carrying her coat and gloves in this weather...
And yes, I have a coat/scarf/hat/gloves and a hot drink!

Katiesaidthat · 19/01/2024 09:55

Well, yes, he should have been wearing socks and coat. My daughter would chuck her sunglasses and hat in the middle of the July sun and then start crying that the sun hurt her eyes. She would also pull at the parasol. I got told off by a man in Greece when this happened, and we hadn´t realised, as she would be so surreptitious. We had to retrace our steps, and get the glasses and hat back! So if this is your case, I sympathise with you.

Children and babies should not be wearing coats in the car, regardless of the temperature.
They can wear thin layers but absolutely not coats. What stupid advice to give when you clearly don't know what you're talking about.
A basic google search will explain why.

I was in Eldon Square yesterday with it's huge open doors at either end and even that was boiling.

If I pop over to the shop that's a minute away, I often run over in just trainers (no socks) and hoodie. I wear slippers in the house, why would I go upstairs to get socks to only wear them for five minutes?

Nambypambypoo · 19/01/2024 17:49

This thread is very interesting as the majority on a recent one about a 5 year old not wearing a coat in the cold didn’t seem to think it was a big deal and that the mother had done something wrong by insisting she did. I wasn’t one of them. People are strange.
