We’ve just had someone come up to us as we’re getting our 2 year old into the car to be told that we need to think of our child as it is -5 degrees (it’s actually 3 degrees but not really the point) and they’re not wearing a coat or socks and she is a social worker and couldn’t not say something… we have literally just come out of a warm shopping centre and their shoes and coat are clearly under the pram and they had a blanket that they have put behind them. I thought you were supposed to put children in the car seat without coats on anyway??

I saw little twins in a buggy today with freezing cold hands. The dad pushing them had gloves and a hot drink. They looked miserable. I felt like saying ‘where are their gloves’ but didn’t. So I understand.

Maybe they wouldn’t wear them? I’ve tried all sorts of gloves and mittens for my 18 month old and she absolutely won’t wear them. Had quite a few thrown out of the pram and even the ones on a string get removed before we’ve left the house.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 18/01/2024 21:44

Next time:

’How kind of you to take an interest’.

And move on.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 18/01/2024 21:44

Guaranteed that wasn't a social worker - seen far too many shocking things to be get het up about no socks on a kids feet.

MrsSucculent · 18/01/2024 21:46

No socks is odd. It’s too cold for no socks even in the car.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 18/01/2024 21:47

I was walking home today with my two DC, almost 2 and 6 months in the double pram. Both wrapped up, hats, gloves, thick clothing etc. An eldery woman walked past me and said "its not the weather to be taken those babies out" i just responded by saying they needed fresh air and went about my day.

People will always have something to say. Ignore OP.

TMess · 18/01/2024 21:48

I don’t see the point of arguing over socks/coats, I really don’t. I can see one of my sons out the window right now. It’s -13 and he went out “for a second” to take something to the road, and now he’s playing around for the last ten minutes or so. He’s wearing shorts and a tshirt. I expect if he’s cold he’ll come in and get the multitude of weather appropriate clothes with which I provide them. 15 seconds from a warm shop to a warm car is nothing, and standing there talking to you was just going to keep her out in the cold longer, wasn’t it. I highly doubt she was anything more official than Local Busybody.

Kit60 · 18/01/2024 21:50

My DC constantly pulls her socks off so she has a lot of thick tights all seasons but summer and isn’t bothered about them. Also understand that costs can’t be worn in car seats so cardigans over long sleeved tops are best I find. I would have looked at bare feet though in this weather- as I look at women wearing ballet pumps without tights and think they must be freezing tbh. But I also would have imagined your DC ripping them off. I see lots of boys wearing those leggings with socks attached.

xxxjanxxx · 18/01/2024 21:53

tbh Im wondering why your 2 year old is out at 6.40pm, rather than being at home and in a proper routine getting ready for bed? <misses the point of your question>
(you'll probably class me as another interfering busybody - even though I'm not a social worker 😏)

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 18/01/2024 21:58

I had a random man scream at me that I was a terrible mother because my baby wasn't wearing a hat. On the tube. If you've ever been on the tube, you'll know it's very rarely anything below boiling point. And I was holding his hat in my hand...

People are bonkers. Try to ignore them.

You can get coats that fold over the hands like scratch mits on newborn babygrows. My DC always had North Face ones but I’m sure other companies probably make them too.

Also for OP- tights under trousers (even for boys) and/or lace up shoes stops sock removal. It’s too cold to be barefoot even in the car.

Jf20 · 18/01/2024 22:03

I’d be a little concerned if I saw an infant with no socks and no coat in this weather to be honest, I’d not say anything, but to be honest, I applaud anyone who does have the bollocks to say something when they see something concerning.

Tryingmybestadhd · 18/01/2024 22:05

Tell her to jog on . What a nosy idiot ! My 2 year old takes of her shows the minute I sit her anywhere and often goes back on the car without them and just a blanket . No Social worker wither or she would probably know better !

Nosleepforthismum · 18/01/2024 22:06

I really feel the cold so I definitely would have wrestled socks and shoes on my two year old DS when leaving the shop. My DH on the other hand wears shorts all year round and wouldn’t think it was an issue to leave him barefoot to go in the car.

Agree with other PP’s about tights!

DreamTheMoors · 18/01/2024 22:06

pickledandpuzzled · 18/01/2024 18:50

when I get in my car the seat is bitterly cold. My fingers have been losing feeling on the steering wheel despite wrist warmers and gloves

If she thought your DC was being put on a cold seat in a cold car with inadequate clothing, maybe she was right to mention it.

Perfect username.

Zooeyzo · 18/01/2024 22:07

@Vinrouge4 a random old lady once told me off for my daughter not having gloves 😂

ChaosAndCrumbs · 18/01/2024 22:08

They’re probably not a social worker. I had someone do the same to me before because my ds wasn’t wearing a hat - we were walking 30 seconds from one shop to another (both heated) and his hat was in the pram ready for the walk home. We ended up outside longer as they delayed us! It’s just interfering people who think somehow they’re helping 🙄

Globules · 18/01/2024 22:11

crostini · 18/01/2024 18:46

Would you go around with no socks on in this weather?

It's even colder for kids in prams because they're not getting the Warmth from walking either.

I've seen 4 parents on school drop off/pick up in flip flops all this week. The snow was falling and they were in flip flops.

So yes, some adults choose to not wear socks in this weather.

Ghentsummer · 18/01/2024 22:12

Cerealkiller4U · 18/01/2024 21:22

I mean. Yeah….I would double take if I saw a child being taken to the car in this weather with no coat and socks or blanket!

I mean it was -6 here this morning.

how far did you walk without them? I couldn’t of done that this morning

There's a big difference between -6 and 3 degrees so why was the temp where you were relevant? The child also had a blanket that they pushed off themselves.

Verbena17 · 18/01/2024 22:14

You’re right about not wearing a big puffy coat in the car - they can flatten when seatbelt pulls taught in a crash and baby/child can slip out.

Dont worry about her - she’s probably just saying it so she didn’t worry she hadn’t said it iyswim.

CakedUpHigh · 18/01/2024 22:26

If you're not walking, why is it worse to have no socks on than no gloves?

checkedroses · 18/01/2024 23:00

I lost count of the times I was stopped to be told 'the poor wee man doesn't have any socks on' when mine was a toddler- well he did when we left the house! Followed by refusing to wear long trousers for the entirety of primary school- I frequently followed him home from school carrying jumper, coat, hat and gloves as he skipped up the road in shorts and short sleeved shirt even in a Scottish winter. As a teen he sleeps with his bedroom window wide open all year round (even last night when it was -8 here). He has come to precisely no harm from all of this. I decided to pick my battles very early on!

Mielbee · 18/01/2024 23:01

Yes, inappropriate. I doubt it was a social worker.

This is why I go round loudly saying to my daughter things like, 'Shall we try putting your hat/gloves/raincover/blanket on again or will you just take it off?' Purely for the benefit of strangers who think they know better.

Alittlebitwary · 18/01/2024 23:18

Jesus, people need to butt out.
I haven't bothered putting coats on when I've done nursery drops and pick ups this week, other than popping the hoods over their heads like a cape because by the time they've got them on they'll be taking them off again.

Freshpinkroses · 18/01/2024 23:19

My 8 month old pulls his shoes and socks off no matter how many times I put them back on, they're off within seconds. Not sure if two year olds are like this too but I can definitely relate to this. As for jackets/coats you are right, they should not be worn in car seat.

TwistTheRibs · 18/01/2024 23:28

@Vinrouge4, my child WILL NOT but gloves on for love nor money. She even said, "my hands are cold" but refused to let me put them on.

She also pulled her shoes and socks off multiple times the other day but was in her pram, so I wrapped the blanket round her. She took them off again today, so I left them off for the 10 seconds it took to get into the house from the car.

Don't worry OP it's completely normal for them to do that and then your dc might think, "Ah, I got slightly cold today, so I'll leave my socks on next time...". Hahaaa! Chance would be a fine thing!
