We’ve just had someone come up to us as we’re getting our 2 year old into the car to be told that we need to think of our child as it is -5 degrees (it’s actually 3 degrees but not really the point) and they’re not wearing a coat or socks and she is a social worker and couldn’t not say something… we have literally just come out of a warm shopping centre and their shoes and coat are clearly under the pram and they had a blanket that they have put behind them. I thought you were supposed to put children in the car seat without coats on anyway??

Just ignore people like this op

Going from a warm shopping center to what will very quickly be a warm car is absolutely fine. Its not neglectful, red flag etc..

My 18m old strips off at any opportunity he can even in these freezing temperatures. House isn't massively warm but he wants to be just in a nappy and vest. Most of my day is spent trying to get clothes back on him.

Anyone commenting on socks and coats would just get back an eye roll at most from me.

Was this supposed social worker an older lady? I only ask as different child care advice would have applied to her perhaps. My daughter always had her coat or jacket on in the car seat.We simply weren't aware then that it was dangerous. Also if I had seen a bare footed child in winter weather, I would have been worried about that too. I know my little granddaughter pulls her socks off indoors all the ,time, but, she has shoes and socks on outside. When I worked in Early Years I used to ask " Can they have a hat and spare gloves to nursery please. They will be outdoors at certain points today" It was never a problem although parents did tell me often ,they had those items in the child's bag but the child refused to keep them on! Sometimes it's the child's choice too. Being a parent isn't easy ,but I don't really think the 'maybe social worker' did or said anything untoward really. Better than folks who don't notice or just don't care about children at all.

I understand no socks as my children used to take them off all the time

Lennon80 · 20/01/2024 09:55

Social worker is a protected title it’s against the law to claim to be one. This person clearly wasn’t one so I’d have reminded them purporting to be one is a criminal offence.

I would put money on her not being a social worker as it would be extremely unprofessional to come up to you that way. If she is a social worker she wants reporting for misguided opinions as social workers frequently transport kids in their cars and should know that coats must not be worn in car seats

My child was out in no socks/shoes yesterday on the walk from shopping centre to the car because she had taken her shoes and socks off while in the pram! In fact, we went to the car without DH because she chucked a shoe somewhere but her socks and 1 shoe were in the pram!

If someone came up to me, they'd be told to butt out! A 1 second snapshot of our day does not give an indication that my child is neglected!

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 20/01/2024 12:57

If she's a social worker, I'm a monkey's uncle.

Of course, it was inappropriate. Toddlers remove socks and shoes all the time. Trying to get them back on instead of just getting into a car and cranking the heat would have taken longer.

Ignore people like this; they want to validate themselves and end up doing the opposite.

T1Dmama · 21/01/2024 09:08

Take no notice.
im betting she wasn’t a social worker and just some interfering busy body!
I’d have responded by thanking her for the information and then turning away and continuing to strap my child in the car while ignoring her!….
People like that usually just walk off muttering!

I would love to hear the other side of this story though.
