To be disappointed partner booked "holiday" ?

closemydoormow · 14/01/2024 12:50

So me and partner have 2 holidays booked this year.
Greece in September and a ski holiday in December.
I'm more than happy with this
He has now told me he has booked us 3 nights in Gran Canaria in 4 weeks
I questioned the 3 nights thing and he said they were really cheap flights (under £20 ) so he thought why not
Aibu to be a bit annoyed
It's a long way to go for 3 nights
We land on the Sunday at 10.30 am
We fly back on the Wednesday at 11.30 am

Would you be annoyed going all that way for 3 nights ?

Going to sound a miserable bugger (& probably hypocritical as I do fly) but it’s not good environmentally to fly so would say it’s better not to unless it’s a purposeful /meaningful trip which it sounds like this isn’t (not to see anyone or for your main holiday.) I haven’t read the full thread but it’s interesting that environmental concerns aren’t cited in the first responses.

GinAndJuice99 · 14/01/2024 15:56

I’d be bothered about the environmental impact of flying that distance for such a short trip

Advent0range · 14/01/2024 15:57

I'd be delighted!

Could he find a friend to go with if you don't fancy it?

Yes, me!

Ramalangadingdong · 14/01/2024 16:00

The flight is part of the holiday as far as I am concerned.

Aroundthewaygirl · 14/01/2024 16:06

Actually I prefer shorter holidays and wouldn’t mind a few hour plane ride to get there. Right when I’m starting to long to be home it would be time to leave. It’s perfect.

It's not that far! I'm with him - sounds like a bargain. You get there at a decent time on Wednesday so you'll have three whole days there.

Seriously. What's not to like?

I think YABVVU reasonable to be annoyed with him.

Edited

How does landing at midnight practically midnight Sunday by the time you land annd get to the hotel and having to leave like 7am Wednesday morning give you three full days? You only get Monday and Tuesday there and then off at the crack of dawn Wednesday?

honeylulu · 14/01/2024 16:09

I've just booked for us (me husband and daughter) to go to Santorini for 3 nights for my big birthday. We are all excited and am sure we can make 3 day stay worthwhile. I did check with H that he could get AL and was happy with Santorini but I'm paying so it was my decision.

I would have loved it if he had surprised me but it wouldn't have occurred to him sadly. He's great in other ways but not with holiday planning or surprises. I also earn quite a bit more (we have joint household finances but separate disposable income - I know that is a mumsnet horror!) hence me paying. Husband was delighted and said thank you.

Buck up OP - think positively and you'll enjoy it. You've made clear it's not the gesture or the place that bothers you so crack on!

I am annoyed that you are spewing all that unnecessary carbon into the atmosphere when we are in the midst of a climate emergency.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 14/01/2024 16:17

@ginasevern good point. Or me!

campingmama · 14/01/2024 16:19

@FlyingWithoutAPlane
The flight is 6am, will be in resort before noon
I view the holiday starts as soon as I get through security so I count lounge time as holiday anyway 😀

closemydoormow · 14/01/2024 16:19

@FlyingWithoutAPlane we are landing at 11 in the morning not the night time and I'm assuming we need to leave for airport at around 8 am

I’d be delighted. The travel times look quite good, 3 full days when it’ll likely be sunny and warm. What’s not to like?

girlfriend44 · 14/01/2024 15:03

Canaries are not a short flight?
France, Spain would be, but not Canaries.

4 hours to canary islands,is not so far away for a 3 day break.

LaurieStrode · 14/01/2024 16:24

FFS. I've flown four hours for ONE night.

Talk about leading a "glass half empty" sort of life. A partner who books a surprise holiday, within budget, to break up the bleak winter, and that's a big problem? Many people don't have a partner, the money for a holiday or other holidays booked this year.

From the OP. They land on Sunday morning. 10.30 arrival, with hand luggage (as they won't need more for a short break, I assume?) means they'll be at their hotel easily in time for a nice lunch somewhere. Then they have two full days, Monday and Tuesday before they fly back on Wednesday morning.

idkbroidk · 14/01/2024 16:31

you're so lucky :') i've literally never been on a holiday in my entire life. i hope u have fun!

SpringboksSocks · 14/01/2024 16:31

I’d be over the moon if my partner did this.

NewYear24 · 14/01/2024 16:33

I’ve had some lovely three and four night breaks with longer flights than that. Try and enjoy it and make the most of it.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 14/01/2024 16:38

I think it's just right for a short break and four hours isn't too long a flight. As much as I like Leeds I'd prefer a bit of warmth and vitamin D mid-winter too.

I wouldn't do the airport hotel either side though.

SoIdentifying · 14/01/2024 16:39

3 days in the sun - what's not to like? The weather is shite!

Nonomono · 14/01/2024 16:40

Can he not take a friend instead?

Then he gets to still go but you don’t feel pressured into it.

Differentstarts · 14/01/2024 16:46

Yanbu I'd hate that. sometimes it's nice to spend some of your days of work at home relaxing not having to deal with airports and travelling

I don't agree actually. You don't have to either be:

A) take I will never fly at all

Or

B) I will fly as many times as I possibly can

People can choose to fly LESS - so that might mean just one main trip a year, or two, or one every 5 years. - wherever you put your own boundary.

I previously thought there was a growing understanding of how harmful flying is, and that the days of all of us (myself included, to my shame!) flying whenever we fqncied and could afford it for a couple of days away, were kind of coming to an end?

But from reading this thread, it seems not....

For those of you saying of course you would go, no question - do you try to limit the amount you fly at all out of concern for the environment? Or would you fly as often as you got the chance really, and the only constraints you see are time and budget?
