To think there are a lot of nasty people on Mumsnet?

Have seen so many directly aggressive and passively aggressive comments on here that it makes me think that many mumsnetters are just plain nasty. Assuming to due to unhappiness with own life.

Some examples stick out - when people ask to guess their age some of the guesses are just rude and over the top inaccurate. One poster even questioned a person’s gender even stating they had thick eyebrows which were not groomed due to depression. The disingenuous of “please don’t think I’m being rude but …”.

Also saw someone ask for help with their curtains and the amount of snide remarks was shocking.

I also think a lot of people in here think their way is best and the only way. Insufferable.

To me the people who will kick a person when they are down just seems disproportionately high. Obviously the fact it’s an anonymous forum adds to this.

Yes there are some posters on here who are aggressive when they have no need to be. There's also a lot of funny, knowledgeable, kind and generous posters on here.

It’s not great.

I wish the mods were on it. I know you can report stuff but it’s often hard because a lot of it purposefully stays within talk guidelines but is really horrible nonetheless.

Unfortunately it’s not just mumsnet; it’s in everyday life too

I don't know how many individual posters there are on Mumsnet on any given day but I'm guessing it's a lot. So it's inevitable there'll be a load of tossers in the mix.

The ‘guess my age’ threads make me wince because angry people are drawn to them like moths to a flame, just so they can tell a woman who clearly looks anywhere from 30 - 40 that she looks the same age as their 68 year old mother, only more haggard.

It’s the kicking of someone who is down over really inconsequential stuff that annoys me

yanbu, but I’ve also received a lot of support, and night watch is a life saver

There's a thread a week saying this on average. I don't think it's that bad but I don't read every topic of course.

Mumsnet isn't moderated.

You do need a thick skin to post threads like that OP. It's not going to change on here.

Yeah it's the internet. You get a mix

It’s to be expected though, happens on all internet forums to a degree

Think of the type of people who use online forums, most will be unable to make meaningful friendships irl so rely on online forums for socialisation or support. If they struggle irl they’re usually not going to be that great a person.

I’ve lost count of the number of posters who complain about having no friends, struggling to make friends or not being able to understand how people have friends in general.

"Guess my age....oh no im not 21 I'm actually 96" posts are fucking tedious though tbf.

Although saying that those people who post asking for others to guess their age are twats in general so deserve some snark

Honestly, there is some nasty responses as there is all over the internet.

If someone posts a "Guess my age," thread, what are they looking to achieve from it? It's fairly predictable that some nasty posters will find the thread and make their predictably nasty comments. I would strongly advise against posting such threads or any pictures of yourself on here.

I think it's just the nature of the beast. If you're seeking genuine advice-avoid AIBU like the plague because many posters come on here for a bunfight and will say things just to get a reaction.

Yep. One poster this morning asked if a lady had a brain injury because she was holding a Harry Potter themed party for herself. Disgusting.

This is about the only place where women aren't expected to 'be kind' and simper over each other so I'd rather that did not change if that's ok with you OP.

This. I’ve seen really supportive ‘guess my age’ threads. The tone of it will really change the kind of replies you get. No one really likes a show off and some of them are clearly posting for people to tell them how amazing they are, and that kind of gets people’s backs up. I’ve seen one where she’s asking people to comment on her figure as she’s put on weight, and then posted 3 pics of her in a bikini, she looked like and instagram model and was clearly just fishing for attention. Those threads will never go well 🤷🏼‍♀️

@blackpanth yep, the rules for posting on here are very telling to the people who run its mindset imo

mumsnet is set up as a haven for women 40-70 and everything else outside of that falls to the wayside

Some people just enjoy dragging others down to feel better about themselves especially appearances.

The "how old do I look?" threads are ridiculous and I have no idea what the OPs are hoping for, but they need to take some responsibility for being so daft as to do this. I don't comment on them (as far as I remember) but it is the Internet equivalent of putting yourself in the stocks.
