To think there are a lot of nasty people on Mumsnet?

Just that.

Have seen so many directly aggressive and passively aggressive comments on here that it makes me think that many mumsnetters are just plain nasty. Assuming to due to unhappiness with own life.

Some examples stick out - when people ask to guess their age some of the guesses are just rude and over the top inaccurate. One poster even questioned a person’s gender even stating they had thick eyebrows which were not groomed due to depression. The disingenuous of “please don’t think I’m being rude but …”.

Also saw someone ask for help with their curtains and the amount of snide remarks was shocking.

I also think a lot of people in here think their way is best and the only way. Insufferable.

To me the people who will kick a person when they are down just seems disproportionately high. Obviously the fact it’s an anonymous forum adds to this.

Too often its hard to find threads that don't descend into nastiness. I can't stand the ones where OP is called unhinged, hysterical etc. Really derogatory. If a man landed here and called women that there'd be howls of Sexist!!

Use the report button.

What do you mean, "if"?

Night watch?

Over night, when the MNHQ mods aren't working, there's a team of volunteers who can hide posts/threads if they're reported.

Here, in the 'Mumsnet Stuff' topic

When the moderating team is back, they'll review the threads or posts that the Night Watch team have reported, and will either reinstate or delete. Usually they delete, as TNW are pretty good at spotting the trolls.

The Night Watch | Mumsnet | Mumsnet

Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers.

The trouble also is that many of the tw*ts and troublemakers lack self awareness and don't realise they're the problem. I read this thread back and noticed that one of the people I've reported in the past for awful behaviour to others is actually on this thread. Sad

Maybe if people used AIBU for genuine topics they wouldn’t get cheeky replies. Guess my age? What do you think of my curtains? Go away.

@Dutch1e I resurrected an old zombie thread because the HA i rent from was insisting their computer was right and that tenants owed rent when they didnt. Its similar to something big thats all over the press. Felt vindicated so i do think its ok to ressurect threads in some circumstances

Sure, makes sense. My point was more about the recent cluster of resurrections and how different the attitude of commenters is then/now.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 10/01/2024 11:02

I noticed a long run of threads where the nasty lot were first on. You could almost rely on skipping the first page to get to considered responses. I haven't checked recently though.

Beeinalily · 10/01/2024 11:11

I get fed up with the way people get obsessed by details. Recently a poster thought that a member of her family had stolen something, I for one wouldn't have known what to do in her place and would have been very upset. But what did people latch onto? She put the item in her fruit bowl. Now in our home practically everything gets put in the fruit bowl until it's put away properly! A lot of posters also seemed to decide that the adult hard drinking relative was Tiny Tim. I felt very sorry for the OP, and I doubt if she'll venture back to update us.

GotBeatenUp · 10/01/2024 12:23

@Beeinalily , but it was designer earrings or something wasn't it?
Fruit bowl are sort of for helping yourself to.

@Ilovelurchers your classism is showing.

Yeah, it really isn't though.....

LazyGewl · 01/06/2024 23:55

Perhaps they genuinely feel the op looks older. That happened to me. I thought I was complimenting someone and it turns out she was much younger than I’d guessed.

Totally agree! This post is old but I can say I have seen and read many nasty comments from people and couldn't agree more!
