To ask opinions on my new kitchen..

We've just spend a lot getting our kitchen done.
I was advised gloss would be easier to keep clean, and we had matte (well painted wood) cabinets before so decided gloss no handles.
It's showing every bloody finger print! Yes it cleans very easy but every day there is are fingerprints.

Does it look ok? Honest opinions please 😞

We didn't choose gloss specifically because of the fingerprint issue, and we have NO handles except on the dishwasher and fridge doors (and they are tiny and very discreet). We also get fingerprints on the doors despite the fact they are matt. I don't think they show as much as it they were gloss - but they are still there 😞.
Taking the top cupboards right up to the ceiling is great - we did that too.

My advice:

  • replace tap with inox
  • black panel above hob looks like an add-on
  • Tile between upper and lower units in white/mocca.

She wanted to know if the finger marks showed, it’s only just been fitted.

Yes I thought the same, ie; a bid for reassurance about the finger marks and advice on that, not an all-out assault on how well they have spent their money.

You also appear to have a Deatheater in your kitchen.

She probably can't see it.
Stupid muggles.

How are we meant to tell if there are finger prints based on the before and after photos?

fresh65 · 09/01/2024 12:45

We had a kitchen like @Ihateslugs . Never had any issues with fingerprints unless a door was touched with very greasy hands (e.g during cooking).

Maybe you're noticing every tiny mark because it's brand new and you're looking out for things. Sure you'll get into the habit of using the handles.

Anjea · 09/01/2024 12:48

Looks great OP. Clean and fresh and lovely.

Is that a reason to criticise it and suggest expensive changes?

I didn’t criticise other than to say it’s not my taste - I suspect OP wouldn’t like my kitchen. I even said in my earlier PP that the pictures didn’t add anything to her point about finger prints.

My point is, the question asked with the accompanying pictures invites opinions of the whole kitchen.
I agree, there is no need to be rude, though.

Lorrymum · 09/01/2024 13:05

I think it's a beautiful kitchen.
I wear glasses when I am out and about and take them off the second I step through the front door. If I put them on when I am in the kitchen I am always shocked at the amount of finger marks on the cupboards I had previously thought were spotless. A quick wipe down with a fibre cloth sorts it out, while making a mental note to wear glasses when cleaning.

Hankunamatata · 09/01/2024 13:10

Aunt rubber hers with fabric conditioner sheet as she swore stopped handprints

VanGoghsDog · 09/01/2024 13:33

I've just looked at my cheap, gloss, kitchen cupboards to check for fingerprints. I am slovenly, I only wipe off the worst food splashes.

I can confirm that after a while, the fingerprints just merge and the doors just look slightly less glossy. And who cares?
I've wiped them now, so like a previous poster, I'll have to take my glasses off in the kitchen now.

Judecb · 10/01/2024 17:51

We have similar gloss. You'll appreciate it more in the Spring/Summer as the light bounces around.

CallMeBobcat · 10/01/2024 17:53

It’s not my taste, but I can see that it looks neat and crisp and lovely

enjoy!

ElsieMc · 10/01/2024 17:59

It looks great, but the only thing I would mention is a friend had a gloss kitchen and she found that the kettle boiling took some of the shine off a nearby unit. Might not always be the case, but just beware.

snowmobileon · 10/01/2024 18:03

Gloss is my only regret in my kitchen.

Princesspollyyy · 10/01/2024 18:08

If you think your new kitchen doesn't have handles, then what do you think the long metal things are at the bottom of each cupboard?? Decoration??

LakieLady · 10/01/2024 18:18

BIossomtoes · 09/01/2024 09:26

I think strong coloured units will start to look dated just as quickly.

I really don’t care. I’ve wanted a navy kitchen for as long as I can remember and can’t imagine a time when the one fitted last year will fail to give me pleasure. I smile every time I walk into it.

I have a bit of a thing for navy kitchens. There's a rather high end kitchen shop where I live, and for quite a while they had a lovely navy kitchen with bright white worktops and brass handles and taps. It looked great, and the brass handles etc gave it a slightly nautical feel.

I really liked it.

BayCityCoaster · 10/01/2024 18:24

Maybe I’m overly precious, but if I was going to post a picture of my new kitchen and invite MNers (of all people!) to judge it with honest 😱 opinions, I’d at least try to take a semi-decent picture, and tidy up the bench a bit, but perhaps that's just me…

This whole thread has been enjoyably diverting with the handle v no handle debacle, and the usual, reliably amusing responses…. Grin

CWigtownshire · 10/01/2024 18:27

I feel your pain! Have just had a matte navy handleless kitchen installed and it always seems to be covered in fingerprints 😅I've given up wiping them down every day, and am past caring if anyone else notices - they can clean them if it bothers them lol.

MumTeacherofMany · 10/01/2024 18:42

You do still have handles? I preferred the before photo, but that's just me OP! I guess if it's really annoying you you could have proper handles installed?

Sandflea9900 · 10/01/2024 18:46

I’ve got gloss cabinets and they do show every finger mark if you look at the right angle with the right light. However, they are easy to clean - windowlene works a treat.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 10/01/2024 18:51

Looks lovely OP! I have black matt handleless right now (new house)…. No better! I had gloss with handles last time (did up old house to sell) and they still got fingerprints. Kitchens and fingerprints are intrinsically linked, don’t let it dampen your love of your kitchen!

Kitchen company won't replace the door if you put a kettle under a unit.
