We've just spend a lot getting our kitchen done.
I was advised gloss would be easier to keep clean, and we had matte (well painted wood) cabinets before so decided gloss no handles.
It's showing every bloody finger print! Yes it cleans very easy but every day there is are fingerprints.

Does it look ok? Honest opinions please 😞

I have never visited a kitchen showroom. I use a lamp with a low-watt bulb for subtle lighting. Thanks for the information.

Obviously a very sensitive topic.

I don’t think it’s kitchen lighting that is a sensitive topic but rather people bending over backward to be snide and unpleasant about OP’s kitchen. I mean, why?!

OlderandwiserMaybe · 09/01/2024 10:37

New kitchen looks lovely. And yes agree - there are handles!
I think after a few weeks you wont notice the finger prints so much and if it's any consolation i got a matt finish kitchen last summer and I noticed finger prints all over those too when it was new! I just give it all a good wipe over every so often. flat doors like yours so easy to clean.

I do think the floor lighting looks nice though.

I'm sorry, but the title of the thread is "AIBU to ask opinions on my new kitchen."

I expressed an opinion about the floor lighting. I was called a "sub rock dweller", sneered at, and told to "Ask the Airpeople", which presumably was "sarcasm".

On a plane, you need to be able to see in the unfamiliar cabin in the dark to get to the toilet and back to your seat. You can't just lean over in the fuselage and switch on a light - which you can do in your own kitchen. You can have more than one light switch, astonishingly.

Obviously, this is the trend - which I don't keep up with. Clearly everyone who has embraced the trend is mortally offended by anyone questioning the trend.

barkymcbark · 09/01/2024 10:42

Lovely looking kitchen but too shiny for me.

My friend got a gloss, no handle kitchen, and she said the same about the marks and finger prints (she also has a dog so water splatter too)

I've seen threads on here saying they don't show, but they do and although easy to clean, they are still really noticeable

JaneJeffer · 09/01/2024 10:43

and told to "Ask the Airpeople", which presumably was "sarcasm".
It was a genuine response

SiobhanSharpe · 09/01/2024 10:44

We have just had gloss units fitted in a similar colour. Yes, you can see fingerprints after a while, but meh. A quick wipe with a dry cloth every so often sorts the problem. (Not every day, life's too short and I don't care that much unless I have visitors coming.)
No toddlers in the house, though!

Oh? I don't know who "the Airpeople" are. Do they make kitchens?

CocoPlum · 09/01/2024 10:48

I got matt and they mark easily too!

TurquoiseSeasAndSilverSand · 09/01/2024 10:49

I think the issue may be that there is gloss and there is Gloss. Mine is white gloss and 14yrs old, it doesn't have the, see every reflection, type shine and not because it's old, I have spare doors, the gloss hasn't aged. But some of the showroom kitchens are really shiny, I can imagine them finger printing.
I've never regretted my choice, I hate cleaning and it is easy to clean. My only regrets are having too much worksurface, the magic corner cupboard (which I hate) and no floor to ceiling cupboards. The only issue with the gloss finish is one drawer is starting to peel near the oven, but I assume that would happen with any plastic finish.

KimberleyClark · 09/01/2024 10:38

So do I. And I think the benefits of the effect are self-evident.

NoNotMyHair · 09/01/2024 10:54

Use Elbow Grease and kitchen towel - works a treat!

peachescariad · 09/01/2024 10:54

I'm just planning new kitchen, however I've been put off gloss and going for a matte finish. I'm not a lover of the black granite tops and black sink, splashback etc. Agree it does look a bit clinical.
I do like the chrome sockets with charger port and the under cupboard lighting. Also like the look of the cupboards going all way to the ceiling.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/01/2024 10:55

You 100 percent have handles on the new kitchen???? Use them and then the doors won’t get finger prints.

It looks miles better than your old kitchen. I would have got white granite or quartz worktops to make the area lighter but that’s just personal preference. Never been keen on black.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 09/01/2024 10:55

It looks lovely, I’m a bit envious. Though we have the same oven mitts Grin

IAmAtoms · 09/01/2024 11:11

I prefer the old one but I am not a fan of modern units, I like old fashioned pine, that has always been my dream for a new kitchen😁

Olika · 09/01/2024 11:12

It's definitely better than the old one. Personally I prefer lighter colour worktops as black&white makes it clinical.

SighedAndSmiled · 09/01/2024 11:16

PerfectYear321 · 09/01/2024 00:03

Me too, unless I'm hallucinating 😂

Aren’t those silver scrolls handles ?

WinterDeWinter · 09/01/2024 11:17

You can definitely train yourself (and DH and kids) to shut the cupboards using the handles only.

SighedAndSmiled · 09/01/2024 11:18

Looks lovely . Happy New Kitchen !

NoTouch · 09/01/2024 11:20

I love the cleanness of lines (including the handles!), the colours, the ceiling height cupboards, induction hob, integrated appliances, but there are some things I would have prioritised differently for my personal preferences.

I love an eye level oven but would have retained worktop space instead and I would have had a much smaller stainless steel sink (especially if you have dishwasher) as it also takes up so much worktop space - this would be so I have a decent bit of worktop with no appliances/clutter to work/clean up after around. The reasoning being I am working at a worktop more often than I am looking/taking stuff in/out of the oven.

Also a splash back for the white wall behind the sink.

I also have a black worktop and hate it as it shows every crumb around the toaster! (I maybe need to clean more often!) - next kitchen will not have a black worktop!

RestingCatsArseFace · 09/01/2024 11:43

When gloss doors were fashionable in the 80s I had a shiny new kitchen. Fingerprints everywhere, on the doors where they were touched randomly or by being closed, so all along the edges, around the handles, and the lower ones where drips land from above looked worse than matt ones. Cake making was a nightmare with splashes as well as fingerprints.

The shine seems to reflect them and make them look worse. After several years of it I was pleased to move and get a plain matt kitchen.

ednclouda · 09/01/2024 11:47

I -too have gloss worktops nitemare I feel your pain

SwingTheMonkey · 09/01/2024 11:56

Gosh, threads like this really bring out the inner bitch in some people.

It looks modern and clean op.

I inherited a gloss kitchen in my current house and believe me - white gloss is much easier to keep fingerprint free than dark grey gloss! I give them a wipe over once a day with a microfibre cloth and they look ok for a few minutes every day!
