I live abroad and make an English breakfast about twice a year 😂
I have fond memories of being a child and coming downstairs to the smell of bacon and cracking of eggs.
I fancy doing one this Sunday, what are the ideal things to have?
We had the full things as kids (no beans though! 🤮) but we had fried bread etc, I’ll likely just do toast, but it will be white and it will be Warburtons. Love mushrooms too, tomatoes I’m not sure as I’d do normal, proper tomatoes fried, but we had plum tomatoes as a kid? Which is best?

No sausage?!

I would prefer ordinary tomatoes, fried, but would actually choose baked beans.

Scarydinosaurs · 05/01/2024 20:48

Black pudding!

Cas112 · 05/01/2024 20:49

Make sure you included a hash brown and piece of black pudding 🤤

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/01/2024 20:51

A hash brown has no place on an English breakfast. A potato cake or two would be good. I'd rather have fried mushrooms than beans or tomato.

QueenOfMOHO · 05/01/2024 20:51

Bacon
Fried egg
Sausage
Mushrooms
Baked beans
Tinned tomatoes
White toast
HP sauce
Optional hash brown/potato cake/ black pudding (the vegan ones are great).

TomatoSandwiches · 05/01/2024 20:55

Can't have a cooked breakfast without a fried slice, fries eggs, crispy back bacon, sausage, black pudding, fried tomatoes, mushrooms and brown sauce.

Optional extras, tattie scones, white pudding, beans and homemade hashbrowns.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 20:58

I hate sausages! But yes will def have to get for Dh and Dd.

Absolutely no way baked beans, like them on toast, jacket potato etc…not an English breakfast

Dad had black pudding, but not going there 😅

Hash browns wasn’t a tradition at ours and not mad keen

Think I’ll go with real tomatoes then

I prefer fresh tomatoes to tinned myself and I don’t consider hash browns a traditional part of a full English. I’m not wild about fried bread either - I’d prefer toast.
However definitely really good sausages and bacon and, if I’m making it myself, scrambled eggs as I find fried quite tricky!

Zanatdy · 05/01/2024 21:02

for me, ideal is sausage, bacon, mushrooms, fried egg, fried bread and tomatoes (I personally like beans too)

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2024 21:03

If there's no beans then I ain't coming.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/01/2024 21:04

I like both tinned and fresh tomatoes but if tinned I need lots of black pepper and a dash of Henderson's relish, fresh Tom's need lots of salt.

I'll be having a pot of tea and a full fat coke with it all ta 😋 👌

TrickorTreacle · 05/01/2024 21:10

Bacon, sausages, fried eggs, (optional: scrambled eggs), tomato, mushrooms, baked beans, fried bread.

I'm not keen on black pudding or haggis. Chips and hash browns makes it too stodgey.

What I want to know though is - why are fewer places serving fried bread now? Most of the independent cafes have stopped doing it and the Tesco cafe has also stopped doing it in the past year. I know fried bread is really bad for you, but it is a treat that we're allowed to have occasionally. Is it some politically correct agenda? Or are they trying to avoid lawsuits in case diners get a heart attack while eating fried bread?

Dunnoburt · 05/01/2024 21:17

Birds eye potato waffle .......(they are waffley versatile 🤣)

RocketIceLollie · 05/01/2024 21:20

No tomato or mushrooms for me. Just bacon, sausages, hash browns, brown toast, and baked beans.

Lindy2 · 05/01/2024 21:22

Bacon
Sausage
Black pudding
Fried egg
Mushrooms
Baked beans
Toast
Tea

Delicious.

No tomatoes. I like them in salads and sandwiches but for some reason I just don't want them on a breakfast.

therealcookiemonster · 05/01/2024 21:23

my fav way of doing English breakfast:

  • sausages
  • poached egg
  • homemade baked beans
  • pan roasted tomatoes and sautéed chestnut mushrooms with garlic and thyme
  • homemade potato, carrot and onion hash (although I concede this is not strictly english)

no bread but if I did it would be brown toast with butter.

OpalOrchid · 05/01/2024 21:24

No tomatoes. Has to have beans and I do love fried bread.

tdino · 05/01/2024 21:26

Clearly your English breakfast is missing

Beans

Haggis

Lorna sausage

Tattie scones.

I think Hash Browns are American and shouldn't be in an English Breakfast.

This is a Full Scottish and not a Full English, and they should never NEVER be mixed up.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 21:28

@tdino I don’t know what tattles scones are 🙈and the rest, sorry but no way

Its interesting to see the different versions of the breakfast from possible different areas perhaps…I’m from oop North -NW

@Wishitwouldsnowsomuch oh you need to Google potato scones. The only way to mop up the fry up.
