I live abroad and make an English breakfast about twice a year 😂
I have fond memories of being a child and coming downstairs to the smell of bacon and cracking of eggs.
I fancy doing one this Sunday, what are the ideal things to have?
We had the full things as kids (no beans though! 🤮) but we had fried bread etc, I’ll likely just do toast, but it will be white and it will be Warburtons. Love mushrooms too, tomatoes I’m not sure as I’d do normal, proper tomatoes fried, but we had plum tomatoes as a kid? Which is best?

Bacon
Sausage/s
Egg (fried with a solid yolk)
Fried Bread
Hash Brown/s
Heinz Baked Beans
Button Mushrooms

And a mug of strong Breakfast Tea!

Never ever solid yoke.

Janieforever · 05/01/2024 22:12

I honestly struggle with the fact anyone puts tinned tomatoes on a full English, bleugh. Why would you when you can have fresh.

for me

black pudding,
mushrooms
eggs
bacon
fresh tomatoes grilled
toast

and beans as well for my family.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 22:14

Oh yes the mushrooms…do they have to be button or just sliced?

That's not an English flag.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 05/01/2024 22:16

Round here is bubble and squeak. I don't like huge amounts of it, I make a b&s potato cake and fry that.

That's not an English flag.

I know and it's really bugging me!

trippily · 05/01/2024 22:16

W**rong flag for an English breakfast op.
No prizes for guessing where you are from!

However you prefer them really. Not tinned ones though. Fresh white mushrooms - button or sliced or even whole ones brushed with oil and done in the oven

Superduper02 · 05/01/2024 22:18

Funny how hearing what other people want in their English breakfast really makes me question their sanity 😂

For me, in an ideal world, it would consist of:

  • A sausage
  • Streaky bacon
  • Fried eggs (over easy)
  • Hash brown
  • Sautéed or grilled tomatoes and mushrooms
  • Baked beans
  • One half slice of fried bread or a good slice of white bread/sourdough with butter

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 anyone had a Welsh breakfast? What does that involve?

Gowlett · 05/01/2024 21:40

What’s a Lorna sausage?

Lorne not Lorna and it's a square of sausage meat usually about 3 x 3 inches.

OneTC · 05/01/2024 22:24

Never hash browns because they are rotten little things

JanglingJack · 05/01/2024 22:25

QueenOfMOHO · 05/01/2024 20:51

Bacon
Fried egg
Sausage
Mushrooms
Baked beans
Tinned tomatoes
White toast
HP sauce
Optional hash brown/potato cake/ black pudding (the vegan ones are great).

This - without the beans.

Beans OR tomato 🤣

Tinned Plum tomatoes.

Buttered white sliced bread too for mopping up.

FluffActually · 05/01/2024 22:26

Just C&P this from my instructions to American relatives 😀

Our full English:
bacon (proper back bacon, never streaky)
sausage (Cumberland or Lincolnshire)
fried egg (runny yolk)
chestnut mushrooms fried with garlic, parsley and pepper
baked beans
thick sliced white toast with butter
brown sauce
strong tea

optional:
grilled tomato half for pushing around plate
fried potatoes / hash if any cooked leftovers in fridge

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/01/2024 22:26

Bacon, Egg, mushroom, tomato, and Derbyshire or Staffordshire oatcake.

Sausage, and black pudding are optional.

Beans are awful.

Hash brown is ok if you can't get oatcakes. Toast is a poor substitute for an oatcake or fried bread

TigerDroveAgain · 05/01/2024 22:29

White pudding!!! that is it, never see it anywhere, love it

Pebbles16 · 05/01/2024 22:31

In our 'usual' Sunday breakfast - it's a treat that we love

  • A sausage (two for DH)
  • Smoked back bacon
  • Egg/s (poached for me, scrambled for DH)
  • Toast

PLUS Freshly squeezed OJ for DH and V8/spice tomato juice for me

In my ideal Sunday breakfast

  • A sausage
  • Smoked back bacon
  • Slice of very good black pudding
  • Poached egg (runny in the middle) or fried (sunny side up I think they call it)
  • Grilled mushrooms
  • Baked beans (in a boat) with HP JUST for the beans
  • Slice of fried bread
  • Proper toast with butter

Juice as above, but, if we are talking ideal, I could stretch to a Bloody Mary!

Morrisons have it

HollywoodTease · 05/01/2024 22:35

Bacon
Butcher's sausage
Fried egg
Tinned plum tomatoes or a grilled fresh one
Sautéed mushrooms (in butter)
Beans
White toast with proper butter

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/01/2024 22:38

<flexes>

As a former B&B owner (SE England so no Scottish accompaniments, (more's the pity), my "full English" consisted as a minimum:

Choice of eggs
2 x bacon
2 x sausage
Mushrooms (cooked in butter)
Choice of beans or grilled/fried tomato
Choice of toast

I would offer fried bread if I was in the mood and very occasionally black pudding if I had it in.

According to the "Pink Book" 4 star accommodation should offer a minimum of four cooked elements. We didn't just throw the show together 😄
