I live abroad and make an English breakfast about twice a year 😂
I have fond memories of being a child and coming downstairs to the smell of bacon and cracking of eggs.
I fancy doing one this Sunday, what are the ideal things to have?
We had the full things as kids (no beans though! 🤮) but we had fried bread etc, I’ll likely just do toast, but it will be white and it will be Warburtons. Love mushrooms too, tomatoes I’m not sure as I’d do normal, proper tomatoes fried, but we had plum tomatoes as a kid? Which is best?

Welsh breakfast as cooked by my mother every Saturday morning
Sausage
Bacon
cockles (fried in the bacon fat)
Laverbread (fried in the residual bacon and cockle fat.)
Fried eggs
Tomatoes
Fried bread
Mushrooms/beans/blackpudding optional.

Well you do you, but this fishy shit has no place on an English breakfast thread.

I'm near the border we definitely have tattie scones in England on a full English.

My sister can't get them further south and stocks up on square sausage and tattie scones when visiting home.

OneTC · 06/01/2024 12:54

You can get square sausage and tattie scones in Morrisons in Surrey

Rude! But op did ask for other breakfasts

Gowlett · 06/01/2024 15:04

Lorne sausage, I know it now! Never knew it was called that. We got it on holiday in Scotland, in a bun when we ordered burgers from the kids menu. Wasn’t impressed then! But looks nice now.

'Square sausage' or 'square slice' also exists, although proper Lorne is normally a tad nicer. They are a very similar thing though.

OP originally posted a Union Jack flag, hence Scottish, Welsh, Ulster etc being mentioned. She asked MN to change it to an English flag.

I think I'm the only person in the world who's not that keen on a full fry up. Love a morning roll with egg and tattie scone though!

I struggle to eat a full fry up these days, but a roll with Lorne Sausage, fried tattie scone and just set fried egg is nice!

This always makes me laugh - Isa and her 'wee' roll because she's being healthier!

Sausage
Egg
Bacon
Hash browns
Beans
Bread & butter
Tea

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/01/2024 15:17

Fresh tomatoes - I find the easiest way to do them is have and then pop in the microwave.

Westfacing · 06/01/2024 15:32

Is Scotland the only country in the world that has square sausages?

I like the sound of them - the right shape for a sandwich thin.

Therealjudgejudy · 06/01/2024 15:38

My favourite cooked breakfast is:

Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, beans, plum tomatoes, loads of toast with proper butter, hp sauce, pot of tea and a glass of orange juice.

Great thread

It's possible other places may shape meat into a square/rectangular shape, but Scotland is certainly well known for it!

Tinned toms
Mushrooms
Sausage
Bacon
Beans
Black pudding

Loads of toast and butter
Yorkshire tea.

Yes has to be Yorkshire tea

Oldraver · 06/01/2024 17:43

We have it about once a month for dinner

Bacon
Sausage
Black Pudding
Tinned tomatoes (not keen but OH likes)
Hadh Brown/potato waffle but not always
Fried egg though sometimes scrambled
Mushrooms
Toast, OH and DS have slice of bread and butter

I usually have two slices of toast, one for the fried egg and one for tomatoes, I have a dislike of the being mixed or egg yolk on the plate

OH had the last fried egg and cooks it himself which gives me time to get on with eating mine.

So I can disappear before he starts mixing the tomatoes egg and black pudding into a mush 🤮

TomatoSandwiches · 06/01/2024 18:12

Fried slice is made with bacon fat or some dripping topped up with butter or oil, medium heat is best, if the fat bubbles once the bread touches it then it's good, literally takes a minute each side, drain on paper and a good pinch of salt.

EatenbytheYuleCat · 06/01/2024 18:22

@TotHappy every day's a school day. My Scottish mum always does fried leftover potatoes with cooked breakfast. We sometimes have them if leftovers are available. I just assumed it was a Scottish thing. She's just confirmed it was a family thing, her DGM was Cornish. Learnt something new!

itsalwaysthesame · 06/01/2024 21:41

Fried egg & bacon, sausage, bubble & squeak, tinned plum tomatoes with thick white bread toasted & buttered

Beans, black pudding I'm not fussed about and fried bread is vile

English breakfast, it says.

Can you imagine the fuss if people started adding their English recipes to a Welsh recipes thread?

Gammon the op asked for other places. RTFT.

MasterBeth · 07/01/2024 00:08

Gammon has no place in an English breakfast.

Anothernewmum1 · 07/01/2024 00:40

Strong tea to start ( I like Lipton on holiday or Yorkshire)

bacon
sausage
mushroom
hash brown
white toast
beans
fried egg

optional for the next level: fried bread/ black pudding

never chips or tinned Toms.

if you’re feeling extra, breakfast pudding is good- a pecan plait or choc biscuit to round it off.

I’m awake for probably not the first time tonight with the baby and now I’m sad it’s not morning and we have none of the above in.
