I live abroad and make an English breakfast about twice a year 😂
I have fond memories of being a child and coming downstairs to the smell of bacon and cracking of eggs.
I fancy doing one this Sunday, what are the ideal things to have?
We had the full things as kids (no beans though! 🤮) but we had fried bread etc, I’ll likely just do toast, but it will be white and it will be Warburtons. Love mushrooms too, tomatoes I’m not sure as I’d do normal, proper tomatoes fried, but we had plum tomatoes as a kid? Which is best?

Sausage (what do you mean you don’t like them?!), bacon (back not streaky, very crispy), eggs and toast (thickly sliced white farmhouse with butter) is all that’s vital I think. With mustard for me.

Tomatoes (fresh, slow cooked), flat mushrooms and black pudding (what do you mean you don’t like it!) are all top additions.

I don’t think you really need sauté potatoes because you have toast, but no harm in them, and they are much nicer than hash browns. Fried bread is not all that and too much with a full English.

Has to be tea not coffee!

Orange juice is great.

Baked beans are completely wrong as you say, and so are chips, button mushrooms, tinned tomatoes and coffee. There have to be rules.

Janinejones · 05/01/2024 23:39

Should include Black pud. skip the toms, mush if large field type.
Tea in a mug please.
Toast with b u t t e r and home made marmalade.
Or:
Porridge, poached egg(2?) on toast. Coffee.

Ulster fry, it blows all the others out of the water (as said by a BBC journo when he compared them). Astounds me that the other varieties of fry ups dont have it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_breakfast#Ulster

You need potato bread (called "potato cakes" in the link below for some reason). Mixing it in with eggs/sausages etc...utterly delicious. A fry up without potato bread wouldn't be a fry up to me. It's the base of the meal.

Oh yes the mushrooms…do they have to be button or just sliced?

NEVER button - flat field mushrooms, always

theduchessofspork · 05/01/2024 23:41

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 22:54

Would it be weird to make the mushrooms garlic ones? It would, wouldn’t it

I will allow that. But don’t go over the top.

Glitterybee · 05/01/2024 23:41

Irish breakfast is better….

pretty much the same but add soda bread & potato bread. No beans or hash brown.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/01/2024 23:44

I like mine to include hash browns and baked beans but I’m vegetarian. So with that I’d have eggs (fried) and mushrooms. And toast.

Meat eaters would want bacon as well of course.

I dont consider sausages a traditional part of a full English but I think most do (putting aside veggie or not for a minute).

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 23:45

@DC1888 Potato cakes!! I love those…used to have them when I was ill when young (for some unknown reason) lots of butter on…but on a fry up 🤔 seems…different..they are very lovely though, proper stodgy ness

This might be pretentious but the idea tea for a full breakfast is Orange Pekoe. It’s stronger. Nothing to do with oranges.

Orange juice too ideally.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 23:48

I hate tea 😕I’ll have a cappuccino with my breakfast, which sounds a bit wanky, but it’s just what I like 🤷🏻‍♀️

@trippily I did it by accident, okay? It was just a lighthearted thread, not one to be nasty or put people down on, just a thread about my excitement about my breakfast on Sunday. I don’t even live in England anymore, I didn’t think, was just posting about my breakfast. How to put a downer on things.

If you report your thread you could ask MN to change it to the England flag. That way hopefully you won't keep getting the comments.

Our house it was

Eggs usually fried.
Bacon
Sausages
Black Pudding
Fried Tomatoes
Mushrooms
Toast

My dad was a butcher and made his own sausage and black pudding.

No beans, no fried bread, tomatoes were fresh not tinned. Eggs were usually fried as they would be fried in the pan as soon as the sausages and bacon were done.

Fry-ups were not an occasional thing, my dad made them every weekend, and bacon, sausage & egg butties were my DFs lunches most days, he’d make them in the morning and have them for his lunch.

RosieBurdock · 06/01/2024 00:00

I like wholemeal toast, beans, mushrooms, eggs, bacon or sausage.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 06/01/2024 00:02

@RosieBurdock Thank you, I’ve just reported it

@AliceMcK I think we had it every Sunday or pretty much most Sundays

I'm vegetarian, and hate beans, so would have:

Veggie sausages
Veggie "bacon"
Eggs, either poached or scrambled
Loads of mushrooms, sliced and fried 😋
Tomatoes, ideally cherry or baby plums, fried, even better if tossed in paprika beforehand
Tattie scones are my preferred carbs, failing that, or possibly as well as,
Doorstep white toast with butter to soak everything up.
Also hash browns, I don't care how "American" they are; I love them.

Mmmm.....😋

Notthatcatagain · 06/01/2024 00:05

The tinned cherry tomatoes are very nice on a breakfast, sweet little whole tomatoes in a thick sauce

Minewasthesame · 06/01/2024 00:07

Sausage, crispy bacon, hash browns, tomatoes, egg (poached IMO).

UnctuousUnicorns · 06/01/2024 00:07

theduchessofspork · 05/01/2024 23:39

NEVER button - flat field mushrooms, always

All mushrooms are good, just pile 'em on my plate! 👍

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 06/01/2024 00:10

I’m sure it’s been said, but the sauce has to be HP, Daddies or other brown sauce.

LessonsLearnedInLife · 06/01/2024 00:15

I’ve never heard of a full breakfast with tinned tomatoes. You learn something new every day!

If I’m making a full breakfast it’s

Square sausage
Link sausage
Bacon
Haggis or white pudding
Black pudding
Fried egg
Potato scone or fried bread
Fried mushrooms
Fried tomato
Beans in a separate dish
Toast

Normally served with orange juice and copious amounts of tea.

UnctuousUnicorns · 06/01/2024 00:16

Strangely enough, since going vegetarian, I don't crave steak or any "high value" meat, but I do occasionally hanker after offal - kidneys, liver, heart, black pudding etc. I haven't succumbed, but that's what I miss most. That and seafood (not actual fish) - cockles, mussels, winkles, prawns etc. Dunno what that says about me. 😅

TotHappy · 06/01/2024 00:25

No to beans, they're an (earlier) American import, just like the accursed hash brown.
Yes to fried tomato, cherry or baby plum is best. Fry them in the bacon pan, they get all salty and gorgeous.

I agree that I don't think sausage is an essential part, we would occasionally have them when I was little, but bacon IS essential. And fried egg for a proper fry up. And dad used to do us fried bread but I agree you don't see it anymore and I don't know how to make it! I like fried mushrooms too but they should be well fried, not just limp.

And also, here in Cornwall - fried potatoes. Not chips. I usually do 'teddy rattlers' which is fried (sautéed I suppose) from raw but you can use parboiled for a softer finish. I wouldn't call it a proper cooked breakfast without fried potato.

Caroparo52 · 06/01/2024 00:25

Crispy Bacon
Herb Sausage
Fried eggs
Fried bread
Baked beans
Fried mushroom and tomatoes

Toast
Butter
Marmalade

Tea or coffee

Bellabatwings · 06/01/2024 00:28

Onion lorne
smoked streaky bacon
fried eggs
tattie scones
beans
and a coffee and kitkat afterwards… you need something sweet after a fry up!
