She won't let me in her house

I have a friend I met through work. We've been friends 5 years. She doesn't let any friends in her house. We've been on nights out and to meals together but she won't let anyone in her house. I dropped her home the other day and I was desperate for the toilet and she wouldn't let me in to use it. Has anyone else had this before?

Still laughing at ‘phantom wee’.

YANBU OP, it’s part of friendship not to leave people who have done you favours in discomfort. She is very rude and also probably a bit odd.

@Xmasdread22 you say you know she has broken appliances that she won't let handymen in to fix. If that's the case then she's clearly adamant that no one from outside is allowed in her house so it's no surprise she wouldn't let you in for a wee. All the posters here who are saying she's bonkers, ridiculous, rude are seeing this in completely the wrong way. This woman has serious issues around home / house. It could well be hoarding, or that she is unable to let her place clean and tidy to a pathological extent rather than "a little bit of mess".
So what seems completely innocuous and normal to most isn't to her.

The person I know with OCD has similar issues about letting people in his house.

Fair enough. But then OP's 'friend' shouldn't accept a lift. After all, that's getting inside someone else's private space, albeit their car.

But the OP is happy to open up her car, her private space, the friend is not happy to invite someone into her home so it’s completely different.

I happily give lifts, I don't let people in my house... its not remotely the same.

Some of these replies are bizarre. It's really simple .

Op: "would you like a lift home?"
Friend: "yes please"
Arrive at house
Op "do you mind if I use your loo before I head back?"
Friend: "No"

At that point op realised that the not being invited to friends house was actually you are never allowed to step foot in here.

Got it in one @notmyrealuserna

Nah any adult with a grain of emotional intelligence should be able to tell that someone guarded about inviting people over also doesn’t want people in their house to use the toilet m.

I'm not sure I agree with you @Lookingforbiscoff. I would have thought that the recipient of the lift might have made an exception for this.

Why? The fact that somebody wants to use your toilet doesn't override the anxiety you have about people coming into your house. It magnifies it, if anything.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 12:15

Why?

Probably because I can understand what it would be like to be in the OP's position.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 03/02/2024 12:24

I think it shows a massive lack of understanding of mental health issues if someone thinks that a lady who lives with broken appliances (not to mention hasn’t had anyone at all in the house in the time the Op has known her) because she can’t bear anyone in her house can just easily make an exception.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 12:29

Yes, you are probably right @YetMoreNewBeginnings
