Not the teeth kind, the hold-your-trousers -up kind.

he’s put on some weight over the last year or two and finds it hard to get his trousers to stay up over / under his tummy. Belts don’t seem to help. So he has bought braces.

he’s also started wearing cardigans. So he does that thing where he puts his hands in his pockets, tucks the cardigans behind them, and exposes the braces. He hasn’t quite started rocking back on his heels and sucking in air through his teeth while shaking his head slowly, but it’s not far off.

he’s only 55. 😱

Isn’t he too young?? My dad is 77 and he wears braces (I think that’s where DH got the idea).

AIBU to hate them?

Braces do seem to go in an out of fashion. I used to wear them as a teenager around 20 years ago.

Ping the braces. That’s the only good side to them - the excellent pinging opportunities.

I had massive issue with husband and clothes a few years ago. We used to argue every time we went out together as I would make an effort and he just threw on whatever was clean. Our eventual solution was to go to a nice man’s shop in the sales - one that catered to his age range (was 55). We bought a couple of pairs of trousers, jacket, few shirts, all of which could be worn together in any combination. We found having an experienced sales man making suggestions really helped, and he felt much better about himself. He then bought some nice boots and shoes. The trousers were all casual grown up chinos, the jacket a bit tweedy, oh and a quite bright waistcoat, the shirts quite country gent. He still wears all of it, and I have replaced the trousers a couple of times on Vinted. The makes are Meyer, bruhl for trousers, jaeger for jacket. But you could do the same thing in M&S. But do it with him and keep telling him how good he looks……

Personally, I think braces are brilliant. Very charming.

@rickyrickygrimes He sounds lovely! Mine bought these horrible booties that I have refused to be seen out with him wearing, they’re that bad. Italian Handmade Suede Velcro High Boots, Becks Shoes Men Waterproof Non-Slip Breathable Outdoor Casual Sneakers, Velcro Shoes for Men https://amzn.eu/d/jgQJQNE

These reminded me of my toddler’s first shoes!

Gosh. He sounds like my kind of man. Adorable.

Oh, my. 😍

Omg everyone going on about how attractive they can find braces... the OP's DH is clearly not part of the ska/punk type crowd nor a high flying sharp suited business man 😅.

OP you have my sympathies. My husband buys all his trousers from an 'oversize' specialist shop despite not being that overweight and looking perfectly decent/attractive in normal jeans or combats or whatever. They form a kind of poo filled nappy look around his arse and I cannot walk behind him for that reason.

LonelyAndLostToo · 04/01/2024 06:30

Has he moved on to taupe/beige tousers hoisted to nipple height yet? I think thats when you will have real problems

megletthesecond · 04/01/2024 06:41

He needs to be very careful if he's gained lots of weight around his middle. Braces are fine. Future heart attack and diabetes not so much.

GothConversionTherapy · 04/01/2024 06:59

Embrace it and get him novelty ones with piano keys or measuring tape printed on them. Maybe you endorsing them will put him off...

Standrews · 04/01/2024 10:59

When I first met my husband he was wearing a cable knit cardigan with pockets and smoked a pipe (back in the 60's) and I fell for him hook line and sinker. So laid back and friendly I mentally drooled. He was only 27. He no longer smokes a pipe but get him in a casual knit over a shirt and I still think he looks quite a hunk. He is very slim (in his 80's now) so no worry about beer tummies. If a man is comfortable in what he wears I think you see the man not the braces and cardies! One good point made a few times above is when men bend over and we are given a view of a backside crease, wearing a pair of braces is a very good thing!

JG4 · 04/01/2024 16:27

I buy all of my husband’s clothes to avoid this problem 😂 he still buys atrocious things every now and then , but also appreciates his really nice clothes I get him for birthdays & Christmas

OP's DH (sorry OP)

DH came home with braces.
notjaneausten · 05/01/2024 08:04

If he’s getting fat round the middle, braces will be much more comfortable.
My ex was a lorry driver, ditching a tight belt in favour of braces was a life changer.
