Not the teeth kind, the hold-your-trousers -up kind.

he’s put on some weight over the last year or two and finds it hard to get his trousers to stay up over / under his tummy. Belts don’t seem to help. So he has bought braces.

he’s also started wearing cardigans. So he does that thing where he puts his hands in his pockets, tucks the cardigans behind them, and exposes the braces. He hasn’t quite started rocking back on his heels and sucking in air through his teeth while shaking his head slowly, but it’s not far off.

he’s only 55. 😱

Isn’t he too young?? My dad is 77 and he wears braces (I think that’s where DH got the idea).

AIBU to hate them?

Can you get him to adopt some cool waistcoats as a style? Might look less old man, more ageing funkster... Plus they'd help hide the braces. Or at least make them look deliberately part of his look.

Would he just wear his cardigan over the top, though?😬

Oh dear lord no ...

pizzaHeart · 02/01/2024 18:08

All male teachers at DD’s secondary wore suits. I always assumed that it’s some sort of dress code, is it not?

Somatosensational · 02/01/2024 18:09

Get him a pipe

FlyingCherub · 02/01/2024 18:09

I feel your pain, OP. DH is 59 and has taken to wearing his golf clothing as casual wear. All 100% polyester, shocking colours, clings like superglue and he's very tall with a tubby belly and chicken legs. I'm embarrassed to go anywhere with him most of the time. He's always been eccentric with clothes, but this is just hideous. And he genuinely thinks he looks great Shock

His alternative is the one pair of jeans he's had for about 7 years but can't replace as he can't find the exact same pair ....

2chocolateoranges · 02/01/2024 18:09

Braces are all the rage. Ds (21) went for a suit at a well known retailer and most of the younger salespeople had braces on with their suits.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 02/01/2024 18:09

I see braces and I just want to twang them.
But I get that they stop builders bum, which whenever I see one, I just wish I had a perky daffodil (iykyk)

nocoolnamesleft · 02/01/2024 18:13

Does he have hairy feet? And eat second breakfast?

Kwam31 · 02/01/2024 18:14

I just imagined Victor from Still Game 🤣

rickyrickygrimes · 02/01/2024 18:14

@FlyingCherub

yes, he’s always been a bit eccentric with clothes. I think he’s so determined not to dress like his dad (check shirt and round neck jumper over, perfectly normal way to dress) he goes too far the other way. 🤷‍♀️

@LubaLuca - I didn't think it out! You are so right! 😀

I know some men in their 30s in braces. Not all weight related, some just prefer them. They can be quite sexy...

Definitely! An Edwardian aesthetic.

But definitely lose the cardigan!....oh and no pipe and slippers either!

You made me LOL. The image of your eye-catching DH is stuck in my mind now & will bring joy whenever I think of it.

... and gratitude that my own DH shuns all loud colours & unnatural fabrics, & getting him to clothes shop takes weeks of pleading or gentle persuasion. When Covid hit I mail-ordered all the jeans & cords I found in his size just before Debenhams disappeared (he'd bought some in-store, so I knew exactly what to buy), so his wardrobe is well-stocked & for the next 20 years he doesn't have to take his trousers off in a changing room which is apparently a no-no for a red-blooded Englishman...

DH came home with braces.
GalileoHumpkins · 02/01/2024 18:21

On a fit young bloke with floppy hair and a satchel that would be very attractive.

RallySooney · 02/01/2024 18:23

My dh wears braces. He works in the fashion industry and braces have always been part of his wardrobe. They can look stylish.

Georgyporky · 02/01/2024 18:23

He needs a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches to complete the look

Hankunamatata · 02/01/2024 18:24

Since he likes Hawaiian shirts perhaps order him some loud style waistcoats to cover suspenders

baubl · 02/01/2024 18:24

Omg. LTB.

Hankunamatata · 02/01/2024 18:24

Suspenders oops I mean braces 😬

MissyB1 · 02/01/2024 18:26

Does he have a corduroy blazer with leather patches on the elbows?

Grumpsy · 02/01/2024 18:27

I find braces incredibly sexy… on the likes of don draper

TroysMammy · 02/01/2024 18:28

Does the cardigan have pockets and leather covered buttons?

ElephantMilk · 02/01/2024 18:29

This made me chuckle. I think the struggle is real though. Once the belly gets round enough trousers tend to slip down. 😂
