Not the teeth kind, the hold-your-trousers -up kind.

he’s put on some weight over the last year or two and finds it hard to get his trousers to stay up over / under his tummy. Belts don’t seem to help. So he has bought braces.

he’s also started wearing cardigans. So he does that thing where he puts his hands in his pockets, tucks the cardigans behind them, and exposes the braces. He hasn’t quite started rocking back on his heels and sucking in air through his teeth while shaking his head slowly, but it’s not far off.

he’s only 55. 😱

Isn’t he too young?? My dad is 77 and he wears braces (I think that’s where DH got the idea).

AIBU to hate them?

@tolerable aw that’s cute. I want my son to get some now

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/01/2024 17:21

Have you bought him a pipe and tweed jacket for the full ensemble?

San141 · 02/01/2024 17:26

Braces always make me smile ( I think of "rock in tommy" whan he would bend his knees and pull his braces!

totalnamechanger · 02/01/2024 17:28

I sometimes think I need to leave MN and all the timewasting and doom scrolling that it can entail but every now and then something comes up like this 😂 Thanks, OP.

RedToothBrush · 02/01/2024 17:28

You should be more worried about the cardigan.

Theres a few Dads at school who wear cardigans. DH has sworn not to associate with them (I am actually serious about this!) as he finds them so offensive. These are men in their 40s and 50s with kids at primary school.

honeyandfizz · 02/01/2024 17:28

Wearing braces because he cannot get his trousers to stay over his gut?? Nooooooo. 😬

What sort of look is your DH aiming for? Maybe take him shopping in Jermyn St or Savile Row?

😂😂😂 did you miss that he’s a geography teacher? His winter wardrobe is mostly ancient waterproofs, the summer wardrobe is loud Hawaiian shirts. He is completely unfashionable and I’ve always been fine with that - but the braces have tipped me over the edge.

Your DH must be related to mine. Does he shop in charity shops too? DH will buy an old fleece in a charity shop and wear it continuously, usually matching blue with brown and with an old Regatta waterproof jacket on top. He wears Merrell walking shoes from Millets too. He is lovely and not at all vain but sometimes I just have to hide things (in the bin!)

DH is 40 & wears braces. He isn't overweight but is a tradesman & doesn't want to be one of those that ends up with his bum out bending over

For this reason, I wish more men would wear braces. They're practical and I imagine they're more comfortable than a belt.

Fingeronthebutton · 02/01/2024 17:35

I spend a lot of time in Leigh on Sea. A lot of young men are wearing what you describe. But you have to have the whole look.

MILTOBE · 02/01/2024 17:36

I know you shouldn't have to do this, but could you buy him some clothes? And chuck some of the others in the bin.

He should be a good example to the ones with their bums out, I wish they'd all follow his lead. I often wonder if they actually like showing their bums off or don't they realise it is on show.

millymog11 · 02/01/2024 17:46

How old are you OP?

Are you a lot younger than your husbands 55 (literally in years or in youthful spirit, either will do)....?

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2024 17:46

Theaspidistraiswilting · 02/01/2024 16:50

My husband has adopted a cap. It makes him look like something out of the last of the summer wine. It is not attractive. I have hidden it.

My best friend wears one. He's 74 but it ages him loads. I feel your pain. I hate it as well!

Moonlaserbearwolf · 02/01/2024 17:47

I know a few glam geog teachers who would hit you with their colouring pencils for suggesting geog teachers can’t be fashionable…

Toddlerteaplease · 02/01/2024 17:47

I know someone who wears braces. He got married in with no jacket or cardigan over the top. He's over weight and he looked absolutely ridiculous. But hopefully his wife like them.

Savedpassword · 02/01/2024 17:51

My Ex arrived one day wearing a flat cap. I died laughing.

kittensinthekitchen · 02/01/2024 17:54

I'll be the one to say it.....

YABU

If a man posted that he didn't like what his wife had started dressing like, and encouraging others to give an opinion on her choice of clothing, he'd (rightly) be told to STFU.

See I like a man in a cardigan. I'm not sure about braces though unless they are cool with DMs maybe?

topnoddy · 02/01/2024 17:57

Rock on Tommy style ?

It would be a brave statement for a geography teacher to make, going back to school in January as a bovver boy.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 02/01/2024 18:02

My DH bought an 'old man's hat' last year & it sits on the parcel shelf of his car. So cringe.

But that's not as bad as the Russian furry ear flaps hat he bought ages ago & which I've refused to let him wear if we're out together. He says it keeps his ears warm. I say it makes him look stupid. There is no compromise to be found.

I told him decades ago I'd divorce him if he ever bought football-button cardigans or old-fashioned striped pyjamas, & thankfully he hasn't. He's finally developing a sweet little belly, so maybe braces aren't far off now.

Mmmkaay · 02/01/2024 18:05

Can you get him to adopt some cool waistcoats as a style? Might look less old man, more ageing funkster... Plus they'd help hide the braces. Or at least make them look deliberately part of his look.

Is Leigh on Sea known as a centre of fashion? (And where the hell is it, anyway?😂)
