DH came home with braces.

Not the teeth kind, the hold-your-trousers -up kind.

he’s put on some weight over the last year or two and finds it hard to get his trousers to stay up over / under his tummy. Belts don’t seem to help. So he has bought braces.

he’s also started wearing cardigans. So he does that thing where he puts his hands in his pockets, tucks the cardigans behind them, and exposes the braces. He hasn’t quite started rocking back on his heels and sucking in air through his teeth while shaking his head slowly, but it’s not far off.

he’s only 55. 😱

Isn’t he too young?? My dad is 77 and he wears braces (I think that’s where DH got the idea).

AIBU to hate them?

Mine wears them because he finds them a lot more comfortable than a belt! I’ve grown to love them Grin

Hankunamatata · 02/01/2024 18:33

Something like this to go with braces and school. He could get whole theme range

DH came home with braces.
Luckyduc · 02/01/2024 18:35

He's 55. People wore these in their 20s back in the day. He's too old to be keeping up with trends now. Let him be happy.

dlago · 02/01/2024 18:38

Mr D has been rocking the braces and cardigan look for years!

Grammarnut · 02/01/2024 18:41

My DH has worn braces ever since I met him 27 years ago, when he was 49. He has always worn them even when he was slim and athletic and teams them with a variety of jackets and waistcoats, fringed buckskins and evening jackets (also grotty jumpers but that's only when he is working around the house). I find them sexy. I find suits sexy, too. Get DH some colourful braces and btw he has made the right choice, the clip-on things come undone and are a real pain (also yuppy).

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 02/01/2024 18:44

Mine had been threatening to get them for years, he held out to 57. Dd1 and I threatened to disown him but youngest Dd encouraged him. Dd1 is horrified but she's a teen so she would be horrified anyway. I figure he's equally horrified with a hippie/gothy DW and a fully goth Dd1 so we all just paddle our own canoes and make for a motley looking bunch when we travel as a pack.

@KT8282 oh god he’s so far from a punk style! More geography teacher (this is actually what he is). He’s always moaning about his wardrobe and his clothes, that he doesn’t look good - but he keeps buying horrible stuff.

This made me chuckle out loud 🤪

Mikimoto · 02/01/2024 18:45

Do you think he works part-time in a bar in Brooklyn?

@Theaspidistraiswilting

Compo was the first image that came to mind 😱

@rickyrickygrimes

I'm the same age as your DH, I'm seeing a bloke who is a bit older (62) & he has a bit of a belly and some bloating.

id have to restrain myself from laughing, but given I have my own age/weight issues.

I think this is your issue, not his. Up to him what he wears.

If you have a problem with his gut, then take that up with him, as losing weight around the middle would probably be for his own good too.

About seven years ago I decided not to shave over Christmas and then kept the beard and moustache, which eventually grew into a handlebar. Several months later I was caught unconsciously twirling it while watching TV. My DP in no uncertain terms told me that "you're allowed to have a moustache but you're not allowed to be a knob".

I thought it was a fair comment which I took on board. My moustache now looks like I'm an exiled and less good looking member of the Russian royal family but I keep twirling it for my Dick Dastardly moments!!!

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/01/2024 19:13

Our 20 year old wears braces. If it’s as difficult for men to find trousers that fit as it is for lots of women, I don’t blame him.
Why would it bother me anyway? None of my beeswax.

PhoebesHusband · 02/01/2024 19:19

Men's trousers are not cut right (if shop bought), needs a higher rise. to fasten belt in waist.
Braces keep trousers at shoe level. Think of photos of Boris and politicians with concertina effect above shoe.
Braces and Waistcoat are right. If country or county, then a cap is smart casual and functional. Ideal for carrying a few mushrooms or new laid eggs back to the kitchen.

tachetastic · 02/01/2024 19:23

Can you imagine if a man came on here and commented that he didn't like his DW's new clothes which she really liked and found comfortable for her body shape, and asked if he was he being unreasonable for hating them?

I am guessing two thirds of responses would NOT be telling him that he was not being unreasonable.

BlueThursday · 02/01/2024 19:28

Braces can vary wildly between Terry Jeffords style or Victor McDaid

nzborn · 02/01/2024 19:32

I don't know what they are called but you can get a sort of brace thing that clips on to your shirt end goes down your leg and holds on similar, to splats that used to hold socks up

DaftFlerken · 02/01/2024 19:32

Iwasafool · 02/01/2024 17:41

He should be a good example to the ones with their bums out, I wish they'd all follow his lead. I often wonder if they actually like showing their bums off or don't they realise it is on show.

They mostly genuinely don’t realise, DH has so many tools in his pockets & belts that he’d be forever pulling his trousers up

junebirthdaygirl · 02/01/2024 19:35

Actually read a whole article today about the latest craze..Grandpacore..which says we are entering an era of eclectic grandpa style a trend very popular with Gen Z. Mentions cardigans and even braces! So he is with it and will be right on trend.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 02/01/2024 19:44

One of my friends wears braces and a cap. I think of it as 'Fred Dibnah chic'.

Just seen it too, after reading this thread!

Will you be wearing the new grandpacore look?

Last year grandmacore was a thing, but in 2024 it’s older men to whom the youngsters are paying style homage. It’s all over social media, says Anna Murphy

Hedgesfullofbirds · 02/01/2024 23:23

Well I wear them regularly and find them much more efficient than a belt and feel that they are overdue a return. Along with men dressing smartly in proper jackets, waistcoats, pocket watches with chains, high collared shirts a ĺà Edwardian fashion, which was so much nicer than the ubiquitous joggers, leisure wear and trainers worn today which, to my mind, just looks scruffy, lazy, slovenly and deeply unattractive...

But, I have also been known to wear nehru collared waistcoats combined with Victorian frock coats as everyday apparel. Oh, and the handkerchief in one's top pocket should either be a triangle or casually hanging out - not the modern trend of a flat knife edge parallel with the pocket top and barely visible.

But cardigans are a definite 'no, no'. Standards, after all!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/01/2024 23:35

Dh favours braces over belts. I don’t care really, but I have bought him many pairs , including smart imitation ( because elastic) denim for jeans, beautiful blue flames , various checks, racing ones with horses …..my favourite are the gardening ones which have pictures of trowel, rake , watering can, pruners etc.

actually , they are a blessing because there is always something to give him if my invention fails.

StBrides · 02/01/2024 23:37

Does the cardigan have elbow patches?

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 02/01/2024 23:50

It’s a practical solution to his problem 🤷‍♀️

If he got rid of the problem, he wouldn’t need the solution!
