Farting on trains

It seems to happen quite frequently these days, and 99% of the time it's men. It's disgusting, I know sometimes it's not deliberate but leaving a stench like that for other people is vile, and you can't always open windows on trains, like the Avanti one I'm currently on.
If it's not that, it's people chewing their nails and then wiping it on whatever they find, picking their nose, generally disgusting habits to do on a packed train. Again the vast majority are men.

Agree. This is so common on MN. Pretend confusion and misunderstanding to make the person feel like shit. It's really weird and is very secondary school bully behaviour.

Same with women clipping or filing their nails (especially toe nails) and applying generous amounts of perfume. i do prefer fart over perfume though - at least its possible that the person couldn’t help it.

I was in town other week...this guy farted loudly walking past...and i can tell he pushed it out, he went on oblivious, total turn off...not farting, but just letting rip in public

The anus has two sphinctres specifically controlling and sensing whether it is wind or solid matter, and for most people they can hold it in.

The vagina is not similarly equippped. HTH.

Me too! I read it just before going to bed, and thought about it again as I was going off to sleep - honestly, it woke DH up because the bed was bouncing so much with me trying to contain the hysteria.

And thank you @MolkosTeenageAngst - life is a little tricky right now and I haven't belly-laughed like that in far too long. I'm sorry it was your misfortune that caused it, but I hope by knowing that you have really brightened someone's day, that it makes up for it!

I was talking about farts. Farts and period blood are very different. Farts can be controlled, period blood can’t.

I assume you were joking when you asked, but if not there are some serious gut issues out there that I know nothing about.

I think the question is not whether people fart but whether they make the effort to hold them in in public.

I don’t find farts as funny as some people seem to. While it is possible for the noise or the silliness to be funny on the odd occasion, if I actually smell the smell, all I feel is depression and revulsion.

And if I know who did it, they lose all appeal to me. They become disgusting to me in that moment. (And if they keep doing it, they become just that bit less appealing overall.)

Sorry but this has cracked me up 😂🤣. I am another one who finds farts hilarious. I have IBS and if I eat something that disagrees with me, I can be farting every minute (no exaggeration). Holding it in would just be far too excruciating. My husband has said he wants me to buy him a gas mask 😷

I don't find farts funny (I dont really get whats funny about a noise and/or stench?) and unfortunately I've got a bit of a sensitive stomach and the the smell alone can make me heave BUT I do understand that they can't always be helped. Someone was letting rip on a flight I was on earlier this year and it was absolutely foul; I was near vomiting. What can you do though -it's a bodily function and if you are in a shared public space you are going to encounter things you don't particularly like.
