Farting on trains

Mermaidsgalore · 21/12/2023 17:02

It seems to happen quite frequently these days, and 99% of the time it's men. It's disgusting, I know sometimes it's not deliberate but leaving a stench like that for other people is vile, and you can't always open windows on trains, like the Avanti one I'm currently on.
If it's not that, it's people chewing their nails and then wiping it on whatever they find, picking their nose, generally disgusting habits to do on a packed train. Again the vast majority are men.

Better out than in!

I can see the men nose picking etc. and usually when there have suddenly been horrid smells, I'm sitting next to or around a bunch of men

It's yet another man- hating thread... that's all

Better out than in!

For the farter sure, not so much for those around them 😷😄

Tibbb · 21/12/2023 18:25

Women can be just as bad. The worst I saw was on holiday when the woman next to me at the evening buffet picked her bum through her sundress and then carried on gathering food, without even cleaning her hands afterwards.🤢 It disgusted me and put me off my food.

Also I've worked in places where used tampons and pads were left next to the toilet rather than being disposed of.

sprigatito · 21/12/2023 17:04

Of course it's largely men, all antisocial behaviour is. They feel entitled to behave like that.

Well this is the most stupid thing I’ve read today, congratulations!

Deathbyfluffy · 21/12/2023 18:27

TravelInHope · 21/12/2023 17:21

Yes, generally speaking everything is the fault of those vile creatures.

The only vile creature here is someone who groups a whole gender together and chastises them - that’ll be you. 😘

Charlize43 · 21/12/2023 18:28

Is this the usual MN man bashing thread or is it about farts because I have IBS and have to own up to dropping a few in my time. It really depends on what I've eaten. I absolutely can't eat anything with onions in as that makes me very bloated and windy.

Topseyt123 · 21/12/2023 18:28

You can't be on a train surrounded by people and expect nobody to fart!

Anyway, farts are hilarious. Comedy gold. 🤣🤣

TippyToes123 · 21/12/2023 18:30

idontlikealdi · 21/12/2023 18:09

I know you like to think you're shit don't stink...

How do you contain a fart ffs?

Just clench! It's easy! What the hell are you all eating that you can't go a couple of hours without passing wind?

pixie1345 · 21/12/2023 18:37

😂love this post😂😂

roombaclean · 21/12/2023 18:40

i do prefer fart over perfume

Hmm
WiddlinDiddlin · 21/12/2023 18:45

I think the assertion that most people can hold in a fart... for apparently any amount of time... is a bold one. What do you base that on PP, because 'I can', is insufficient data and not sound science.

Loads of people cannot (source: I talk about this sort of thing to everyone I know..), any more than they can control stench, volume or pitch.

If you're particularly sensitive to the noxious fumes produced by other humans the best plan is to avoid being in confined spaces with other humans.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/12/2023 18:47

And why is everyone acting like Dom Joly now with their phones on full blast? Everyone has flashy earbuds but no one is using them. Baffling .

DewHopper · 21/12/2023 18:52

AShiningThongOfAngels · 21/12/2023 17:59

Ha ha. No!

So who was swearing then? Confused.

WillowTit · 21/12/2023 18:53

all antisocial behaviour is

Gross generalisation.

It’s MN, any excuse to blame/hate men for something.

SALWARP2023 · 21/12/2023 18:59

You really are a man hater! I have IBS and suffer with wind. So sad you are so intolerant.

I don't think it is odd to assume that most people have some kind of rudimentary sphincter control that allows them to not fart the instant they feel the urge thus allowing them to wait a little while for a more socially considerate moment (I.e. getting off thr bus, train, out of the car etc). Sure if you are stuck on the London to Glasgow train or half way across the Atlantic on a flight you might have to take Elsa's cue and let it go.

Lilacanemone · 21/12/2023 19:10

Carry some air freshener and when someone drops one, wrinkle up your nose, mutter “disgusting” (so everyone knows it wasn’t you) and spray liberally.

Ortila · 21/12/2023 19:11

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/12/2023 18:10

Train behaviour was always vile but post Covid it's absolutely revolting now.🤢

Yes, I agree.

For a long time the only people on public transport were the people who had no choice but to be there. Anyone who was financially and physically capable of driving didn't catch a bus or train for about 18 months. So for that 18 months the drunks/losers made up a larger proportion of passengers than previously and they kind of relaxed into poor behaviour to the point where it became normal.

Now ofc with all the strikes a lot of people will drive if they can because it's the only way to guarantee you'll get to where you need to be so we've not really had a sustained patch of time where lots of people who know how to behave use public transport, for years.

That's just childish.

What about the people who can't help it?

I have IBS. The one time I tried to hold it in I ended up up throwing up all over the carriage (2 hour train journey) because I ended up being so sick from the pressure in my stomach.

Not everyone is gross. Some of us genuinely cannot help it.

Someone on the Tattle thread has just compared MN as the reverse, female version of Reddit and the Incels.

Sometimes, like on this thread, I can see the analogy.

I have IBS as well. I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy.

You never know when or how something you've eaten is going to affect you. Even a biscuit (another one of my killers is oats) can send me over the edge.

Luckily I've found that public places with toilets are quite sympathetic if you mention that you have IBS or Crohns and need a toilet fast!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 21/12/2023 17:07

I mean, it’s not great to sit there stiffing other peoples farts, but it’s just a bodily function. I don’t get the drama about it, but maybe years working in health care has made me less sensitive. it would make my job very difficult if I was horrified by every fart.

Same. I've had people literally fart in my face, no clothes on. They can't help it.

I'd recommend wearing a good face mask, not looking at people, and learning to drive. The things you can't control, you need to learn to ignore.

lol
sorry but this thread amuses me, although I do understand. Public transport sucks for many reasons. Can't they just go to the toilet and do it?
