Farting on trains

It seems to happen quite frequently these days, and 99% of the time it's men. It's disgusting, I know sometimes it's not deliberate but leaving a stench like that for other people is vile, and you can't always open windows on trains, like the Avanti one I'm currently on.
If it's not that, it's people chewing their nails and then wiping it on whatever they find, picking their nose, generally disgusting habits to do on a packed train. Again the vast majority are men.

I have to say that at the gym the vast majority of gross behaviour is carried out by men. In fact, I can only recall one questionable thing I've seen a women doing in 18 plus years. I hate demonising men like that, but it's the absolute truth. Bum picking, wiping snot on machines, never wiping sweat off equipment, farting, spitting on the floor...I just don't see women do it. It's actually one of the reasons I cancelled my membership to the gym after 18 years of going 6 days a week and invested in my own equipment. Of course there are men who would never behave like this and would find it repulsive -it's certainly not every man. It just sealed the deal watching someone spit on the floor of the steam room one day.

Mermaidsgalore · 21/12/2023 17:33

Eww, that's vile!! I thought that chucking heavy weights onto the floor and shrieking at top note when weightlifting was bad enough...

And if you’re on a long train journey and literally can’t keep holding it because your belly’s hurting. What then? Sometimes you have to let it out soz

Go to the loo.

Mermaidsgalore · 21/12/2023 17:34

Even in the office.. it's usually the women that wipe their desk down, not the men.

Of course it's largely men, all antisocial behaviour is. They feel entitled to behave like that.

This.

girlfriend44 · 21/12/2023 17:38

Its not just trains. I was at an event this week, where people were in close proximity. There was a sudden vile smell enough to make you feel sick.
Nobody said a word, but everyone knew. why don't they stand up and go outside or to the toilet.

AShiningThongOfAngels · 21/12/2023 17:38

I love a good fart thread.

Of all my children (who are now adults), my DD is the loudest and smelliest farter by miles. She beats her brothers hollow.

The last time I caught a train with her, the air was blue.

AShiningThongOfAngels · 21/12/2023 17:39

She used to sing "let it go" before letting rip when she was little.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2023 17:40

I don’t think going to the loo to fart is very realistic advice on a crowded train. I mean first you would have to hold it in while inching your way along a swaying vehicle and then there’s frequently someone else waiting to use the loo after you so you’ve just left it there for them to smell really….

Sugarfish · 21/12/2023 17:41

I can believe it’s mostly men, this is from most men I know openly farting because they either think it’s funny or they don’t care about inflicting their bowel gas on others. I know women can do it as well, I used to work with a women who would drop awful ones every afternoon. She denied it was her but it never happened when she was on annual leave.

And of course most people can hold it in. I can, and if they couldn’t the world would be constantly farty

Topee · 21/12/2023 17:41

I commute but can’t get worked up about a fart. Yes they can smell vile, but it’s not something that everyone can help or hold.

Why? Because people were swearing at her?

WhatTheFuk · 21/12/2023 17:44

With the number of reports I'm hearing of people vomiting and losing control of their bowels on trains and other forms of transport these days, I think I'd take a fart as a lucky escape!

Most gyms I have been a member of have had a fairly clear divide between men and women and the equipment they use. The free weights area is typically 95% men, the weights machines are about 80% men, the cardio gear is usually fairly evenly split and the studio classes 99% women. If you are participating in the former two all poor behaviour observed is invariably go to be men given they make up the overwhelming majority of participants. Bit like saying 'I never see men behave badly in the studio classes' while ignoring the fact that hardly any men use them. As for not wiping down equipment, I dont think either sex has a monopoly on that, its grim behaviour.

Ha ha. No!

AShiningThongOfAngels · 21/12/2023 18:00

I genuinely think farts are funny, btw. I think the world is divided into people who do, and people who don't.

Nobody else sharing a train compartment with your dd will be as entertained as you are, believe me.

marychristmas22 · 21/12/2023 18:08

Nah if I need to fart I'll fart. Then try to look disgusted to avoid suspicion falling on me. It's not good to hold these things in.

idontlikealdi · 21/12/2023 18:09

I know you like to think you're shit don't stink...

How do you contain a fart ffs?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/12/2023 18:10

Train behaviour was always vile but post Covid it's absolutely revolting now.🤢

Findingmypurposeinlife · 21/12/2023 18:10

I usually carry a cheap impulse spray in my bag.
Works wonders.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2023 18:13

I avoid public transport due to the people, the dirt, the unreliability and the sheer hassle. A fart is the least of my worries on a train. Far better than the chewing, slurping and invasion of my space.

So everyone else has to smell Impulse and farts…

Coastalcreeksider · 21/12/2023 18:17

One if my friends has IBD and she does some absolute stinkers but she can't hold them in, has to let them go.

There are lots of people with bowel issues so I wouldn't be too bothered by someone farting on a train or anywhere else.

Better out than in is the old saying I believe.

Vitriolinsanity · 21/12/2023 18:18

You'd think there was nothing so grim as tasting another persons fart on a train.

Until the summer, then you get women parking their smelly, sweaty, unpedicured feet in a pair of nasty, grubby flip flops up on the next seat.
