Am I the only person under 90 who prefers a nightie

to pyjamas?

MN is full of people who snuggle in their PJs, have a pyjama day, love them so much they long to spend the whole of Christmas Day in them.

But me ... I prefer a nightie. Anyone else?

Nighties all my life.

Had pyjamas for a little while as a young kid, but not from choice.

zingally · 16/12/2023 10:22

My best friend swears by a nightie. Especially in the summer.

They're a nope for me though. I've tried them over the years, and I'm a wriggly sleeper, so they always end up bunched up around my armpits!

willWillSmithsmith · 16/12/2023 10:23

I don’t wear nighties but I have a couple of very soft comfy kaftans instead. If I’m having a lazy day where I don’t have to be anywhere then I refer to it as my ‘kaftan’ day.

theDudesmummy · 16/12/2023 10:24

Always nightie. Can't have anything on my legs in bed.

pretzelbreath · 16/12/2023 10:27

I like a nightie and I am definitely under 90! I wear pj's in the day for 'lounging' and then a nightie or a t-shirt to sleep. Mine always wiggle up but i can't stand anything touching my bum or legs in bed. And my mum always said you need to let your bum breathe at night so no knickers either!

I slept nude from age 18 to about 48,when I felt some modesty was required, as I have a son (older mother, I didn't wait until he was 20🤣). I now wear short slip style nighties. They do ride up, but they are so short and thin, there is no bunching problem. I hate being hot in bed. The idea of even short sleeves makes me cringe. To the pp who said they didn't understand the need for your nether regions to "breathe" - it's to help prevent thrush, for those who suffer.

In the warm weather l often don’t wear knickers with long summer dresses when out and about, let alone to bed! NB: This is a summer sport only. I still sleep naked all year though. Heavy period the only exception.

Mathsstatsmaths · 16/12/2023 10:29

Another nightie fan here, always have been. I’ve tried pyjamas but just find them really uncomfortable. I’m also not someone who puts lounging clothes on, just change at bedtime ( helped by the fact my work clothes are not formal ). I always choose long ones with t shirt material and preferably sleeveless. I used to buy from BHS till they closed but have found Cotton Traders do very similar ones so they are what I buy now.

Vicliz24 · 16/12/2023 10:30

I wear pjs around the house but always a nightie to sleep in . Long sleeve jersey or brushed cotton in winter and thin cotton slip style in summer with a few tee shirt styles for Spring and Autumn. Can't bear feeling trussed up in bed .

10HailMarys · 16/12/2023 10:35

I like pyjamas as lounge wear but I don’t sleep in them. I either wear nothing in bed or a nightie (either an oversize t-shirt style one or a short slip style).

I can’t stand sleeping in anything long, or with long sleeves.

Kittensat36 · 16/12/2023 10:39

I am not a big fan of pyjamas, i hate the feeling of the leggings wrapping round me as I turn over. Currently in a long nightie from Peacocks covered in black cats..... Whilst in bed with 2 black cats sleeping on it.

Sartre · 16/12/2023 10:41

I don’t wear either. I wear a baggy tshirt and undies, always have done. I don’t even own pyjamas, haven’t worn them since I was about 14.

Portakalkedi · 16/12/2023 10:42

Pyjamas are too restrictive, love a long nightie. Very hard to find decent ones though that aren't just t shirts with disney characters on them - why would a grown woman want that? Best ones in recent years have been from Lands End (Sleep Tees) long, plain, stretchy cotton, but now i mostly make my own.

chattyness · 16/12/2023 10:42

I don't like PJ's they get bunched up and twisted every time you turn over,so uncomfortable even the shorts kind do it. I can't bear onesies as when you need the loo in the night you have to virtually undress. I wear a nightie that's below the knee but they ride up sometimes when turning over in your sleep & my bum gets cold so I wear big pants with them, problem solved. Sooo sexy....not 🤣

Tessisme · 16/12/2023 10:47

I always find it interesting how different people are when it comes to their comfort in bed. I am always cold, even in mild weather, and wear long sleeved pyjamas pretty much all year, unless it's practically tropical - which is rare in NI😆 if I wear a nightie, I usually put leggings on with it. I would LOVE to have a warmer body temperature. Even going through menopause, I have only very rarely overheated.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 16/12/2023 01:55

All of you are weird… t-shirt and undies all the way. Maybe a pair of sleep shorts if I’m staying somewhere other than home.

Same here!
A tshirt is basically a nightie without the riding up problem.
And clean underwear (changed again in the morning).

Q to the ones not wearing pants at night: does your DH do the same? I would hate that tbh.

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 16/12/2023 10:52

StarlightLady · 16/12/2023 06:05

What happens in an hotel that requires PJs?

Having known quite a few folk who've had to evacuate in the middle of the night for a fire alarm, I'd feel happier outside in PJ's than in my nightie.

Anonymouseposter · 16/12/2023 10:55

I find pyjamas very uncomfortable to sleep in. They seem to twist round my legs. Much prefer a big t shirt type plain nightie.

Perfectlystill · 16/12/2023 10:58

I don't wear pants at night and nor does my DH.

I think it's odd to wear pants in bed!

Choccyp1g · 16/12/2023 11:17

thanks to all the people suggesting long long sleeved nighties, the trouble is I an such a cheapskate ecowarrier, that my slightly inadequate ones have to be in rags before I can bear to replace them!

Anyway, the first recommendation has gone out of stock due to all the mumsnetters!

ChevyCamaro · 16/12/2023 11:23

Big fan of an old school long white cotton nightie here.
I dint think I have owned pyjamas since I was a child. I certainly wouldn't spend all day in a pair- I get dressed when I get up! (Ok sometimes in a pair of yoga pants but definitely not Snoopy "Pee-Jays", I'm depressed enough already!)

girlfriend44 · 16/12/2023 11:25

I like both. Agree that long sleeved ones are hard to find now.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/12/2023 11:27

I prefer pjs. Nighties usually end up around my waist in the night

margotrose · 16/12/2023 11:28

I'm the same - I could never wear pyjamas to bed, I find them so uncomfortable.

I wear an oversized t-shirt to bed and if I'm having a lazy day at home, I'll wear comfy normal clothes - leggings and a warm jumper or an oversized hoody.

TheGoogleMum · 16/12/2023 11:30

I like nighties! I sometimes wear pyjamas but usually I'm warm rather than cold at night. Often I sleep naked or just in underwear (usually underwear lately as I'm breastfeeding and if I don't have a breast pad on I leak on the other side whilst feeding baby)

justasking111 · 16/12/2023 11:38

Always worn nighties, cotton for coolness in the summer and winter can't bear synthetic. Then I've had a few sexy ones but they're not comfortable to sleep in.

The wedgie thing is true for me too.
