Am I the only person under 90 who prefers a nightie

to pyjamas?

MN is full of people who snuggle in their PJs, have a pyjama day, love them so much they long to spend the whole of Christmas Day in them.

But me ... I prefer a nightie. Anyone else?

Nighties are good in the summer, PJs in winter and for hotels.

What happens in an hotel that requires PJs?

I have been wearing floor length jersey maxi dresses to sleep in for years. Mine are from Dorothy Perkins and short sleeved. Unfortunately they don’t make them anymore and I’ve been buying them up on vinted and eBay. Exactly like this but floor length, which I much prefer, whereas this dress wouldn’t cover my ankles. DP used to do them in 3 lengths including petite and tall. https://www.next.co.uk/style/su134465/q65221#q65221

In winter, I tend to wear a dressing gown on top. I get mine from Long Tall Sally for the length.

Always wear a nightie. Never PJs

Hoglet70 · 16/12/2023 06:39

Another nightie person - the slip/chemise type.

Is it just me that thinks you need knickers under pyjama bottoms or you'd need a clean pair every day and who can be arsed with washing and ironing pyjamas every day!

I do but I can't sleep if I can feel the elastic on my knicker line so I've had to switch to women's boxers

RampantIvy · 16/12/2023 06:44

I have found my people. I don't understand the popularity of wearing pyjamas all day. Once I'm up I like to get dressed.

I find pyjamas too hot. I do have a pair for when I stay in cold houses but usually end up taking the trousers off in bed. My nighties are made from T-shirt material and most are giant T-shirts.

DorisFlies · 16/12/2023 06:46

I always wear nighties! I have a lovely White Company one but my everyday go to arecthe Lands End ones in plain colours - soft cotton, different lengths and short or long sleeves. They last for ages. Very comfy!

MinnieMountain · 16/12/2023 06:46

I take one to put on when going to the loo at night if I visit friends, as I sleep naked. Never actually wear one in bed.

Choccyp1g · 15/12/2023 23:43

Me too.
I sit up reading in bed, and find jamas give me a wedgie.
I wish I could find longer nighties and with long sleeves.

mens nightshirts on Amazon

muddyford · 16/12/2023 06:48

Monster T-shirt worn here. And like other posters I get dressed when I get up. I can't see the attraction of spending all day in my nightwear. Anyway, it would shock the locals, walking the dogs in my T-shirt and knickers.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 16/12/2023 06:53

@StarSparkleShine me too, and I’m currently wearing a Long Tall Sally brushed cotton nightshirt.
I do have pyjamas but rarely wear them.

TerfTalking · 16/12/2023 06:56

I love a big tshirt nightie. Not an ankle length Victorian one but a short sleeved cotton shortie.

I like bare legs in bed.

2Old2Tango · 16/12/2023 07:00

I'm 60 and have always worn nighties. Cotton ones in the summer and jersey ones in the winter. Hate wearing PJs as they make me too hot.

LizzieBennetsBonnet · 16/12/2023 07:34

I generally don't wear anything to bed in the spring/summer but when it's cold I love my long sleeved nightdress. Just bought myself a new one for Christmas! bonsoiroflondon.com/cdn/shop/products/Frenchpleatlongsleeve_SoftPink-1028-min.jpg?v=1676753441

I found long sleeved, longer length supima cotton nighties on Lands End. I've had them a few years, they have held both colour and shape. Very comfortable.

catin8oots · 16/12/2023 07:37

I love a nighty!

DS2 (13) loves them too. But he hides his if his mates are over

Nannyfannybanny · 16/12/2023 07:53

Our last house (1930s cottage) was freezing, even when we added central heating. It was brushed cotton nightshirts. Previous one,no central heating, I bought a kids fleecy sleep suit. I always wore PJ's, summer ones, shorts and strappy top. (clean pants) last year diagnosed with LS and peri anal eczema, told to only wear nightie,no pants. I am really restless, I find I have to sit up to turn over, otherwise they all twist up.cant wear anything Lacey because of the above, I get very hot (4.5 tog duvet,I like the window open,(DH tried to sneak it shut) Im in my 70s, hated the M and S ones, just got 3 knee length cotton ones. My older neighbours 80/90s wear PJ's.

Imaginethis · 16/12/2023 08:07

Wonderful! I’m in my seventies and have worn nighties since a teenager. I was beginning to think there were none of us left (nightdress wearers) and am very cheered by this thread. Long sleeved full length nightdresses are much more difficult to find - great to have links

Bonjovispjs · 16/12/2023 08:19

Not nighties, but nightshirts. I'm such a restless sleeper and toss and turn so much that pyjamas give me a wedgie and that definitely isn't comfortable 😅

Certainly not just you, but I don't - I don't leave marks, and I'm not sleeping with any other humans, so there are no potential, ah, leakages. I also don't fancy the idea of having something that close-fitting on in bed, having worn pants all day. I had quite enough of having to wear pants and pads overnight when I was menstruating. Gods I hated that!

VimtoVimto · 16/12/2023 08:21

I wear a nightie usually a cotton jersey one from M&S though I find the quality varies from season to season. I also tend to get dressed during the day and never understood people getting changed into pyjamas straight from work.

Catsmere · 16/12/2023 08:37

@VimtoVimto I used to get into PJs when I got home because that's when I'd shower, and I wasn't putting on fresh clothes for a couple of hours before bed.

Tumbleweed101 · 16/12/2023 08:45

I only sleep in underwear but have a nightie to hand if I need to get up in the night. I find clothing in bed uncomfortable where it twists and bunches up. If I do need to sleep in clothing because I’m away or sharing a hotel room with someone then I will choose a vest top and PJ shorts to keep me decent but minimise fabric.

livingthegoodlife · 16/12/2023 09:10

so hard to get long sleeve warm night dresses. i have previously had the adult polarn o pyret ones. i dont like grannie nighties!

primark is actually quite good for sleep t shirts.

Ploctopus · 16/12/2023 09:10

Love a nightie. Got into them while pregnant and have never looked back! Spent many a happy morning wafting around in a nightie.
