To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:41

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

Who breaks up? Are you a teacher? It's pretty daft to be annoyed by a calendar.

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/12/2023 18:42

Are you 5? Have you never noticed this phenomenon before?

Passingthethyme · 11/12/2023 18:43

I think it's great. Means you finish work on Friday and get the weekend to prepare/relax. Monday is the bets day imo

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/12/2023 18:44

Yes, I think you should complain. Ask for it to be moved to the weekend every year from now on.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/12/2023 18:44

It’s great! I’m dead pleased with the way that it tags onto a weekend so loads of people who work Monday- Friday (like me and DH) get 4 days off in a row, then a 3 day week.

ilovesooty · 11/12/2023 18:44

It's on a different day every year. Get over it.

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:45

I know it's irrational. It's never bothered me it being on a Monday before, probably because I used to work Christmas day before DD was born, but this year I'm really annoyed.

I thinks it's because I won't have time after pay day to get last minute gifts so will have to try to squeeze them all in this pay.

I love it being on Monday. It is more annoying when it's a weekend because all the days off in lieu means nothing opens for ages.

GreenSmithing · 11/12/2023 18:45

YANBU but as someone who is not a huge fan of Christmas, but quite likes the quiet bit afterwards where you eat lots of leftovers and catch up with people, I'm the other way around and looking forwards to getting the stressful part out of the way early.

OneMoreStepAlongTheRoadIGo · 11/12/2023 18:45

Er doesn't it being on a mo day mean you get extra days (Saturday and aunday) rather than finishing work a half say before( working Xmas eve)

Schools here break up a week before Christmas.

PastorCarrBonarra · 11/12/2023 18:46

Unless you’re a teacher or something like a barrister in the middle of a case, you can take annual leave on 21st and 22nd? Is that impossible in your role, however?

ANightingale · 11/12/2023 18:46

Celebrate it the following weekend instead?

PuttingDownRoots · 11/12/2023 18:46

It is slightly inconvenient on a Monday. Only 6hrs for everyone to do the last minute grocery shopping. I'm not looking to that...

(For full context... DH has an operation on the 22nd 200 miles away from home. So we are there 21st-23rd,cso only the 24th for shopping for vegetables etc.)

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 11/12/2023 18:46

Are you a teacher? I get the bank holidays only unless I can book more as annual leave. Quite normal to work on Christmas Eve.

My DC break up on the 15th and 20th (annoying as both in same LEA).

Londonrach1 · 11/12/2023 18:46

Yes but kinda works too

christmaspaws · 11/12/2023 18:46

I'm happy it means not working Christmas Eve! So I get 24/25/26 off then back to work on the 27th

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/12/2023 18:47

Eh? Break up from where? Are you a teacher?

Christmas being on a Monday means Monday-Friday workers get the weekend to get into the swing of it. When Christmas Day is any other day we just 'break up' on Christmas Eve and go straight in.

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:47

I have two weeks off over christmas so finish on Friday then have WC 25th off and WC 4th off.

I love the run up to Christmas, but hate the time inbetween Christmas and New year.

YABU to say ‘break up’. Children at school break up. Adults finish work, even teachers. And guess what, some people work up to and including Christmas Eve, so a Monday Christmas Day means they do actually get some breathing space. Is this your first working Christmas?

alwaysmovingforwards · 11/12/2023 18:47

YANBU and have every right to be annoyed, very annoyed in fact!
Suggest you pop outside, shout loudly and shake your fist at a passing cloud.

Then give your head a wobble..

Don’t you get december pay early.? I’m nhs…we get ours 21st ( usually it’s 26th)

Skyblue92 · 11/12/2023 18:49

I know exactly what you mean OP. The schools round me (including mine and my daughters) finish on the 22nd, normally it's the Friday before. (plus point is we go back the 8th rather than the 2nd)

Neither are all of us retail workers, for whom Christmas Eve is going to be INSANE, as the entire population tries to cram all its Christmas food shopping into Sunday hours... (actually I quite enjoy the frantic nature of it all and everyone tends to be jolly and more tolerant than for the other 364 days).

Mysterian · 11/12/2023 18:50

Think about Jesus, and all the other people with the misfortune to be born on Christmas Day.

TidalShore · 11/12/2023 18:51

Nah. This year is fine - 4 days off in a row. Next year is rubbish. Work 23rd & 24th, off 25th & 26th then in for one rubbish Friday before the weekend. Then new year on the Wednesday. Won't know if I'm coming or going!
