To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:41

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

@MadeOfAllWork i just checked hopefully and no, it’s the 8th…even more annoyed now haha.

I have two weeks off over christmas so finish on Friday then have WC 25th off and WC 4th off.

I love the run up to Christmas, but hate the time inbetween Christmas and New year.

So you have the whole of Christmas off? I'd say you're lucky! I have to go back on the 2nd before it's even over.

MadeOfAllWork · 11/12/2023 20:20

Who are all these people with children that don’t go back until the 8th? We break up on the 22nd and are back on the 4th.

Ours break up on the 21st & go back on the 4th but they have been known to go back as late as the 8th - 16 years ago to be precise as I'm still raging that I spent the 7th ironing uniforms only for the DDs to get the first day back after Christmas off due to the early arrival of DS.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/12/2023 20:24

I love the few days off we have together before Christmas, I feel robbed of it this year. Hate the time inbetween Christmas day and new year as have no routine, no idea what day it is and basically just go to pot

So have time together after Christmas. Make a routine. Plan things to do. You've got 2 weeks off work and you're complaining Xmas Confused

WickerMam · 11/12/2023 20:26

This is much better than last year. DC were at school all day on the 23rd last year, so straight into xmas eve. I spent all of last year moaning that we needed an extra day.

I spent the year before moaning that they were off for a full week before Xmas. So this year is perfect.

Autumn1990 · 11/12/2023 19:17

Traditionally the Christmas celebrations lasted 12 days until 6 th January. So if you look at the preindustrial Christmas traditions there’s loads you can do to spread the joy out.

Exactly, Christmas is not over after one day!

Nesbi · 11/12/2023 20:28

Totally agree with you OP. I’m taking 2 weeks off but because the schools are breaking up late Christmas is right at the start. I would much prefer to have it in the middle of my break as the run up to Christmas is the best bit!

Also…why do so many people seem constantly pissed off. Some really unnecessarily shirty replies on here!

Pipistrellus · 11/12/2023 20:39

If you only make plans for one day then why not change that this year. You could plan things to do for each day like Christmas crafts, baking, visiting.

It is slightly inconvenient on a Monday. Only 6hrs for everyone to do the last minute grocery shopping. I'm not looking to that...

(For full context... DH has an operation on the 22nd 200 miles away from home. So we are there 21st-23rd,cso only the 24th for shopping for vegetables etc.)

Only 6 hours for everyone to do last minute grocery shopping?? How do you come to the conclusion there is only 6 hours between Friday and Monday? Maybe for you but not everyone

ImAMinion · 11/12/2023 20:43

My teenage Saturday job was in retail, my hope was always that Christmas Day was any day but Sunday as Saturday was my contracted day and I didn’t want to work Christmas Eve! However one year of course I had to and actually it was quite a fun day - as a teen trying not to laugh at shopper’s last minute panic buying.

Then I went to zero hours at uni and often found myself being asked to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day and didn’t mind so much (oh I miss bank holiday double pay - the good old days)

Then as a working adult in nurseries - Christmas Day Monday was a dream! Best year when that happened - we were always open Christmas Eve then closed till the first working day of the new year - Monday Christmas meant no working Christmas Eve and the day off prior to really get in the holiday mood. Christmas Day on a Tuesday was horrible - having to just go in for the Monday Christmas Eve - urgh hated that.

At least you clearly work in a job where you always get the day off itself 😃

Maybe we should make Christmas a lunar holiday? 😇

pinkspeakers · 11/12/2023 20:44

I'm quite liking it being on a Monday. Two days off before hand without having any time off. Then a nice chilled week afterwards. I think Tuesday is arguably ideal, as would take Xmas Eve off on Monday, giving a three day run in and one day less afterwards. But Monday is pretty good.

Doggymummar · 11/12/2023 20:46

I finish on 19th till 8th January, it's bliss

pinkspeakers · 11/12/2023 20:46

The days between Xmas and New Year have always been my favourite. The most chilled time of the year! The days before Xmas, not so much!

I’m more annoyed that Christmas Eve is on a Sunday. Will Sunday hours still apply?

The shops will be opening an hour early for 'browsing', by which time a queue will have already formed.

Then at about 10 minutes before the tills open, all those people who've spent the last 50 minutes piling their trolleys high will descend on the tills, forming another massive queue.

The shops will be rammed until about 2/3 pm, when the normal shoppers will be replaced by the yellow sticker hunters hoping to get a turkey for a pound and bags of veg for a penny each.

I CBA with any of that so will go first thing Saturday morning, then stay away from the shops for at least a week.

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2023 20:51

Sunday trading will still stand on Christmas Eve
I applaud those retailers that are closing for two days over Christmas. They all should really

But then how will I get my emergency batteries.

Only joking, I agree, I think shops should close for a period over Christmas

Nothing opened up when I was a kid for two days at Christmas! ( maybe the newsagents on Boxing Day morning , but that was all)
We all survived.

everyone’s delighted this end because we usually have to work Christmas Eve. With xmas eve being a Sunday, this year we have four days off in a row without having to use any leave

yabvu

loreau · 11/12/2023 21:06

Next year it's marooned on a Wednesday. That will be far worse. Enjoy Monday while you can

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2023 21:08

Yeah, 2024 is a leap year
An extra day at work without any extra pay too
Wednesday is an even worse day to have Christmas! Lol

MamaDollyorJesus · 11/12/2023 19:56

@Kitkat1523 I work in payroll & it's a myth that everyone gets paid early for Christmas. I don't & I'd say about 60% of my clients with a 27-31 December pay date don't either unless a BH or weekend.

I on the other hand know anyone who doesn’t get paid early…but tbf most people I know work for nhs or local government

Yeah I am irrationally annoyed (and I know I’m being unreasonable!!) because it means that schools don’t go back until the 8th!!! Normally they are back on 2nd Jan. I start a new job on the 2nd and its a week we have to scrabble around and use leave/find childcare where usually they break up the week before Christmas where things are kind of winding down at work anyway, and DH normally has leave to use up. I know teachers need a holiday too - just to caveat before people jump down my throat!

My kids go back on the 3rd (guess it varies on area) as they do a half week to start with... It's a good way to ease back in... The 8th is a long wait, then in at the deep end! 😪

Bellyblueboy · 11/12/2023 21:13

I admit I have been a little thrown by Christmas Eve being on a Sunday.

I normally collect my marks order at 7am, then to the butcher and then swing by Tescos, back in The house by 9am.

this year I have to do it all on Saturday and I am now weirdly worried about sell by dates
