To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

Who are all these people with children that don’t go back until the 8th? We break up on the 22nd and are back on the 4th.

Schools here don’t break up until 22nd and go back on the 8th.

Mikimoto · 11/12/2023 21:16

I think, I THINK they've decided to hold it on a different day next year.

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2023 21:16

I'm sure the sell by dates will be ok for Monday / Tuesday etc
I hope so anyway!!
I intend to go out Saturday too

I actually work in health care, spent 15 years working Christmas day before DD. Now I take AL over Christmas to cover the two weeks that childcare is closed.

I love the few days off we have together before Christmas, I feel robbed of it this year. Hate the time inbetween Christmas day and new year as have no routine, no idea what day it is and basically just go to pot.

Do your childless and child free colleugues get their share of time off at Christmas?

wildernesssw · 11/12/2023 21:19

Quite right 😀it could be better organised, like Easter always being the Friday and Monday to make a long weekend!

laclochette · 11/12/2023 21:19

Our company is giving us the Friday off before Xmas as a "freebie" which is nice. It's funny how the day the holidays fall on changes the shape of the season tho, and fair enough to have a preference!

PS I love the bit in between Xmas and NY... It's one of my fave periods of the whole year! No sense of obligation to do anything, sheer relaxation. Appreciate I am lucky to get this tile off, however.

the80sweregreat · 11/12/2023 21:21

I love that limbo period between Christmas and new year too
It's nice to chill out with leftovers and have picky teas and not do much ( luckily I don't have to work)
It's nice

YABU to say ‘break up’. Children at school break up. Adults finish work, even teachers.

Meh, I'm a teacher and I 'break up' this Friday 💁‍♀️

I know it's irrational. It's never bothered me it being on a Monday before, probably because I used to work Christmas day before DD was born, but this year I'm really annoyed.

I thinks it's because I won't have time after pay day to get last minute gifts so will have to try to squeeze them all in this pay.

Haven't you heard of Amazon? How come you are leaving it so late?

tachetastic · 11/12/2023 21:30

Personally I find it really annoying when Christmas is on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday.

Anybody got other preferences???

GreyGoose1980 · 11/12/2023 21:31

Assume you’re a teacher OP as for most Mon - Fri workers having Christmas on a Monday means you are guaranteed not to have to work Xmas Eve and have more of a break beforehand.

13 weeks of school holiday a year and after lock-down I realise you deserve every one of them! God bless you!!!!

Doggymummar · 11/12/2023 21:32

Monday is the best day with the extra bank holidays I have 2 weeks off for three days leave

Luddite26 · 11/12/2023 21:33

I often wish it could just be on a Sunday like Easter and we would all know where we are so yanbu!

Luddite26 · 11/12/2023 21:37

I'm working 23rd and 24th till 6pm but I am very annoyed about the kids not breaking up till Friday. We haven't been able to book any festivities so are doing them after New Year. I suppose it will pep the most boring days of the year up a bit. I know this is totally first world thinking and I have been keeping it to myself for a while

theexceliconisgreen · 11/12/2023 21:39

This year is really good I think, I finish on Fri then have Sat/Sun to get organised and chill before Christmas on the Mon. Usually finish up on Christmas eve if it falls on a weekday which doesn't give you anytime to chill beforehand

goingback · 11/12/2023 21:41

crying at 2 weeks off, will happily trade my 8 pm Xmas eve finish, then 9 am start on boxing day.
if you hate the time off plenty of places looking for volunteers

Fanofbeasmith · 11/12/2023 21:46

YANBU

School doesn't finish until the 22nd and I'm also a bit cross about this. I'm off from the 20th but I'll be back at work on the 2nd or 3rd which is a week before school goes back. I'd rather we all had a week off or at least a good few days before Xmas

So would I but for us at least it’s the same every year, rarely break up before the 22nd or so.

it’s not the fault of Christmas being on a Monday!

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 11/12/2023 21:48

Well it’s a Wednesday next year which is much worse!

WimbyAce · 11/12/2023 21:48

Our schools break up on the 14th and go back on the 3rd so they have a nice week off before Christmas.
I am happy with a Monday as I don't work Fridays so get Fri and the weekend to relax before Christmas Day. Then am off work til the 2nd.

autienotnaughty · 11/12/2023 21:51

I agree and the children don't go back till the 8th!!!

Beezknees · 11/12/2023 21:52

I'm very bloody happy because it means I get to finish on the 22nd! I work in customer service and literally only get the bank holidays off, no one is allowed to book annual leave over that period as we have to be available for customers.

Beebopwasthebest · 11/12/2023 21:54

I'm psyching myself up. Veterinary emergency/out of hours role. all the day practices shut for 4 days whilst we cover, and two regular deliveries skipped so stock ordering is nightmare.

Keep doggies out of the chocolates and raisins folks pretty please😊❤️

Merry Christmas though xx

mybrainisfull · 11/12/2023 21:55

It's great for us! DH works in theatre, and often only get's one or sometimes two days off over Christmas. This year he's getting 3, yes THREE whole days off! So it's a very good year for us!
