To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

We break up (teacher) on the 22nd! No pre-Christmas time for the kids to do stuff apart from the weekends. But I like the time after Christmas to chill and we don't go back until the 9th!

User2856948 · 11/12/2023 18:52

It's better for us, DS is coming down Saturday instead of the usual rush on Christmas Eve after he finishes work if it's in the week so more relaxing.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 11/12/2023 18:56

I don't break up, I can opt to use my annual leave. In fact having a full weekend before Christmas Day is lovely. I can work up to 22nd, Saturday with step kids, travel on Sunday, perfect.

The only things you can do is start an online petition to move Christmas Day and contact the minister of important things.

YABU. Christmas is at least 12 days according to the song. Or 3 months if you believe the supermarkets.

Nah. This year is fine - 4 days off in a row. Next year is rubbish. Work 23rd & 24th, off 25th & 26th then in for one rubbish Friday before the weekend. Then new year on the Wednesday. Won't know if I'm coming or going!

Oh I just looked at next year and that's crap
2 days off for Christmas

rasellagirl · 11/12/2023 19:01

Glad I’m a HCP so no need to fret. I’m working 13 hour shift on Christmas Day and happy to do so.

AhBiscuits · 11/12/2023 19:01

It's great it being a Monday. It means I can spend Christmas eve with the children rather than fobbing them off on grandma while I work.

SocksAndTheCity · 11/12/2023 19:05

I like it for the same reasons as PP; I get four days off in a row and given that the Thursday and Friday aren't likely to be mad busy, I may even be able to take the whole of the week up until New Year. I got four days total last year.

This means a potential ten days off in a row (give or take the odd hour just checking messages and whatnot), and since I'm self employed and don't get holiday I'm pretty happy about that Xmas Smile

It is slightly inconvenient on a Monday. Only 6hrs for everyone to do the last minute grocery shopping. I'm not looking to that...

(For full context... DH has an operation on the 22nd 200 miles away from home. So we are there 21st-23rd,cso only the 24th for shopping for vegetables etc.)

If you buy veg fresh from a farm shop or something on the 20th they'll still be fine on 25th. I know it sounds a bit "extra" but for your one off circumstances it might help a bit?

Eleganz · 11/12/2023 19:11

Far better than a Christmas being on a Saturday where you have a full week to work and then no time to do the final preparations.

Grammarnut · 11/12/2023 19:12

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/12/2023 18:44

Yes, I think you should complain. Ask for it to be moved to the weekend every year from now on.

Turning Christmas into a movable feast will please everyone, I don't think. Employers complain enough about Easter and they managed to get rid of Whitsun, turning it into the Spring Bank Holiday. Bring back Whitsun, I say!

Grammarnut · 11/12/2023 19:14

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:58

How do I go about doing this??

Why do you want to change Christmas Day - it's a fixed feast (unlike Easter and the defunct Whitsun) so we always know when it is. I like it when Christmas is on a Saturday because we then get Monday and Tuesday as Public Holidays.

BotterMon · 11/12/2023 19:14

You have two weeks off and still you moan? Defo irrational.

Reminds me of an employee who joined a couple of years ago and asked in November when we broke up for Christmas and was shocked that we didn't - just Christmas and Boxing Day off like most people.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/12/2023 19:15

Christmas Day isn't until Monday.

Meowandthen · 11/12/2023 19:15

Are you unfamiliar with the Gregorian calendar?

I’m already fed up with Christmas-related drama everywhere, so much fuss for a few days, but this is something else.

Autumn1990 · 11/12/2023 19:17

Traditionally the Christmas celebrations lasted 12 days until 6 th January. So if you look at the preindustrial Christmas traditions there’s loads you can do to spread the joy out.

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/12/2023 19:17

The way Christmas 2024 falls is an absolute scam. Work on the 23rd and 24th, 2 days off, 1 day back in. Nonsense.

Good thing I'll be on Maternity really Wink

beautifuldaytosavelives · 11/12/2023 18:47

YABU to say ‘break up’. Children at school break up. Adults finish work, even teachers. And guess what, some people work up to and including Christmas Eve, so a Monday Christmas Day means they do actually get some breathing space. Is this your first working Christmas?

No, adults 'break up' too. It's an expression. Plenty of workplaces close for the Christmas period.

honeyandfizz · 11/12/2023 19:20

Be thankful you break up at all, many of us don't get the luxury of booking taking time off over Christmas.

Hayliebells · 11/12/2023 19:22

I don't understand how your pay is affected? Don't you get paid on the same day every month, so you're always paid the same number of days before Xmas?

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 11/12/2023 19:22

we all finish on the 22nd until the 8th of jan. But we celebrate the 12 days and end with a very small sticking on the 6th for the epiphany and also chalk the doors.

Brexile · 11/12/2023 19:22

I have no annual leave yet (newish job) only weekends and bank holidays - so a Monday Christmas is the only way of getting three consecutive days off and thus YABU. Also Boxing Day doesn't exist where I live, so I have to start at 7.15 on the 26th. 😥
