To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:41

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

I quite like it! Not having to rush back into work/school straight after!

Nanaof1 · 11/12/2023 19:51

I understand what you are saying OP. For me, I always liked the middle of the week Christmases, because my kids had more time off school and got to enjoy the winter holiday time. My favorite was when Christmas was on Wednesday or sometimes Thursday. Then the kids were off after the Friday before Christmas and usually were off until after the weekend following NYD. Basically 10 days plus the 6 weekend days. Made it fun for me. My DH almost always worked Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, etc. including NYE and NYD. He was swing shift and had a job in a sector that never shut down, no matter what. So, for me, it was fun having my kids around, their friends around and getting to go do a few things with the long holiday. The kids seemed to get the shortest holiday vacation when Christmas fell on a Fri-Mon. I realize that I was lucky being able to be a SAHM for most of their childhood and when I worked, it was harder when needing childcare, etc. I still enjoyed the extra time since I was on the 24/48 shift when I worked.

But, everyone has their favorites. I just think it's a bit silly for people to castigate you for having an opinion. It just shows more of that "living to be offended" style of life that has seemed to grow in popularity. I am also aware that schools have tightened up the vacation time for winter holiday and seem to give the kids the least time off they can.

Fionaville · 11/12/2023 19:51

I actually think it's better. If you work Mon-Fri, at least you've got the weekend off with no holidays needed. Most places you have to book Xmas eve off, so it's the best case scenario having two days off before Christmas day!

MasterBeth · 11/12/2023 19:55

Oh no! Your two weeks off over Christmas are at sub-optimal time for you? Thoughts and prayers, OP.

MamaDollyorJesus · 11/12/2023 19:56

@Kitkat1523 I work in payroll & it's a myth that everyone gets paid early for Christmas. I don't & I'd say about 60% of my clients with a 27-31 December pay date don't either unless a BH or weekend.

BashfulClam · 11/12/2023 20:02

I’ve never finished up the Friday before and usually work on Christmas Eve. This year I can get loads more done as I have Christmas Eve off and the day before it. Also no Sunday trading laws here in Scotland so shops will be manic on the Saturday and Sunday.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 11/12/2023 20:03

Sorry op I am struggling to feel sympathy for your 2 weeks holiday falling at an inconvenient time. I work in a supermarket, we all work our normal days unless one of those days falls on Christmas Day then we have to work another day that we usually have off to make up or book Christmas Day as holiday. If we refuse to use our annual leave this way then we have the option of going in on Christmas day and cleaning.

Bagpuss2022 · 11/12/2023 20:04

I’m not that fussed I’m annoyed my DD school doesn’t break up till the 22nd what a pain!

Nanaof1 · 11/12/2023 20:05

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:58

How do I go about doing this??

I love the fact that you have kept your sense of humor amongst the "precious" and "offended by other people breathing" posters.

Just remember, "Like assholes, everyone has an opinion. It's just that some opinions are opined by assholes". shrug 😉🌲

Sunnydays41 · 11/12/2023 20:05

I almost wish our school broke up on 22 Dec or at least one day that week. DC finish on Friday 15 Dec, so we will have 10 days of craziness before Christmas Day.

Meowandthen · 11/12/2023 20:07

Next people will be complaining that Christmas is in December when it’s too cold.

Meowandthen · 11/12/2023 20:09

Smugandproud · 11/12/2023 19:24

I’m more annoyed that Christmas Eve is on a Sunday. Will Sunday hours still apply?

Yes and I imagine people in retail are happy about that.

ManchesterLu · 11/12/2023 20:09

Days of the week mean nothing from about Dec 22nd until Jan 3rd so it really doesn't matter.

Watchingstick · 11/12/2023 20:11

Yeah I am irrationally annoyed (and I know I’m being unreasonable!!) because it means that schools don’t go back until the 8th!!! Normally they are back on 2nd Jan. I start a new job on the 2nd and its a week we have to scrabble around and use leave/find childcare where usually they break up the week before Christmas where things are kind of winding down at work anyway, and DH normally has leave to use up. I know teachers need a holiday too - just to caveat before people jump down my throat!

I think you have a point.

Maybe I'm not annoyed it's Monday but that the children break up so late

Are you a teacher? I don’t understand why you’re saying “break up for Christmas”?? Surely you just take more annual leave.

Now this is a whole other thread

OP posts:
Watchingstick · 11/12/2023 20:15

@ActDottie was that aimed at me? By ‘break up’ I mean that’s when schools close for Xmas. I’m not a teacher hence having to find childcare for 2-5th as kids don’t go back until the 8th

Behindyouiam · 11/12/2023 20:15

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:45

I know it's irrational. It's never bothered me it being on a Monday before, probably because I used to work Christmas day before DD was born, but this year I'm really annoyed.

I thinks it's because I won't have time after pay day to get last minute gifts so will have to try to squeeze them all in this pay.

Oh poor you...my thoughts are with you.

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 20:16

I actually work in health care, spent 15 years working Christmas day before DD. Now I take AL over Christmas to cover the two weeks that childcare is closed.

I love the few days off we have together before Christmas, I feel robbed of it this year. Hate the time inbetween Christmas day and new year as have no routine, no idea what day it is and basically just go to pot.

OP posts:
Pamcakey · 11/12/2023 20:18

Meh I’m working until 8pm Christmas Eve. Thems the breaks. I’m lucky to be off for Christmas

HandyLittleGadget · 11/12/2023 20:18

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/12/2023 18:44

Yes, I think you should complain. Ask for it to be moved to the weekend every year from now on.

😂😂

Iwasafool · 11/12/2023 20:19

You reminded me of my late mum. She used to think it was scandalous that she was expected to cook a roast two days in a row. I could never convince her that a roast wasn't compulsory any Sunday let alone the 24th December.

MadeOfAllWork · 11/12/2023 20:20

Who are all these people with children that don’t go back until the 8th? We break up on the 22nd and are back on the 4th.

InWalksBarberalla · 11/12/2023 20:20

For us Monday is the best day for Christmas - weekend to prepare.
