To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

I’m happy that Christmas is on a Monday this year. My children break up on Friday 15th, I have next week off as annual leave and because of the bank holidays and my non working day I’m not due back until the 28th Dec.
Next year will be completely different due to school break up dates and Christmas Eve falling on a week day.

Magicmama92 · 13/12/2023 09:29

Guess we should change the day just to keep you happy 🙄
How old are you? It's not some new phenomenon it changes day every year.

I have two weeks off over christmas so finish on Friday then have WC 25th off and WC 4th off.

I love the run up to Christmas, but hate the time inbetween Christmas and New year.

honestly you are so lucky- you said you have two weeks off over Christmas
I work for the NHS we get 25th and 26th off thats it.
I understand that its annoying buying gifts with Novembers money as there is not much time to do this with Decembers money.

But really count your blessings ( at least you can afford to do this, some cannot)

As someone who used to work Christmas Day you should know that finishing work on Friday makes you bloody lucky! Many are working right up to or on Christmas, including those with children. Completely unreasonable to moan when you have time off

It's your fault if you didn't book annual leave like the OP, if you can't book it then you'll be off next year won't you as you've gone your turn this year and if you STILL work every Christmas, find a different job if it bothers you that much

You do know there's some jobs where "just booking the leave" isn't possible right? And that "taking turns" isn't always a thing? 24 hour 7 day a week services need to be staffed.

As I'm a carer and my husband is a nurse, yes I do understand actually. That's when you take the third option I gave you 👍

I’m more annoyed that Christmas Eve is on a Sunday. Will Sunday hours still apply?

Let's hope Sunday hours still apply so that those that are working can get home and spend it with their family before they are called back in on Boxing day

Flopsyl didn’t say that they are even working at Christmas. Perhaps Flopsyl just has some sympathy for other people and can imagine their varied situations, something you clearly lack.

Also, it’s the OP who is ‘bothered’, the one who has booked the annual leave as you suggest we all do, and is still complaining. That was Flopsyj’s point, clearly.

My husband is working Christmas, and I'm working new year, that's life and part of the careers we CHOOSE to do. If I didn't want to work those times I'd find a job that closes down for the holiday period. I'm not lacking anything 😂

Do you not get AL?

Sorry op I do agree. Not allowed to use annual leave during November or December.
I'm working until 10pm Christmas eve. Off Christmas day, in for 6am boxing day.
Same hours over new years as well.
I missed my old job where the office shut down for 3 days

Iateallllllthepies · 13/12/2023 12:06

I know what you mean.

Dd breaks up from school friday 22nd. Seems like no time to enjoy the pre Christmas things, which is the best part for me. We are celebrating Christmas on xmas eve this year due to circumstances as well.

GallowwayGirl88 · 13/12/2023 12:23

You work in healthCare and are able to take two week’s annual leave over Christmas? That’s what practically unheard of. Stop moaning and grow up.

Longleggedgiraffe · 13/12/2023 12:29

YABU. Its really over the top to be annoyed over something you've known forever. Everyone knows when Christmas is. A lot of people wish the days had worked better for them, but that's life. There's nothing nothing you can do about it. Find something worthy of your annoyance that you CAN change instead of expending your energy on what you CAN'T.

Duechristmas · 13/12/2023 17:32

You're going back later though. I finish Friday and we're back on 2nd. Swings and roundabouts. I prefer to finish earlier as it's my daughter's birthday before Christmas and everybody's on a diet and a bit flat after Christmas but either way we're lucky to get some time off compared with retail for example. I don't compare with NHS as that's what my husband does and he definitely works less hours over the year than teachers, but neither are hard done by.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/12/2023 17:40

I am sitting here simply amazed that someone finds fault with a calendar they have lived with their entire life.

dhfoody47 · 13/12/2023 17:46

😂😂😂

Toomanykids1 · 13/12/2023 17:47

Think you maybe need to think over your anger related to it. My hubbys work are open right up to 5.30pm Xmas eve and back open 8.30am on the 27th and new year he’s only off the 1st. I know we’re lucky in that we at least have some leave Xmas and new year unlike hospital and emergency workers.

Talipesmum · 13/12/2023 17:58

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/12/2023 07:28

Must be your school/area, our schools break up on the 15th, so a week before xmas and a week after and back to school on the 2nd.

So maybe aik your anger at your school/local authority who have chosen those term dates

Ours too. All finishing on Friday. So a whole week of buildup. Guessing next year it’ll shift over.

AlFrMi · 13/12/2023 17:59

Some of us work in jobs where we routinely work over Christmas and New Year, so yes, get over it! At least you have some time off over Christmas!

Snowflakeslayer · 13/12/2023 17:59

So book a few days off before or after, simple. It’s not exactly a surprise! ;))

Tiiredofthiss · 13/12/2023 18:01

What about when Christmas is on a Saturday or a Sunday? That gives even less time for last minute prep if you finish work the Friday before Christmas.
Plenty of people work right through, you're very lucky to get the time off at all, so sorry but YABU by complaining about this.
I've never worked anywhere where I get more than a couple of days off for Xmas personally, so it landing on a Monday means I get 4 days off (Saturday - Tuesday), I'm very pleased about this.

Luckyduc · 13/12/2023 18:11

You had 12 months of the year to buy Christmas presents for your kid...why leave it until last minute and complain you need to take it off the one pay. Go shopping on Saturday and Sunday if it's that much of an issue but there's a whole load of us who have kids and have to work all weekend, Christmas eve finish at 7pm and back to work boxing day! You have it lucky

YANBU and have every right to be annoyed, very annoyed in fact!
Suggest you pop outside, shout loudly and shake your fist at a passing cloud.

Then give your head a wobble..

🤣🤣🤣

This has to be right up there as the silliest thing I’ve ever heard 🤣 how can you be so annoyed at getting a full 4 days off work?
