To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

I quite like Christmas being on the Monday in principle - as others have said, a weekend to enjoy before the day - but our idiot LA seems to have used it as a weird opportunity to have the longest autumn term in history and break up on the 22nd, meaning the kids are (a) knackered and (b) have less time and opportunity for the lovely festive pre-Christmas stuff but get extra of the annoying, empty post-Christmas but which this year will drag on until the 8th of January....

And then only five weeks until February half term!

Smugandproud · 11/12/2023 19:24

I’m more annoyed that Christmas Eve is on a Sunday. Will Sunday hours still apply?

doitwithlove · 11/12/2023 19:24

@Outandabout43 - Try working in the health & social care - there is NO CHRISTMAS day for these workers 👎🏼

The day Christmas falls on changes every year. You take the ups and the downs. You are being unreasonable to be annoyed with the calendar.

Instead, feel sorry for me. I work in France where, with a couple of exceptions (e.g. Easter Monday), public holidays have a date and they are recognised on that date irrespective of what day it is. None of this "bank holiday Monday" stuff like in the UK. So when both 1 May and 8 May (which are public holidays) both fall on a weekend, those holidays are recognised on the Saturday or Sunday with no day off work at all.

Don't know you're born!!!! 😫😫😫

It’s the best as you could be working on Christmas Eve as it’s a working day.
Not forgetting all the doctors, nurses, fire and ambulance working on Christmas Day!!!!

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:47

I have two weeks off over christmas so finish on Friday then have WC 25th off and WC 4th off.

I love the run up to Christmas, but hate the time inbetween Christmas and New year.

Life is so hard.

Viviennemary · 11/12/2023 19:30

Take an extra day or two holiday. You've got two full days off before Christmas day unless you work at the weekend. Cart really see what you've got to complain about.

Xmasblues · 11/12/2023 19:31

I’m happy because I only work Monday-Friday and we’ve all got Xmas day off.

If it was on a weekend I wouldn’t get the extra day off.

capricorn12 · 11/12/2023 19:33

You wouldn't like working in retail...I'll be working all week including 23rd and Christmas Eve even though it's my birthday.

Just1MoreMinute · 11/12/2023 19:34

I think you should make a complaint, in writing, to whoever made Xmas day land on a Monday. Make sure you stomp your foot when you post it.

CeeJay81 · 11/12/2023 19:35

I work in a supermarket, so I'm wondering if 23rd will be extra busy!!😮🧟‍♂️ with Xmas eve being on a Sunday. I doubt anyone will leave it till then to shop? Oh the joys, I get a whole 2 days off work lol.

Youremylobster87 · 11/12/2023 19:35

I don't understand the logic behind this post (unless you're a teacher?)

Monday is the BEST day for Christmas for weekday workers, means the weekend is tagged before so plenty of time for shopping.

CoatOfArms · 11/12/2023 19:39

It's annoying me too. I only have one left at school but his last day is Friday 22nd. Weekend and straight into Christmas day.

He's not back until Monday 8th Jan which is a pain - that week after New Year is just so nothing-y. Would be better finishing up 20th and back on the 3rd.

Are you 5? Have you never noticed this phenomenon before?

Innit 😂

nettie434 · 11/12/2023 19:42

I did vote YABU because there's nothing you can do about it but I do get the frustrations. We get paid a few days early but I know not all employers do this. We can also take additional leave but, once again, this isn't an option for everyone (e.g people in emergency services). Some shop owners who close on Monday don't give the additional bank holiday, though they are meant to. Christmas arrangements do vary and it must be frustrating if you don't get to benefit.

tkwal · 11/12/2023 19:43

Use frozen sprouts and spiced red cabbage , carrots , parsnip and potatoes have a longer shelf life if stored correctly. Grapes and other fruits are a different matter

Bobthethird · 11/12/2023 19:43

im with you op. its SO long until the kids go back because they break up so late. I'm going to have to parent them for a whole week whilst hubby just swans off to work with the excess chocolates and i'm mediating war between 4 year olds who can't remember who got the green dinosaur and who got the red one but who both want the green one.

Couldn't have just held on a few days eh Mary?

TeenLifeMum · 11/12/2023 19:46

This year is annoying me too @Outandabout43 I work and am working between Christmas and new year but I like the dc to have a week home to chill, recover from the term and enjoy the pre Christmas fun. Feels like that’s stolen this year. I’ve never known them not to break up the Friday a week before - dc are 12-16 so we’ve have a few Christmas holidays under our belts.

How can you be annoyed when you get all that time off? I have to work 27/28/29. Kids don't break up until 22nd

Grammarnut · 11/12/2023 19:14

Why do you want to change Christmas Day - it's a fixed feast (unlike Easter and the defunct Whitsun) so we always know when it is. I like it when Christmas is on a Saturday because we then get Monday and Tuesday as Public Holidays.

I think op was joking

you gotta blame your parents for that one, not op! Altho i have a similar issue and didn't learn my lesson, did i my Christmas babies?

TiredandLate · 11/12/2023 19:48

I've had two '9-5' jobs over the last 7 years and both closed for Christmas, this year it's 22nd-4th Jan. Before that I worked in pubs and restaurants and loved the Christmas shifts, loads of tips back in the good old days of cash bars.

Birdcar · 11/12/2023 19:48

I think that Christmas being on a Monday isn't the real cause of your annoyance. It's just what you're blaming on.

Smugandproud · 11/12/2023 19:24

Some shops close early on Christmas eve every year anyway so it doesn't make much difference really

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/12/2023 18:44

It’s great! I’m dead pleased with the way that it tags onto a weekend so loads of people who work Monday- Friday (like me and DH) get 4 days off in a row, then a 3 day week.

Edited

Me too! Half day on Friday 22nd then that's me until 3rd January (using annual leave) but by then I'll be fed up & desperate to get back to work.

Shame the next 2 weeks will be manic at work & home though.
