To be annoyed Christmas is on a Monday

Outandabout43 · 11/12/2023 18:41

I'm feeling very irrationally annoyed at Christmas being on a Monday this year. Normally you break up on the Friday the week prior to Christmas and have a few days getting into the Christmas spirit, doing Christmas activities and getting the last bits ready.

This year I break up on the Friday and then BAM Christmas day and it's all over.

AIBU to be really annoyed about this?

This has to be right up there as the silliest thing I’ve ever heard 🤣 how can you be so annoyed at getting a full 4 days off work?

I get 2 weeks off, and I'm still irritated by the timings this year Grin. I wouldn't have started a thread to say so though - I would quite rightly have been flamed!

Bertiesmum3 · 13/12/2023 09:10

you are being very unreasonable!!!

At least you’re having time off, millions of workers are working all over Christmas and New Year!!

People on this site really do find the most absurd things to whine about, don't they? From this thread to the one about the teacher demanding that a child take a test (which had all the bedwetting hypochondriacs out in force) People (rightly) blame the government for the bad state the country is in, but sometimes I think that ordinary people are a bit fucking useless as well.

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/12/2023 18:50

hey I'll swap you , and you can go into work early on Boxing Day instead of me.
Only on MN do you read stuff like this!!!

gabsdot45 · 13/12/2023 19:01

Monday is better than Saturday. I'd have to either work Christmas Eve or take annual leave to cover it.

noodlebugz · 13/12/2023 19:13

I think you’re right - it does feel like a short run up to the day itself without much time for fun stuff earlier it is rude.

To make you feel better since you worked in healthcare - nights into christmas day is equally rude! 😂

I guess it’s reframing the days between christmas and new you that you hate - having a day for finishing the snacks with hot choc and a movie, going for a wander (weather permitting), finding solidarity at soft play or wherever with other parents when being cooped up becomes too much. Embrace the what day is it again / plan stuff in - we are seeing another family on 30th.

But most to reiterate - I DO get it and it is RUDE! x

blackfluffycat · 13/12/2023 19:17

DDs have broken up on 16-18 dec for years now

Vonesk · 12/12/2023 23:45

You are not being unreasonable, what you have highlighted is that certain people in families ' provide ' Christmas for others ; they COOK, GET GIFTS, DECORATE THE HOUSE, MAKE ARRANGEMENTS ,GET EVERYTHING ORGANISED and In. This process lose themselves in looking after others, it's just all sheer hard work!!!!!!!!!

It’s also optional, despite your shouty caps.

You won’t be shot if you don’t make a rod for your own back and play the martyr. 🙄

Missingpop · 13/12/2023 19:21

Ffs 🤦‍♀️ What day of the week would you like it to be on ? Perhaps we could all club together next year & change all of the world calendars just to suit you!!
the only other thing I can suggest is change career perhaps become a teacher you’d get two weeks off for Christmas

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 13/12/2023 19:57

What is brilliant about CD being on a Monday is that all the 2024 diaries and calendars also start on a Monday.

I find that weirdly satisfying, no odd days at the start of my diary, straight into a double page spread.

mooncatgrover · 13/12/2023 20:01

Oh no!!! It’s terrible! You poor dear. Are you ok hun?. You get a whole weekend off. Then Xmas day. Get over it

CasperGutman · 13/12/2023 20:18

I'm really loving the timing of Christmas - and the school holidays - this year. The kids stay in school until a couple of days before, being excited and doing fun festive things with their friends. I get a couple of days off to prepare myself for Christmas, whereas most years I'd be in work on Christmas Eve, and then at the start of next term their school has an inset day so we can have a full seven days together from 1st-8th Jan. I'm eyeing up late deals on holidays....

Bernardo1 · 13/12/2023 20:30

Its the Calender dear, get over it.

Don't think there's time to petition the U.N. Security Council to change it.

3luckystars · 13/12/2023 20:33

I don’t blame you, I’d be furious too.

LovelyIssues · 13/12/2023 21:58

I work in a school and I agree OP, we break up Friday 22nd! Seems so lately, we normally have a much longer build up to Christmas to get organised and do activities.

SquirrelySponges · 13/12/2023 22:20

Some of us work shifts and have to work Christmas day and Boxing day and new year too. YABU!

Rockfordpeach · 13/12/2023 22:32

I'm happy. This is the first time in years DP will not be working Xmas eve because it falls on a Sunday so he actually gets a break before Christmas day instead of working til late the day before

Ilovecleaning · 13/12/2023 22:41

Your question did make me smile… but I kind of get it.
maybe this is obvious advice but get a few things in your freezer between now and Christmas:

  • make gravy (Jamie O’s Get Ahead Gravy is good)
  • make stuffing
  • prep and blanch carrots & sprouts
  • freeze half cooked roast potatoes
Cuts down the work on Christmas Day tremendously. Or, buy it all from M&S ! 🤣

Passingthethyme · 11/12/2023 18:43

I think it's great. Means you finish work on Friday and get the weekend to prepare/relax. Monday is the bets day imo

Yep, I've only had to take a couple of days annual leave and I've got a week off. I can't wait.

Notsurehwhattdo · 13/12/2023 23:11

I'll be WFH on the Thursday and Friday beforehand... It's already been said that there won't be much (anything) going on. I'm then off for the week as the office is shut. Considered taking more time off the following week, but I'd say I'll be ready to go back by then after all that time with young, crazy, children! :-)

JenJuni · 14/12/2023 14:32

I think mathematically speaking you are being unreasonable as there’s almost a 50% chance it’ll be the Saturday, Sunday or Monday. However it is cold and the world is both depressing and irritating at the moment so I do defend your right to be irrationally annoyed.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 14/12/2023 18:53

deplorabelle · 13/12/2023 08:22

As a church choir member, Monday Christmas is a bit of a nightmare because it means the carol service is bang on Christmas instead of having a gap and Christmas Eve is triple church. Plus the Christmas Eve service will be crowded beyond belief because fewer people will be working.

Tuesday Christmas is the worst because normal Christmas prep can't be done on the sunday because so we'll end up making 250 Christingles on the morning of Christmas Eve instead.

My husband is an organist with a small church choir. Busy, busy, busy!

Me too ! My Christmas is on Saturday this year as I'm on a 12 hour late shift both Christmas Day and Boxing Day . At least if I've forgotten anything I can send someone out to get it

yamyam1978 · 14/12/2023 20:18

I've read it all now (pain when it's on Tues - Thurs cause you don't know where you are) ... xmas should be Sun/Mon ideally so you know what day it is for rest of the week !
