To agree with Nigel Farage?

nds241 · 11/12/2023 09:12

I expect to be completely flamed here!

But I find myself agreeing with him. I've been watching TV this morning and have seen him do a couple of interviews following his exit from the jungle.

I voted Remain back in 2016 and have always voted Labour. So in the past I've obviously had very different political views from him m, but everything he said this morning about a population crisis, there being no real leader of the opposition and the Conservative Party being in a complete shambles made sense. I think he does speak a lot of what maybe others would be afraid to say. I honestly feel confused as to why I find myself agreeing with him.

Tell me I'm being unreasonable!

You're not unreasonable, everyone is a mixture and Nigel Farage is no exception. In many respects he's a decent enough bloke, he was great in the jungle but vote for him? Never.

He's not a decent enough bloke. He's the main agent for rehabilitating racism and nationalism in the UK as something acceptable in mainstream discourse. He's an absolute louse of a man.

Quite separately from his political views, Farage always comes over to me as vaguely sleazy - someone you would never risk being alone with. It may be unmerited, but those are the vibes he gives out.

Not safe in taxis as they used to say!

Someone put it like this: if you support a racist, it doesn't automatically mean you're a racist, but you're saying racism isn't a deal-breaker for you.

This.

The number coming over in small boats is insignificant. The government allows hundreds of thousands to come here legally every year. Legal migration figures are huge. And the Rwanda deal is nonsense...no one will ever get sent there and if they did, it's only for a couple of hundred people and they've spent £150 million on it and counting. The amount of taxpayers money being wasted is an absolute scandal.

To say nothing of the fact that the deal allows Rwanda citizens entry to the UK, so the effect on net migration will effectively be zero at best.

I think you've hit part of the nail on the head. The left are SO loud and disparaging of anyone who is politically moderate/central and slightly right of centre (so the vast majority of the British public) they're pushing people ever further right to feel like they are being heard.

Are they? I regularly hear the left giving due respect to people like Major, Clarke, Rudd, Stewart, even Gove. They're certainly disparaging about the likes of Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Sunak, Truss, but that's hardly surprising.

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 19:12

et’s be honest, they are never going to be enticed to thinking differently. Like most folk they stick to their echo chambers and read stuff that mirrors their beliefs. It’s like people cannot be challenged about being racist as god forbid it might hurt their feelings. It’s how we ended up with Brexit.
The one constant in mn is the angry Left wingers. Anyway who disagrees with them, or who admits a degree of nuance is racist/thick.
And you only have to see the times that Civil Servants have briefed against their own MPs to know that they have their own agenda.

Christ, what I’d give for a government that included Major, Clarke, Heseltine, Rudd and Stewart. I could almost be convinced to vote for it.

A Damascene conversion. Well, well. Yes, YABU.

I would love to have seen him win, just to see certain people implode.

I take it this refers to winning "I'm a Celebrity"? I've seen his supporters banging on on other social media about how everyone must vote for him because it'll make the left wing's heads explode, yet I've seen very little from left-wingers about it. I really don't think the left gave a stuff about whether he "won" a minor TV competition, because the reality is that no-one cares.

Farage supporters seem great at constructing elaborate fantasies about what the left do or do not get worked up about. I think it's their own way of masking the reality of their hero's feet of clay.

Again, where is all this anger? Mostly the attitude I see on the threads criticising, say, the current government is a sort of resigned amusement. Yes, people will get angry about outright cruelty and things like the Prime Minister lying and the exploitation of the most vulnerable members of society, but that fortunately isn't confined to the left.

AutumnCrow · 11/12/2023 19:34

I'm personally sick to the back teeth of being told what's wrong with my perception of privileged middle class white men.

Halfemptyhalfling

Brexit has caused the small boats problem

In what way?

Brexit has led to loss of financial industry and less clout for the UK

London is ranked 2nd globally after New York:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/270228/top-financial-centers-on-the-global-financial-centres-index/
https://www.longfinance.net/publications/long-finance-reports/the-global-financial-centres-index-34/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Financial_Centres_Index

Could argue that Putin wouldn't have dared invade Ukraine if Brexit hadn't weakened UK and EU

More likely down to the US withdrawing from Afghanistan and Biden waiving sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in 2021;

Oh come on, I think you're being a bit disingenuous. It's standard for a certain set of posters to abuse those who don't agree with them with a very free use of racist/idiot etc.
You know that.
And I don't support or respect nf in any way. But I do think it shows that the Left have to buck up and present a palatable vision that people can support.

I spend far too much time here on political threads and I don’t recognise that at all. In fact a Tory voter recently spent an entire afternoon accusing me of racism.

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 19:55

Hang on, in this thread alone posters have played the racism/idiot card. Haven't you seen that?

BIossomtoes · 11/12/2023 19:56

Well, to be fair, it is about Farage!

Go back a couple of pages and see the full on rant from a PP. That's just one example. I too spend more time on politics threads than I'd care to admit to and see it time and again. Interestingly a lot of it is levied at people like me who offer a neutral view. You're not allowed to be neutral or moderate on here, it's so partisan!

Yeah the swivel-eyed right wing posters love to call people who might feel everything hasn't been rosy for the last few years "angry" - as if it was a crime.

Everyone who knew Hitler reports how kind and caring he was to their families. He loved animals so much he was a vegetarian.

This sort of person is charm itself to the people in their circle/they want to influence. To the people they hate they are monsters. Everyone's a mixture all right.

You think “swivel eyed” is anything but an insult? I can hardly score a home goal when I’m one of the Tory posters’ most vociferous annoyances! I hate seeing them handed ammunition.
