Skipping the Que

Now that I am calmer, I think perhaps I may have been a jerk but I was so annoyed earlier.

I was catching the train to work with about 20 minutes to spare. I stopped off at the deli near the trainstation (also petrol station), Sunday morning close to Xmas, the que was longer than usual and the staff were slow enough.

This lady skipped the que and approached the men at the top and asked if she could stand in, as she was in a hurry as she had a baby in the car.

I was annoyed but whatever. She then did the same thing in the que to pay.

She left the shop and while I was in the que to pay, and by now, barely going to make my train due to the slow deli, she came back in, picked up a bottle of water and approached the man at the top of the que.

I was second in the que, she had the same story. “Sorry is it ok to jump in, I just have a baby in the car”.

he said it was ok. It was not ok with me. I piped up and told her no it wasn’t okay, everyone’s got places to be and I’m in a hurry too, she’s after skipping twice and wants to skip the third time? Get to the back of the que and wait your turn.

she started yelling I was very rude, very rude indeed, turned to the sales assistant saying how rude I was and the sales assistant served her.

the man who let her go ahead of him also let me go ahead of him.

I didn’t complain to the sales assistant but I called the shop immediately after I got on the train, complained to the manager and he called me back there tonight to say he watched the cctv back and he is after reprimanding the assistant in question.

Well I agree that cutting in front of someone in the queue affects everyone, not just the person at the front. But I think calling the shop afterwards was overkill

Why would the sales assistant be reprimanded for this? Yes, they probably should have made her queue but if the people at the front said it was ok, they don’t really have a leg to stand on.

Yes, frustrating and she sounds like a CF and a terrible parent if she’s left her baby alone.

It does sound annoying and I see why you said what you said.

what did you do when the same man let you go in front of him? Surely you can’t have taken him up on that offer, as that might have inconvenienced some of the other customers even further. If you skipped the queue too, I’m afraid you’re just as bad as the other woman!

You also jumped the queue though because the man who let her go in front let you go as well, so can't see what the problem is.

Queue. Yes it's annoying and she was entitled, but there's no point carrying it on now.

Fair point but I saw it as I was 2nd in the que. If he wanted to forfeit his place in the que for her, that’s his problem. I was 2nd, so I stayed second…

Nah that is annoying to be fair. Not the same re OP skipping man at the front because they’re behind the same number of people it doesn’t matter which one goes first. Letting her jump in means an extra person to queue behind.

It was mean to call the shop as the only reason for doing so was to get the assistant in trouble
YANBU to be annoyed by the woman but YABU to have complained. The assistant was probably just trying to get rid of her to avoid an argument escalating between customers.

Sounds like OP was 2nd in queue so the bloke first in the queue letting OP go first doesn’t slow anyone else down. The woman bypassed the whole queue and only checked with 1 person in the queue it was ok to cut in

The lady que skipping is unreasonable but you are also unreasonable for calling the shop and getting the shop assistant in trouble. Probably thought they were doing a nice thing as well

No it’s not a nice thing. Not when they are subjecting everyone in the queue to a longer wait, twice. They also imply by their actions that the OP was unreasonable to protest it the second time. Fuck that.

How annoying and you were right to complain!

Some people have been politely using the word queue rather than directly pointing out that you have made a mistake. But you don’t seem to have noticed and you have repeated
the mistake (que). I am direct, like you. It’s queue, not que.
