Skipping the Que

Now that I am calmer, I think perhaps I may have been a jerk but I was so annoyed earlier.

I was catching the train to work with about 20 minutes to spare. I stopped off at the deli near the trainstation (also petrol station), Sunday morning close to Xmas, the que was longer than usual and the staff were slow enough.

This lady skipped the que and approached the men at the top and asked if she could stand in, as she was in a hurry as she had a baby in the car.

I was annoyed but whatever. She then did the same thing in the que to pay.

She left the shop and while I was in the que to pay, and by now, barely going to make my train due to the slow deli, she came back in, picked up a bottle of water and approached the man at the top of the que.

I was second in the que, she had the same story. “Sorry is it ok to jump in, I just have a baby in the car”.

he said it was ok. It was not ok with me. I piped up and told her no it wasn’t okay, everyone’s got places to be and I’m in a hurry too, she’s after skipping twice and wants to skip the third time? Get to the back of the que and wait your turn.

she started yelling I was very rude, very rude indeed, turned to the sales assistant saying how rude I was and the sales assistant served her.

the man who let her go ahead of him also let me go ahead of him.

I didn’t complain to the sales assistant but I called the shop immediately after I got on the train, complained to the manager and he called me back there tonight to say he watched the cctv back and he is after reprimanding the assistant in question.

I mean, letters and spellings aren't interchangeable. You can't just decide to spell a word randomly and say well I know that's wrong but that's how I want to spell it. Most people will struggle to read it because that's how reading comprehension works. Letters make meaning when used in particular combinations. Using the wrong combination means the reader's brain won't ascribe the same meaning. It's involuntary and makes reading something much more difficult.

People are also ridiculing the OP because it's either totally mad behaviour to randomly choose to spell a word wrong or she's lying about knowing the correct spelling and both options are funny and worth laughing at. Nobody would be laughing at her if she said she made a mistake with the spelling and then corrected it.

Woman was an ass for jumping the queue but you really are a sad act for calling the shop. Its not shop assistants concern if she's asked other people to jump in. Honestly people must have very easy lives with no problems if this is what makes them so upset.

The woman was annoying. It was weird and ott to call the shop after. As someone who worked in retail management, the manager made up a story to satisfy you.

I very much doubt the assistant got into trouble. It's hard filling these kind of jobs at the moment and it's no bloody wonder!

The assistant was paid to serve at the counter and presumably she does that well and is not there to referee squabbles between overgrown kids.

The queue jumper woman probably got to jump the queue because the assistant knows from past experience that the pushy mouthy ones really kick off and it simply isn't worth arguing with them. In fact, it makes the whole wait even longer for everyone, so in the end it's easier to let them have their way.

The queue jumper would probably have complained about her too, if she hadn't got her way. Can't win for losing!

I've done a bit of hospitality work many years ago and most people are great. The few pains we had to put up with who complained - well, if the complaint was vexatious, the manager made all the right noises and we'd have a good laugh about it afterwards 😂

You're giving her way too much credit, she was caught out by not knowing the correct spelling and made up a daft reason that makes no sense when all the other words are typed in full.

SA is in the wrong. She is not a bad person but it is not good customer service. I would not want her to get in to trouble, but pointing this out is the right thing to do if you have time to. OP is someone who does us all a favour by having standards.

The woman was clearly taking the piss and in my store most of our checkout staff would have absolutely sent her to queue with the rest of them. You were being unreasonable though to ring the shop, if that was me answering the phone I’d have put it down thought you were a nob and not given it a second thought, never mind reprimand someone who was probably just trying to diffuse a potential situation.

Oh no Linda honey I was with you till this post. You totally had a point about the queue jumping but after the ageism you displayed in this post it's hard to be sympathetic and now I actually feel you deserved to be treated unfairly. :-(
