Seems most people have done theirs already, we are planning to do it this Sunday.

We're getting ours this weekend. We keep it up until 12th night and whilst it definitely starts to look a teeny bit sorry for itself towards then we keep its topped up with water and it broadly stays fine. Only reason we put it up so early is because we love it, it looks so pretty, we want to enjoy it for as long as possible.

JaceLancs · 01/12/2023 23:16

I’ve not but I am away on holiday so it will go up on the 10 December

meatbaseddessert · 02/12/2023 08:44

I'll be honest. I haven't had any Xmas decorations for about 20 years. What's the point? Seriously.

The point is to take time to be joyful at things.
We have our outside lights up, and they help me feel joy each time I see them.

I can also find joy at nice numbers on my car mile-ometer such as 56,789 or 60,000.

meatbaseddessert · 02/12/2023 08:55

@TeenDivided I can be 'joyful' without a placing a chopped down tree covered in tinsel in my house!

The joy as it gets chucked out dead in the road come Jan is palpable and I always wish I had partook.

PermanentTemporary · 02/12/2023 08:58

To me a tree is Christmas and I like Christmas. Looking forward to seeing all the decorations going up.

thelittlestbird · 02/12/2023 09:12

Ours goes up first weekend of December. If I had my way it'd be down on 27th but DH insists on keeping it to early Jan.

That is completely shifting the traditional timeframe for Christmas decorations. Up too early and down before Christmas has properly gone.

I take mine down anytime between 2-5 January but doesn't go up until at least 12 December.

Although I too keep to 'traditional' timescales, I think traditions can and do change.

Many people these days (maybe with a more secular view?) have the Christmas season running through December with the culmination on Christmas day, rather than Christmas Day being the start of 12 days.

It's not for me, but each to their own. Quite possibly probably in 40 years time the 1st-25th will be the accepted time.

Your mother would be equally horrified with me! Love it! There's a lot of freedom in being common and vulgar ☺️

Drhow · 02/12/2023 09:39

Not having one this year for the first time because we’re going on holiday for Christmas so it seems a bit pointless since we buy a real tree every year. Put the fireplace decorations, fairy lights, window lights and bunting up though so it’s still festive.

thelittlestbird · 02/12/2023 09:53

@TheAverageJoanne there are many, many traditions we don't engage with 😂

Elphame · 02/12/2023 09:58

Another 2 weeks before mine will go up

Haha! Most days I do something which she would give an exaggerated shudder about and declare it vulgar or common!
I have vivid memories of extended family Boxing Day gathering at my aunties house which my mother hated - as my dads side of the family had “ common” Christmas traditions. My poor dad, he deserved a gold long service medal for staying married for 60 + years!

Tumbleweed101 · 02/12/2023 14:33

We usually do it first weekend in December but my children are pretty much all grown up so this year I've bought a smaller potted tree that can go on the sideboard and I won't need to rearrange the whole room to fit in the bigger artifical tree. Because it's alive I won't be bringing it in until a week before Xmas.

However, we have put up lights today and I have a poinsettia which makes it look Christmassy.

Goodornot · 02/12/2023 14:35

It's way too early. A real one will wilt by the 25th. A naff artificial one, well if you must

Sparehair · 02/12/2023 14:37

I'll probably do some decorations next weekend but the tree on the 17th. Will stay up till 5th Jan.

AnotherEmma · 02/12/2023 14:40

I've never understood why people do it so early. Before December is ridiculous IMO. We always get a real tree about 10 days before Christmas and every year there is less and less to choose from Angry Although last year we got it half price so that was a bonus!

Because of where the weekends fall this year, we'll do ours on 16/17 Dec.

We have some lights for outside the house and I'll put them up tomorrow, will cheer up the pitch dark evenings.

But for indoor decorations we need to declutter and tidy first - two young kids and not much space so it's always a bit tricky!

Our traditions are Christmas is 1-25 December, back in work 26-31 December (where we live Boxing Day isn’t a Bank Holiday) and then the NY and its celebrations 1 January onwards.

No, not in the mood this year. Brought no presents either yet. Had a family death and finding it impossible to get motivated.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/12/2023 14:43

Nope, not a stick of decorating done yet. But I'm at youngest daughter's for Christmas Day, am working up until then and no small children at home to decorate for. I like seeing the tree up and the lights and all that, but living alone it seems like a lot of effort to go to just for me, and not being here on the day makes me feel like not bothering.

I will, but it will take me another fortnight and probably one of the kids coming round and enticing me out to buy a tree...

Boomboom22 · 02/12/2023 14:44

Put it up today, lovely. Won't do other decs though so it's the only thing we'll have. I'll add chocs later.
