What job could you never do?

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

Binman. I don’t have the stomach for it!

EBearhug · 11/11/2023 20:18

According to HR - sales. (I am not in sales. We were just talking about possible career options.)

Theendoftheday · 11/11/2023 20:19

Social worker. I do work in adult social care but there is no way I could be a social worker. Too big a work load to manage cases effectively and serious conquenses for getting things wrong.

Lecc · 11/11/2023 20:19

Chiropodist, pedicurist etc I am not keen on other people's feet.

AhBiscuits · 11/11/2023 20:20

Anything that involved me having to touch dirty, smelly people or deal with bodily fluids.
I passed some paramedics tending to a homeless man who was passed out and covered in sick. I'm glad there's people who do it, I couldn't do that for all the money in the world.

Auspicious · 11/11/2023 20:20

Ha I did 56h shifts as a doctor so had to have empathy and night shift stamina!

I couldn’t be a taxi driver or delivery driver. I hate having to park on busy roads; after thirty years of London driving I have had enough!

There are many jobs I would hate: office work, work with animals, actor, politician, working outdoors. There are very few jobs I would want to do!

Moonface31 · 11/11/2023 20:20

Abattoir worker

Dacadactyl · 11/11/2023 20:21

Anything to do with spreadsheets, finances or figures. I'd be bored to tears and jumping out of the window in milliseconds.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 11/11/2023 20:21

I saw someone emptying a dog waste bin yesterday and I thought to myself that I couldn't do that job.

Mumaway · 11/11/2023 20:21

Teacher. God, the horror

Funkyslippers · 11/11/2023 20:22

Dentist. Nobody likes going there. I honestly don't know why people would study for years to become one.

Also anything involving nights or early starts. Also bus driver or driving instructor or anything that's outdoors all the time. I also noticed the lifeguard at the local pool just sat there and I thought, now that's (mostly!) a very boring job

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 11/11/2023 20:22

Anything medical that involves bodily fluids. I gag, I vomit, I just couldn’t.

Reba767 · 11/11/2023 20:22

Work in a slaughter house
Anything with too much paper work/computer work

UnderTheSkyline · 11/11/2023 20:22

Butcher
Abattoir worker
Anything that exploits animals.

Oh God just kill me now @Auspicious 🤣 I think that’d be my worst nightmare! Kudos to you

Any job that meant I had to drive in London.

Mummymummy89 · 11/11/2023 20:26

I don't think I could do anything other than the jobs I currently do!

I've got a good science degree and lots of people with this degree go into things involving software including financial analysis and that sort of thing. I can barely use Microsoft excel tbh.

My main job is teaching and I do everything with an ordinary board pen. Hate technology for the most part.

I'm not even that old (mid 30s) but I feel the changing world of tech is pulling the carpet from under my feet - colleagues using AI to write reports and stuff like that.

So I'm unfit for anything requiring IT beyond a Word document. Too squeamish for anything health or caring related. Too disorganised for management or admin. Far too weak bodily for anything manual, like gardening.

I can natter away for England and I know my (shortage) subject well, so teaching it is!

MagentaRocks · 11/11/2023 20:26

Most of the ones mentioned - especially anything to do with feet and sales.

I do work nights though, they can be tough sometimes but you just have to get into a routine and figure out what works best to cope.

UnderTheSkyline · 11/11/2023 20:26

Anything that meant being famous.

UpUpUpU · 11/11/2023 20:26

I would hate to be a teacher. I just do not have the patience!

A nurse. Absolutely no way could I do it. Absolute kudos to the amazing people who can do both of my horror jobs

Fionaville · 11/11/2023 20:27

Nothing that involves cleaning up sick or shit. Nothing that involves being in enclosed space with a really dirty/smelly person. I have a really sensitive nose and a strong gag reflex, so it's just not practical.
I struggle getting up before 7am regularly too, so definitely not a milkman 😅

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/11/2023 20:28

Anything medical. Anything that involved lots of driving. Or being underwater.

Teacher. God, the horror
Grin I like it (mostly!).The things about teaching that non-teachers hate the idea of are often the bits of the job that teachers like!

It’s the kids I’d dislike 😂😂

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 11/11/2023 20:29

I went to the hygienist at the dentist last week. That was my first thought- I could never do this job due to all the scraping sounds. I do appreciate it must also be satisfying but I could never do it!

Being a dentist is interesting. Lots of dentists are from families of dentists and if they’re not? They are people who’ve got positive experience of the dentist. In addition, dentists who hate their job aren’t going to let you do work experience so it’s kind of a self licking lollipop.

It’s the public that make it Shit. And the public who make NHS dentists close their books (after the MPs underfund the service) so we only have ourselves to blame.
