What job could you never do?

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

Ha I did 56h shifts as a doctor so had to have empathy and night shift stamina!

Oh God just kill me now @Auspicious 🤣 I think that’d be my worst nightmare! Kudos to you

We used to start at 9am Saturday and leave Monday at 5pm. Lucky if we snatched a couple of hours sleep here or there. It was brutal. And dangerous for us and patients. I still get flashbacks to how stressful and exhausting it was. I am glad things have changed.

idontlikealdi · 11/11/2023 20:30

Carer
Working with young children

suntannedsnowballs · 11/11/2023 20:31

Anything to do with vomit - which ruled me out of my midwifery dream

I've been hypnotised, EMDR'd, medicated etc. none of it made the slightest bit of difference to my horrific emetophobia. I can't even cope with my children

I became an engineer instead, definitely no vomit involved

TheOGCCL · 11/11/2023 20:33

Waitress
Nurse
Teacher
Actor

NalafromtheLionKing · 11/11/2023 20:33

Carer, cleaner, anything that involves dealing with vomit/blood/s**t, abattoir worker, night or long day shift work, high profile politician or public speaker, dealing with violent or very annoying/high maintenance people, customer complaints person at an airline (possibly unless I could deal with them by e-mail only).

Thelnebriati · 11/11/2023 20:34

Acting or singing, I'd die of cringe if I had to get up on a stage.

Leafyfriday · 11/11/2023 20:38

Anything in an office 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.
Have done it, the rush hour traffic, the dread of Monday, the relief of getting to Wednesday and finally the Friday euphoria, only for the weekend to pass in a flash and back to the grind. Give me shift work anytime 😊

heetud · 11/11/2023 20:38

Oh my goodness so much. I couldn't do anything that involves dealing with sad/traumatic exposure so that rules out NHS, schools, police, social work etc etc. I couldn't work shifts. I don't want to work weekends. I couldn't be in the military where you don't really have autonomy. I wouldn't want to work with children. I couldn't do a customer facing role (again). Financial services would bore me. I can't get up early. I'm done with commuting.

So that basically limits me to the civil service 😂

Summerbay23 · 11/11/2023 20:38

Paramedic (although all respect to people who are paramedics).

Yes agree to the working nights thing but partly I’m too old and like my regular sleep patterns.

downdowndowndowndown · 11/11/2023 20:39

It's funny I work in a medical environment and I have both a strong stomach (haven't puked since I was 18) and a rubbish sense of smell, so I feel like I was born to do it.

Mine is:
Anything relating to numbers or statistics
Anything based at a desk
Anything where you're just making money for someone else and not helping people
Anything to do with finances
Child protection/ safeguarding (too sad, not sure I believe in the system as it is)

Museum1066 · 11/11/2023 20:40

Night shifts as I'm a day person, then I guess a time traveling historian, too tempting to try to change the past.

Greenpolkadot · 11/11/2023 20:41

Anything that involves mucous..social work..teeth..telephone sales...bank work..insurance...kids..or vermin.

I could however do mortuary attendant..genealogy..estate agent or undertaker

Topofthemountain · 11/11/2023 20:42

Fisherman or fishmonger - I really can't stomach the smell of fish.

Optician - eyes give me the heebee-jeebies, kudos as well to all the staff who do things like scan my eyes and take photos at my hospital appointments.

Apparently dentistry is becoming very popular, it was always seen as medicine's poor relation, but outside of NHS work there is a lot of potential money and none of the politics of the NHS.

5128gap · 11/11/2023 20:42

Anything that involved animal suffering, heights, maths or science. Anything that kept me imprisoned in a place for a period of time not of my choosing, with no autonomy about where i went and when, like teaching, call centre or factory line.

funinthesun19 · 11/11/2023 20:42

Anything medical. I don’t want other people’s health / life in my hands.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 11/11/2023 20:43

Yes!! I hate eyes so much I can’t even look in the mirror when I rinse out my eye if something’s inside. I really want to stop wearing glasses and wear contact lenses but I couldn’t cope with touching my eyes and putting something inside. Even typing this is making me squirm!

Accountancy
Numbers bore the crap out of me.

AhBiscuits · 11/11/2023 20:44

I know a few dentists and they are minted.

Topofthemountain · 11/11/2023 20:45

I could never wear contacts either.

smooshraspberry · 11/11/2023 20:45

Comedian or Prime Minister.

yellowlane · 11/11/2023 20:45

A fisherwoman or a rat catcher. I'd give everything else a go.

Autumndays22 · 11/11/2023 20:45

Police officer. Shift work, lousy pay, abusive people, risky situations.

Littlebitofacold · 11/11/2023 20:46

Anything involving blood so doctor, dentist, nurse, vet, pharmacist and I’m sure there’s many more.

Takeaseat · 11/11/2023 20:46

The people that collect sanitary and nappy bins from public toilets. The thought of it makes me feel dirty.

RantyAnty · 11/11/2023 20:47

Anything where I have to stand all day or be outside in hot weather.
