What job could you never do?

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 11/11/2023 20:16

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

Driving instructor - stuck in a car all day with people, ugh
Taxi driver - stuck in a car all day with people, ugh
Air hostess - stuck in a plane all day with people, ugh
Bus driver - stuck in a bus all day with people, ugh

You get the gist

Stuck in small spaces with other people all day long, I couldn't bear it.

In fact, I'm constantly on the look out for a job that requires as little contact with people as poss. There doesn't seen to be one though

H34th · 11/11/2023 21:44

Most of the ones I was thinking were mentioned, but just to add

  • anything where I'd have to take my clothes off in front of people/ photos intended for the public, like glamour model, lap dancing, and all the rest.

(I imagine a big percentage of actual sex workers are trapped in impossible situations and have little say on anything.)

Squirrelsnut · 11/11/2023 21:52

Anything harming animals.
Anything involving dirty environments or people.
I could probably hack a really boring job for a while by zoning out.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 11/11/2023 21:55

Auspicious · 11/11/2023 20:20

Ha I did 56h shifts as a doctor so had to have empathy and night shift stamina!

I couldn’t be a taxi driver or delivery driver. I hate having to park on busy roads; after thirty years of London driving I have had enough!

There are many jobs I would hate: office work, work with animals, actor, politician, working outdoors. There are very few jobs I would want to do!

You did 56hr shifts!!??

In one go??

I couldn’t even stay awake for 24 hours!

Auspicious · 11/11/2023 20:30

We used to start at 9am Saturday and leave Monday at 5pm. Lucky if we snatched a couple of hours sleep here or there. It was brutal. And dangerous for us and patients. I still get flashbacks to how stressful and exhausting it was. I am glad things have changed.

@Auspicious sorry I’ve seen you’ve answered it.
That is absolute madness and definitely something I couldn’t do!!

I saw someone emptying a dog waste bin yesterday and I thought to myself that I couldn't do that job.

Yes I've always thought that would be my worst nightmare

Also lorry driver
Or working on a submarine

Wherethewildthymeblows · 11/11/2023 22:03

Nursing or medicine. I'd love to be able to but I can't abide vomit.
Telesales. I couldn't bear to cold call people.
Any job involving heights or weights. I'm not very strong and have lost my head for heights.

My preference would be a job with good camaraderie, no matter how stressful the work, camaraderie sees you through.

TheMoth · 11/11/2023 22:05

Night shifts.
Jobs where I have to touch people.
Actually, I could probably be a surgeon, but nothing where people are awake and bleeding or have bones sticking out.
Factory work. Did it as an 18 year old but I couldn't do it ever again. The boredom crippled me.

tothesea · 11/11/2023 22:07

I watched Boiling Point recently and thought that I just couldn’t cope with that kind of working environment..the heat, the stress, the fiddly putting together of the dishes but mainly the getting shouted at. It made me anxious just watching it!

Catsmere · 11/11/2023 22:12

Teaching or any sort of childcare.

Being a cook.

Aged care. I have enough of that as my mother's carer and I don't have to bathe her, we have homecare workers for that.

Nursing.

Outdoor work or anything standing up all day. Used to do that, my feet and back wouldn't cope now.

Police. Prison officer. Bus driver. Air hostess.

Anything with a uniform demanding women wear skirts, hose and heels. Not happening.

Anything required mathematical skills. I'm not innumerate but I may as well be.

Animal welfare, because I'd want to visit terminal retribution on cruel or neglectful humans.

snoreb · 11/11/2023 22:12

Bin man

squidgybits · 11/11/2023 22:18

I have nothing but immense praise for nurses, I couldn't do it
Vomit/sh*t/blood/urine ! I say this as a grandmother , god knows how I survived! I would clean disgusting toilets all day (if I had to) stomach folds @ anything hospital or actual wounded/sick people ( too emotional?)
Nurses are actual angels

ListerMummy · 11/11/2023 22:20

Obstetrician in private practice, literally on-call to deliver babies 24/7.

SallyWD · 11/11/2023 22:22

Work in an abbatoir. Social worker

MassageForLife · 11/11/2023 22:26

Basketball player. Much too short.

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/11/2023 22:29

I’ll tell you all a secret about hygienists
we love the gross - the dirtier the mouth the better

i however couldn’t do an office job Same faces same irritating habits every day no thanks
or drive a lorry - that must be so boring driving 7/8/9 hours a day

justabigdisco · 11/11/2023 22:32

I work in a hospice and lots of people say they couldn’t do my job, but I find it very rewarding.

I have watched the guys who empty the portaloos at festivals and I think there’s a job I definitely couldn’t do. Oh and teacher 😂

RipePeach · 11/11/2023 22:40

Lots of the above but also anything involving being trapped in small spaces. I'd hate to be a submariner for example - just the idea of being in a tiny space deep under the sea for weeks on end gives me the shivers!

KohlaParasaurus · 11/11/2023 22:40

Any job that's mainly or entirely based on spreadsheets, ledgers, and minute numerical details. Especially if it doesn't involve much interaction with people.
Architect.
Singer, dancer, musician, painter. Not even if I'd been hothoused since the day I was born.

(I also remember the 56 hour shifts on call as a junior doctor, and absolutely no allowance being made for the possibility that going without sleep for such a long time might affect our ability to make decisions, perform practical tasks, and be faultlessly polite and professional.)

Coolblur · 11/11/2023 22:44

I wouldn't want to do anything that meant I was famous, I absolutely hate the idea of everyone looking at me all the time!

On a side note, as someone who regularly works nightshifts, no one likes doing them, they're just a necessary evil and part of so many jobs that people rely on to be done.
If I could choose again, I'd not do anything involving shiftwork because it's so incompatible with family life and so difficult to get childcare. The UK is set up for Mon-Fri 9-5 type work.

Dillane · 11/11/2023 22:46

Deep Sea Diver (I’m claustrophobic and can’t swim).

OooohAhhhh · 11/11/2023 22:50

Door to door sales person... how awful.

blueshoes · 11/11/2023 22:50

Working in CEOPs or any content screening job such as in facebook or twitter that requires me to look at pictures of abuse. I take my hat off to anyone who does it as it is such a worthy thing to do. I would just crumble with secondary PTSD.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 11/11/2023 22:51

I could not work in an abattoir.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBabyYeahRight · 11/11/2023 22:59

Flight attendant. Turbulence isn't an issue and neither is landing. I just don't like taking off. Plus I'd need to have my arms stretched by about 6 inches to reach the overhead bins.
