What job could you never do?

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

Carer

I think I would like to be a vet, but I would have to have someone else do the euthanising 😢

And having worked in our local council offices as a student - really, just kill me now.

I was going to say teacher, but then I was reminded that anything involving fame would be my worst nightmare. I'm so private, I couldn't bear it.

Same, I don't even use Facebook!

DaisyGatz · 11/11/2023 21:03

I worked regular 12 hour night shifts for 10 years in a job that required a great deal of empathy and i loved the people who i worked with.

Unfortunately, night shifts started to effect my mental health so I no longer work those shifts. My repect to those that do is ten fold.

The job i just would not be able to do would be police or social worker.

lljkk · 11/11/2023 21:03

Anything that involves a lot of body parts. Cutting, rearrangeing, moving, cleaning. I'm very squeamish.

bonkersAlice · 11/11/2023 21:06

I did twenty years for the NHS in emergency and intensive care medicine but I couldn't do: - Care Home Assistant, anything in Oncology, Obs and Gynae or Maternity.

Jobs where I've had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with :- Police Officer, Prison Officer, Social Worker and Youth Offender Councillor. I have no idea what the minimum selection criteria is for these jobs but I could tell you things that would frighten you.

TheOutlaws · 11/11/2023 21:06

I love being a teacher. But I’d really love a job I could do from home at least a couple of days per week; I’m at my desk by 7.30am every day and I don’t get to go to my own kids’ assemblies/presentations. I find the tricky parents annoying, too. I’ve lost count of the number of incredibly polite and helpful emails I’ve sent in response to demanding emails, only to receive nothing in reply. It’s so incredibly rude. (Loads of lovely parents too!).

I couldn’t do a job involving loads of travel or dealing with irate people (although, strangely, irate kids are fine?!).

Riverlee · 11/11/2023 21:07

Working on a fresh fish or meat counter.

Any job that involves driving.

Delphinium20 · 11/11/2023 21:08

Personal assistant because people who can't do basic things for themselves really, really piss me off. Anything to do w/ birds and their droppings (I know that one is weirdly specific).

Accountancy
Numbers bore the crap out of me.

I'm an accountant. Admittedly it's not everyone's cup of tea but I find the project work interesting.

  • Flight attendant !!!!
( did you guess that i hate flying? ;)

But seriously, that job had so much prestige in the past. My father always told me "learn languages, you could be a stewardess..." urgh ... thanks)

Papyrophile · 11/11/2023 21:10

I loved being a freelance writer, because I'm interested in business. Everyday was different, and I hate routine, and doing what I'm told. I did however quite enjoy working in hospitality, as a chef, waitress and barmaid. It was fun, trying to give even unreasonable people a good time and experience.

Dymaxion · 11/11/2023 21:13

I wouldn't want to work in an Abbatoir.

Haha my mum used to say this and judging from your username, we're a similar age. It's shocking how it wasn't that long ago that girls (not boys) were encouraged to go for those sorts of jobs! She used to say we were so pretty we could be models or air stewardesses.

She was really supportive/proud of me going on to do a science degree - she just never dreamed that was an option because in her world, girls became secretaries like she did.

Papyrophile · 11/11/2023 21:14

I enjoyed the teaching practice during my PGCE but I was 55 by the time I qualified and not really an appealing prospect for a SLT to manage.

I would find care work very hard grind.

ssd · 11/11/2023 21:15

Dentist...yuk

BitofaStramash · 11/11/2023 21:15

Nothing that involves personal care e.g nurse, care worker, podiatrist, dentist

IndiKid2015 · 11/11/2023 21:16

I’d be useless as a social worker, I’d never be able to switch off and when inevitably vulnerable people became involved, I’d want them all to come and live with me.

nobodysdaughter · 11/11/2023 21:17

Yep abattoir worker - I couldn't inflict pain on, and kill animals for a living.

Justhereforaibu1 · 11/11/2023 21:25

Dentist - gross but maybe you'd get used to it.
Dancer - 2 left feet and shy
Pest control, I'm terrified.
Probably not cleaning out houses like you see on the TV as there would be vermin.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 11/11/2023 21:26

Libertass · 11/11/2023 20:54

Care work. I just don’t have what it takes in terms of empathy & selflessness to care for people (or animals) and I’m way, way too squeamish. And the pay is a joke. I honestly don’t know how people do it.

Prison officer or probation worker. Again, I don’t have the patience, tolerance or empathy to deal with the society’s problems.

I couldn’t serve in the military, either. The idea of me going abroad to kill foreign people with whom I had no quarrel because some corrupt, cretinous imbecile of a politician like Boris Johnson says so is just a complete non-starter. I’m too independent-minded, too politically opinionated, too much of an individual and there is no way I would tolerate being shouted & sworn at by some ‘instructor’. I would be a liability and I wouldn’t last five minutes.

This is literally me in a nutsell

Serving behind a bar.

I cannot stand drunk and obnoxious men in particular.

TheGoogleMum · 11/11/2023 21:42

The first thing that came to mind was I couldn't work in a morgue. Being around dead bodies would freak me out!

HighlandCowSaysBooNotMoo · 11/11/2023 21:43

Fast food places, kitchens, anywhere hot and stressful
