What job could you never do?

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

9-5 office based job, I’ve tried it and could have cried with boredom (even though it was a fairly fast paced environment)
Echo anything to do with emptying waste (over developed gag reflex)
Teacher, couldn’t be doing with the parents
Anything IT based
Accountancy
Vet/vet nurse (the end of life stuff would break me)

Hugely grateful for people who do any of the above ❤️

Starbeeees · 11/11/2023 20:48

Anything to do with food actually 🤣

Silverdogblue · 11/11/2023 20:49

AhBiscuits · 11/11/2023 20:44

I know a few dentists and they are minted.

Lol. Of course. Confused

tortoiseshellcats · 11/11/2023 20:50

Any kind of office or desk job
Working with small children

I would happily try any medical or emergency job though, and I quite like nightshifts

Ponoka7 · 11/11/2023 20:50

Anything to do with teeth. Plumber, wet, slimy and stinky.

MotherOfVizslas · 11/11/2023 20:51

I was going to say teacher, but then I was reminded that anything involving fame would be my worst nightmare. I'm so private, I couldn't bear it.

EmpressSoleil · 11/11/2023 20:52

Chiropodist for me. Absolutely detest feet.
I also couldn't work in end of life care in any form. I'd be crying every day.
Any kind of debt collection. I couldn't sleep at night knowing I was chasing people for money they probably didn't have.

Allfourwalls · 11/11/2023 20:52

Fitness class instructor - I hate exercise and I am so unfit. Can't imagine doing several classes a day, I would die 😂

AffIt · 11/11/2023 20:52

Anything to do with children or the general public. I worked in hospitality and retail when I was younger and I'd sooner remove my own eyes with a spoon than do it again.

I work in tech now and my days are filled with code and spreadsheets (and minimal people) which I love.

There's a shoe for every foot, as they say!

suntannedsnowballs · 11/11/2023 20:31

Anything to do with vomit - which ruled me out of my midwifery dream

I've been hypnotised, EMDR'd, medicated etc. none of it made the slightest bit of difference to my horrific emetophobia. I can't even cope with my children

I became an engineer instead, definitely no vomit involved

That is so sad to hear 😔
I hope you enjoy being an engineer? It is quite the different role!

RonnieMcdonnie · 11/11/2023 20:54

Carer
teacher
butcher

Libertass · 11/11/2023 20:54

Care work. I just don’t have what it takes in terms of empathy & selflessness to care for people (or animals) and I’m way, way too squeamish. And the pay is a joke. I honestly don’t know how people do it.

Prison officer or probation worker. Again, I don’t have the patience, tolerance or empathy to deal with the society’s problems.

I couldn’t serve in the military, either. The idea of me going abroad to kill foreign people with whom I had no quarrel because some corrupt, cretinous imbecile of a politician like Boris Johnson says so is just a complete non-starter. I’m too independent-minded, too politically opinionated, too much of an individual and there is no way I would tolerate being shouted & sworn at by some ‘instructor’. I would be a liability and I wouldn’t last five minutes.

3luckystars · 11/11/2023 20:55

Carer for the elderly. I don’t know how they do it, they are amazing. I could not do that job.

Also anything cold.

TheKeatingFive · 11/11/2023 20:55

Rat catcher. Or anything related to sewage.

Social worker. I do work in adult social care but there is no way I could be a social worker. Too big a work load to manage cases effectively and serious conquenses for getting things wrong.

Certainly. Senior social worker here...the magnitude of cases these days from say, 10 years ago is nuts. Managers just pile cases on you instead of taking on other SW's.

Salome61 · 11/11/2023 20:56

RSPCA Inspector. I did think I wanted to do it in the 1980's, and found out about the training. I changed my mind and realised I could never do it when I was told you start by learning to euthanise big animals first - horses, cows etc.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 11/11/2023 20:58

Moonface31 · 11/11/2023 20:20

Abattoir worker

Same

GotNewHair · 11/11/2023 20:58

I never realised I hated so many jobs. Anything sitting down - nope. Anything involving the very old or ill or regular proper nursing care type body stuff. Anything quiet. Anything with shifts. Anything with uncomfortable uniforms. Anything too gentle and polite. Not too much adult customer service stuff.

I have think firewoman, gardener, facilitator of learning or activity leader seem ok.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 11/11/2023 20:58

I couldn't work in retail, I don't have the patience to deal with customers.

I have always worked with small children, often children with complex health needs. I have worked in a children's hospice, working nights, working with small children and their families, sometimes working with children at the end of their lives, it was a job I loved.

Winterday1991 · 11/11/2023 20:58

Charity fundraiser

Jewelspun · 11/11/2023 20:59

Cleaner, waitress, abattoir worker, nurse, dentist, podiatrist, social worker.

onwardandupwards · 11/11/2023 21:00

Pest control worker, just the thought makes me itch!!!

Destiny123 · 11/11/2023 21:00

Dentist. Hate hate teeth. The amount I look in people's mouths as an anaesthetist is my limit of teeth!

I hate nights. Can't wait till they decrease in frequency when I finish training

fetchacloth · 11/11/2023 21:01
