What job could you never do?

Any job that would require me to work night shifts. I seriously couldn’t do it and don’t understand how people actually manage it. My uncles been doing night shifts for 25 years!

Any job that would require me to have a huge amount of empathy. I really struggle with that emotion when it comes to strangers and I don’t know why.

What are yours?

Haha my mum used to say this and judging from your username, we're a similar age. It's shocking how it wasn't that long ago that girls (not boys) were encouraged to go for those sorts of jobs! She used to say we were so pretty we could be models or air stewardesses.

She was really supportive/proud of me going on to do a science degree - she just never dreamed that was an option because in her world, girls became secretaries like she did.

I wanted to be a flight attendant (too short 😣) but why didn't anyone say to me 30 years ago "oh Boris with good maths and science a levels you could be a pilot "

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 11/11/2023 23:04

Could never do a job in a tiny space. Caving etc. absolute nightmare.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 11/11/2023 21:55

You did 56hr shifts!!??

In one go??

I couldn’t even stay awake for 24 hours!

It was hell on earth. I still feel angry thirty years on.

One of my supervisors was a much younger and more handsome then dynamic consultant called Patrick Vallance with a full head of hair ;-)

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2023 23:37

Work in an abattoir.
Anything to do with the fur trade.

tulippa · 11/11/2023 23:39

Stand up comedian. Couldn't cope with all the attention focused on me and I'm not quick thinking enough.

AndWordsWhen · 11/11/2023 23:40

Surgeon. I have shaky hands so would probably kill all the patients.

evilharpy · 11/11/2023 23:42

Anything that may involve vomit. So childcare, care work, even teaching. I'm quite badly emetophobic.

Vomit issues aside, I would hate to do any sort of childcare or working with children, just doesn't interest me at all.

I couldn't be a driver, or at least not one that had to drive long distance. I can manage an hour and start falling asleep. I blame astigmatism for making my eyes tired! Might be ok as something like a taxi driver where it was broken up into shorter journeys.

Interesting that a few people have said working with numbers and/or Excel, that's the bit of my current job that I actually like!

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2023 23:43

Abbatoir

Binman. I don’t have the stomach for it!

Same here. Fair play to those that do!

Angrymum22 · 12/11/2023 00:39

There are very few jobs that I wouldn’t want to do, but then I’m a a dentist. Judging by how many PPs wouldn’t do my job then that may explain it.

HellsAngel81 · 12/11/2023 06:33

I could never do office work (too boring), or work with children.

As a vet nurse, I can cope with body fluids, bad smells, and some pretty traumatic shit, but I could never work in an abbotoir either.

MyCreakyKnees · 12/11/2023 06:43

Work on the floor in a factory or a warehouse.
Work in a mine ( not that there's any left in the UK )
Deep sea fisherwoman

mjf981 · 12/11/2023 06:45

Psychologist or psychiatrist.

I honestly don't have the patience or empathy for people with mental health issues. I just couldn't do it.

RocketIceLollie · 12/11/2023 07:17

Fish monger. I always remember the fish monger delivering the fish to the restaurant I once worked at and he stank so badly.

Norfolkbumpkin · 12/11/2023 07:17

A street cleaner, especially in a busy city. I just could not stomach cleaning up vomit/poo/urine from pavements and doorways.

Beezknees · 12/11/2023 07:27

Teaching. I struggle with kids other than my own, I can't imagine how I'd keep a class of 30 engaged all day. Hats off to all teachers, you are wonderful.

I used to do cold calling for a home improvement company when DS was young as it's the only job I could get at the time, it was that or be on benefits. I didn't like it but I managed a year there.

Lochness1975 · 12/11/2023 08:47

Cleaner- couldn’t spend my days scrubbing someone else’s poo of a toilet. Mind numbing.

AbbeyGailsParty · 12/11/2023 08:53

Anything that involves animals dying.
Anything that involves human vomit. Animals ok, humans no way.
Midwife. All that mess. I had my eyes shut when my own were born.
Wouldn’t be too keen on being an undertaker but could do it if I had to.

I wouldn't want to do anything that meant I was famous, I absolutely hate the idea of everyone looking at me all the time!

On a side note, as someone who regularly works nightshifts, no one likes doing them, they're just a necessary evil and part of so many jobs that people rely on to be done.
If I could choose again, I'd not do anything involving shiftwork because it's so incompatible with family life and so difficult to get childcare. The UK is set up for Mon-Fri 9-5 type work.

That’s true, I guess someone has to do them but why you?! What made you apply for a night time role? Was it because of the location/job role or was the pay a bit better than day shift?

A carer in a nursing home, I'm in awe of the people who care for my dad. They need to be paid more.
I did help care for him for a few years while he was at home, including washing and toileting, but that was because he was my lovely dad and I didn't want to leave him in an undignified situation so it had to be done. Not sure I could do it for strangers.

I actually wouldn't mind being a cleaner or something, I have a strong stomach generally and I'd say it's quite satisfying getting things looking clean and sparkling. Plus less having to deal with people, and you could listen to music while you clean and generally be left alone.

I currently work for a small charity, office based and I'm not loving it. Would love to do something more dynamic or practical but I have no idea what. I've sort of just drifted into officey type jobs over the years because that's my previous experience.

I'm starting to realise that I'm not good with people, hate sitting at a computer all day and having to make small talk everyday drains me.

FatOaf · 12/11/2023 09:42

Anything that involves deliberately misleading and/or cheating people. Doesn't leave many options, unfortunately.
