to not like long, painted "done" nails?

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:25

They give me the heebie jeebies or rather gross me out. Short nails even if painted are tolerable although I prefer no polish at all but gel nails, long nails, stick on nails, acrylic nails are all just .... shudder.

If I am at a deli and someone getting the food has long nails it totally puts me off. I can't watch Mary Berry and her long nails touch the food she makes, its definitely unsanitary. I know so many women spend a fortune doing their nails and take great pride in it but I will never understand why because I find them so grim.

Is anyone else like this?

Not for me either but to each their own.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 07/11/2023 00:27

Yeah minging! Waste of money and look ugly.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:27

@crispcreambun Sure just don't touch any food with them!

Same, don’t know why but long nails have always creeped me out ever since I was a kid.

Panastasia · 07/11/2023 00:28

I completely agree. For me, even worse than seeing them in a food prep setting, is seeing medical professionals wearing them. They seem unhygienic.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:29

@Panastasia Absolutely and they must be a hindrance as well as being unclean.

@millerpie Yes me to, I've always really disliked them.

Yanbu. I HATE those long acrylic things
Short and clean for me

crispcreambun · 07/11/2023 00:31

@millonthedentalfloss agreed! They seem a real liability for food prep (amongst other things 🤢<not envy).

Zwicky · 07/11/2023 00:34

Absolutely hate them. Short painted nails I just don’t like but long natural or gel nails make me shudder. I much prefer toenails to be painted though #contrary.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:36

@Zwicky Uggh don't even get me started on feet I don't need to see anyone's toes at all thank you very much!

I think they are good to look at, but so unhygienic. No amount of hand washing really gets them clean.

I think most of them look hideous, like witches talons. Also the way they are painted different colours with gems etc. It reminds me of when I experimented with nail polish aged 13! I see very few that look nice. Much prefer shorter, tidy nails, varnished or natural.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:44

@10HailMarys I'm not sneering, I'm saying I think they look gross and unclean, which they are and they gross me out.

"In a study released at the Infectious Disease Society of America meeting in San Francisco, researchers found that artificial and natural nails longer than 3 millimeters beyond the tip of the finger, or the length of a pencil tip, carry more harmful bacteria and yeast under them than short nails.
A number of deadly, infectious outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units that were linked to long nails prompted the research.
The fingernails of 18 health-care workers were tested. Results showed that all of the workers with long nails harbored bacteria and yeast compared to 18 percent of those with short nails.
Two germs found under many of the workers nails were Klebsiella, a bacteria that can cause pneumonia and urinary tract infections, and Candida parapsilosis, a yeast that can cause wound and blood stream infections."

Yikes 😱🤮

It's funny that you should post this...a colleague was only telling us today, about having to pick up after her OH dog and her nails pierced the poo bag!

Each to their own, they're not for me, but I don't dislike them on others.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:49

@Loopzy Grim, just imagine what happens when they are "cleaning up" after themselves too!

I have short nails but just as much crud gets under them from baking, cleaning, gardening, etc as people with really long nails would get. So it's not the hygiene aspect for me. The practicality of doing some things with uber long nails, I do find baffling.

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 01:04

@MarieKlepto But they tested long nails vs short nails and the long nails all had bacteria and yeasts under them that short nails didn't given basic hand hygiene. Long nails are dirty and unhygienic. But yes the are also impractical.

I have short gels. And go for a clean look like french or block painted. I dont like acrylics myself and that tapping on the keyboard drives me crazy,.

i prefer old money look.

penjil · 07/11/2023 01:17

I just don't know how they can do simple every day tasks with long nails.

Even tapping on a mobile phone screen must be difficult, or even holding cutlery properly.

And as for wiping your bum....

MarieKlepto · 07/11/2023 01:20

I haven't seen that @millonthedentalfloss Interesting. Must admit I am a bit of a handwasher (Covid advice was my daily life!)

pearliepencil · 07/11/2023 01:28

My nails have started to grow super long recently (possibly combination of supplements or HRT). I have to file down one unbreakable nail down frequently or it looks ridiculous. I like them long now, but, my, it's tedious to maintain, and I use a glass file daily.

I did notice, when they first started growing, that they attracted fibres and so on underneath, so now I'm paranoid and always use a nail brush. I couldn't manage with those nails that are thick though. Very impractical?

pearliepencil · 07/11/2023 01:30

I don't understand acrylic toenails. Though I occasionally do pointe classes and can imagine the pain of them digging in.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 07/11/2023 01:51

YANBU - they look like talons and give me the ick too.
