to not like long, painted "done" nails?

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:25

They give me the heebie jeebies or rather gross me out. Short nails even if painted are tolerable although I prefer no polish at all but gel nails, long nails, stick on nails, acrylic nails are all just .... shudder.

If I am at a deli and someone getting the food has long nails it totally puts me off. I can't watch Mary Berry and her long nails touch the food she makes, its definitely unsanitary. I know so many women spend a fortune doing their nails and take great pride in it but I will never understand why because I find them so grim.

Is anyone else like this?

It's not wrong to not like something

It's wrong to judge someone as inferior just because you don't like something

But it's bloody stupid to not let people say they don't like something - it says something about the security of people if they can't tolerate other people not liking what they do

sweetpickle23 · 07/11/2023 10:41

Fine to not like long nails, but some of the snobbery and classism on this thread is disgusting- suggesting that if you have long nails you are stupid or of a lower class says more about you than anyone with long nails.

Also feels like a lot of women can't wait to stick the boot and judge how other women choose to live their lives- whether it's nails, or botox, or hair extensions, or whatever. It's really sad.

@Itsnotchristmasyet How can someone be jealous of someone who looks like they would not want to look themselves?? I am baffled at this. What are they jealous of exactly?

I have seen people out and about who I think look absolutely ridiculous. Am I jealous for feeling like that? Or is it OK because I just think it and don't tell anyone? Or am I still a jealous horrid person because I think "you'd look better in something else?"

Of course it's a free country to wear and look how you want. It doesn't mean you are jealous if you don't like something!

It depends how nasty you are about it.

I don’t like short nails.
I can’t even look at nails that look like they’ve been bitten.

But I don’t judge women who do have short nails or bite them.
And I would never be nasty about it.

You can dislike something but if you’re judgemental or nasty, then it’s because it’s deeper than just not liking something and it’s usually because of jealousy.

Perhaps deep down you know you couldn’t pull it off or because you don’t have the confidence to wear something that makes you stand out.

Men rarely judge other men on what they wear.
Some women seem to do it all the time and are comfortable saying so on here.

I agree @sweetpickle23 The snobbery and classism on this thread is disgusting, and does say more about the people making the comments. There's a similar thread currently running about lip filler.

The vitriol of some of the comments is no doubt the sort of thing that gives Mumsnet a bad name for being unsupportive (which I don't think is entirely true, but understandable seeing threads like this).

I completely agree.

There seems to be a new thread every week, about how women dress or what they choose to do and several posters jump at the chance to be bitchy and judgemental about it.

I still laugh at the hooped earrings thread, where OP just wanted some nice hooped earrings and some posters were falling over themselves to be rude to her, calling her chavy, classless, tacky etc it was mad!
They went quiet though when posters started naming famous people who wear hoops, including Kate Middleton.

FucksSakeSusan · 07/11/2023 11:17

You might see the benefit when (if) you hit the peri-menopause itching. Acrylics stop you from scratching and breaking the skin - I don't understand why but they do. After always having short nails, I became a total convert at that point and would have them done all the time if I could afford it.

I agree that they have the potential to be full of germs and ick but I regularly used a nail brush. You get used to doing stuff with the longer nails over time too.

Whichwhatnow · 07/11/2023 11:20

My friend openly admits she has her nails done so customers can't see the dirt under them. She's a caterer. So yes they make me feel quite 🤢

I did this when I was a barrista & you're dealing with ground coffee & fine chocolate powders with short & long nails. You can't wash your hands between taking someone's order, making their order & then handing them their order (assuming no allergies etc). So yeah, that splash of hot chocolate or dribble of coffee you just burned yourself with gets wiped off, not scrubbed. Not even run under cold water for the burn...

A few hot chocolates in a row & you're easily looking like you've been digging in the garden. Varnish helps your hands look presentable to the customer.

She's not hiding actual dirt, fgs, you just cannot wash your hands every couple of minutes in catering, it's not possible. Length of nail is irrelevant.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 07/11/2023 11:59

I don't like them either. Heebie jeebies is the term I use too. And when they tap on screens 😱 I'm
Autistic though and I think it's a sensory thing since a young child but combined with my nurse training it's now a dirty thing too.

Sartre · 07/11/2023 12:00

I have mine painted with gel because it lasts longer than usual polish. My nails are fairly short and filed so they look smart, I just have one plain colour on them all so I think it looks ok. I have had acrylics in the past, you get used to them but they are annoying at first.

I don’t like the long pointy acrylics, they remind me of witches fingers.

Should have been more clear - when I say caterer I mean she bakes cakes and pastries and delivers. And she has told me that the reason is that she doesn't want customers to see the dirt (her words!). This isn't coffee or whatever, it's literally dirt (I know her well enough to know this is true, obviously not saying everyone working in cafes or whatever are the same!)

Thank you for the clarification 😊. That is indeed grim AF

Hilarious.

I’m a straight A* student and a teacher, I consistently get positive feedback from parents, seems you would hate me teaching your child!

Vettrianofan · 07/11/2023 13:54

As opposed to short bitten nails 🤪

Is it only white women who are to be accused of being dirty, or will the haters on the thread confirm that their unpleasant comments are to be directed at women who may well feel that this is yet another example of daily racism?

How on earth is this about racism? It's about overly long fake nails whoever they are on!

I haven’t even considered or thought about the colour of the women.

As you have, you’re the one being racist

Eh? What are you saying - that's OK to hate long nails on white women but ONLY white women because if you feel the exact same way about all women it's racist? Do you really think that makes sense?

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/11/2023 15:29

Are so this is where the spiteful posters are hanging out atm. I don't like short hair on women, at all, but I don't feel the need to spout poison on the subject. Each to their own. I'm sure some of you have things we would all judge/disapprove of but some posters on here sound so awful it's embarrassing.

GodDammitCecil · 07/11/2023 17:37

I don’t understand why people can see what a thread is about, and then come onto it, purely to get upset and take offense. It doesn’t make any sense.

You can shut the thread down, but you’re not going to shut anyone’s thinking down. Lots of people will still be walking around disliking long nails.

If you like them, surely that’s all that matters. Who cares if some people don’t like them or are even sneery about them?

I do think being moved to start a thread about them is a bit odd. But then again, I think many threads on here are a bit odd.

We all do stuff other people think is strange. Who cares?!

HerMammy · 07/11/2023 17:42

@Itsnotchristmasyet

The spiteful nasty comments are the ugly thing here not lips, nails etc
The beloved KM they all fawn over isn't shy of some help with her appearance either 🤣

Disturbia81 · 07/11/2023 17:49

Togekiss · 07/11/2023 02:24

I always laugh at these threads, as someone who spent many years with long acrylics (and the only reason I no longer have them is because I kept snapping them in work due to the job being “hands on”).

Having acrylics is just as sanitary as having short nails. You still wash your hands. If anything your nails are typically “cleaner” day to day as you can’t use your nails in the same way as you would short, natural nails. If your nails are dirty then you aren’t washing your hands enough!

It takes a day or two to get used to typing with them but it’s a very easy adjustment. You end up angling your finger tips slightly flatter- that’s all there is to it.

And regarding the “wiping your bum” comments… I don’t know about you but I’ve never needed my nails to wipe my arse… you hold the paper at a slightly different angle. Never ever had any “accidents” in that regard.

So what this thread really comes down to is personal preference and snobbery, really.

You don’t have to like them. As I said, the only reason I no longer have them is because they do, unfortunately, have a higher chance of cracking if you have them over a certain length and you use your hands a lot day to day. And sometimes that crack can be quite far down your nail bed, which is agonising. It can take a few months for the “crack” to grow out.

That is a perfectly valid reason for not liking them, unlike a lot of what has been aforementioned on this thread.

It would be really lovely if women could support other women’s’ choices to do whatever they like to their bodies, though. What nails someone has, what colour their hair is, what tattoos you have, etc- it’s really none of your business. You don’t have to like it but you also don’t need to make shitty little threads online trying to bring people down for something that clearly makes them feel good about themselves.

It just shows you to be a very judgemental, snobbish person. Certainly not someone I’d want to associate with.

This 🙌🏼

I love mine. I don't judge short nails. Mine are cleaner than they used to be short as like this poster says I can't use them to scratch/itch etc, stuff doesn't get under them.

coldcallerbaiter · 07/11/2023 17:56

Any very long nails are creepy and are not elegant.

I like either short to medium gel nails, or just plain short nails.

Gel nails with just one colour do look put together and elegant but not when
they are long. I do not like acrylics or jewel arty ones.

classic simple elegant.

Its why I do not like any tattoosand lots of piercings too, they just cheapen your look.

Wotsitfappe · 07/11/2023 18:11

You absolutely are sneering op if you are going to do it at least own it.

I don't have nails like this but have seen various videos of women showing how they do day to day things and keep clean with long nails.

slithytoveisascientist · 07/11/2023 20:21

Oganesson118 · 07/11/2023 09:56

I don't like super long ones as they just get in the way but you can have acrylic or gel without them needing to be talons. Mine are maybe 5mm from the fingertip? But I've got crappy short nail beds so they look a bit shit otherwise.

They sound exactly like mine - such short nail beds after decades of biting that if I have them finger tip length they look stupidly short and squat

to not like long, painted "done" nails?
