to not like long, painted "done" nails?

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:25

They give me the heebie jeebies or rather gross me out. Short nails even if painted are tolerable although I prefer no polish at all but gel nails, long nails, stick on nails, acrylic nails are all just .... shudder.

If I am at a deli and someone getting the food has long nails it totally puts me off. I can't watch Mary Berry and her long nails touch the food she makes, its definitely unsanitary. I know so many women spend a fortune doing their nails and take great pride in it but I will never understand why because I find them so grim.

Is anyone else like this?

@Togekiss - and everyone on the thread actually = EVERYONE is "judgemental" as you put it as we all have preferences. I am sure there are fashion statements that you don't like, so that makes you judgemental, too. I just don't get this.

Or is it just unacceptable to voice these and everyone should keep them to themselves? What do you do if your friend asked you how they looked when they went out and you thought they looked terrible? I'd suggest a different outfit, personally, that I thought they looked better in.

So what is it? We shouldn't have any preferences or we are allowed to but we shouldn't talk about them? Just so we are all un-sneery and worthy of having friends?

I think the tide is turning thou !!
I have recently gone back natural and I have noticed lots more people wearing bare nails they just look so fresh and clean !

AzureBlue99 · 07/11/2023 09:14

@Itsnotchristmasyet How can women saying they don't like long nails, false or otherwise, be jealous. Anyone can have them. If you can't grow them, you can buy them. No jealousy. We all have likes and dislikes. I like a clean aesthetic and certain things like false nails, heavy makeup up, sharpie eyebrows, and tattoos fall into that. I just don't like a drawn on manufactured look.

TeslaTwat · 07/11/2023 09:18

@happyl yeah it's too much. Also means £60 a month on nails. What a twat! After three weeks they start to look ratty and if I have them every three weeks, it's still twice in one monthly salary so I decided every two weeks is best.

well it's your money and if it gives you joy and you've got the time for it! Grin

Love smart short gel nails in classic or plain colours. I used to get them done every two weeks before working where I do now, which doesn’t permit them for hygiene reasons. As soon as I’m on A/L I get them done!

Completely agree about handling food etc with long acrylics in regards to hygiene.

FriendsReunited · 07/11/2023 09:26

Yanbu, they’re so ugly. Seem to be part of a trend of women trying to look like a plastic doll.

EllaWallace · 07/11/2023 09:28

Personally I could never have them because I am phobic about nails bending backwards, the thought of it makes me queasy. Plus I live in the country, do lots of gardening, and have two small children, so it just wouldn’t be practical for my lifestyle.
However, loads of people have a different lifestyle and look to me, and if having long nails is part of that, then I think it’s great. When I see someone who clearly takes a lot of time on their appearance and has long shiny nails I think - wow, fair play. There’s no way I could maintain that.

fearfuloffluff · 07/11/2023 09:33

You're right, they're minging.

froomeonthebroom · 07/11/2023 09:34

A couple of the women who work in my local specsavers have long gel, highly decorated, nails. It puts me off going there even though they wouldn't be anywhere near my eyes. I just think it looks unprofessional in what is, at its essence, a health care setting.

LakeTiticaca · 07/11/2023 09:34

Anyone working on an open food prep setting should NOT be wearing false nails. They should be reported to environmental health

dottiedodah · 07/11/2023 09:46

Agree ,I always thought short nails were needed for food prep anyway.I find long nails a pain TBH. Mine are short and I like them that way!

Blueandpinklampshades · 07/11/2023 09:47

They are not to my taste either, I think they look incredibly cheap and witchy and unhygienic. Especially when people show them off on social media by doing that weird claw hand thing.

My OH calls them 'mole nails' and now I can't help but think that when I see them.

Each to their own though and they probably contribute millions to the beauty economy.

Look at Barry White's wife. This was in the days before acrylic nails 😱

YIKES! 😱

TheGoogleMum · 07/11/2023 09:50

Oh I hate long nails they creep me out too! For me the worst thing about eurovision this year was so many of the acts having long painted nails. Ugh. Admittedly my nails never look nice as I pick them and keep them short and don't paint them, I had them done for my wedding but I still kept them quite short as I really don't like the look of long ones!

Always making sure that the premium car brand is showing in the background of the claw pic.

There is a young woman very early 20s I'd say works in our staff cafe. She's got these long plastic nails, (not gels on her own nails), hugely inflated lips and extremely thick, long fake eyelashes. She draws a lot of attention. I don't know how much this stuff costs (I do have gel nails myself but they aren't long and my friend does them) but she can't earn a massive amount.

Bluevelvetsofa · 07/11/2023 09:53

Of course, each to his own, unless it’s for hygiene reasons in a food or health care setting.

I don’t like to see very bitten nails either, which sometimes happens on cooking shows. I think they must also be unhygienic because of being in the mouth so much. Especially those bitten down to the quick and ragged.

CesareBorgia · 07/11/2023 09:55

I'm squeamish about nails - I can't bear to do anything with mine other than clip them once a week.

Oganesson118 · 07/11/2023 09:56

I don't like super long ones as they just get in the way but you can have acrylic or gel without them needing to be talons. Mine are maybe 5mm from the fingertip? But I've got crappy short nail beds so they look a bit shit otherwise.

You can have likes and dislikes as everyone does but the vitriol shown on these sorts of threads by some posters, shows that there is something deeper going on.

And usually when women judge other women it’s out of jealousy.

isthismylifenow · 07/11/2023 10:07

I don't mind the look of them if someone likes it.

What I can't abide is when someone subjects others to the sound of them. I know I may sound extreme but I am very noise sensitive. If someone on sm or tiktok is wanting to review a products, why oh why must they tap the box with the clicking nails.... It is not a natural sound either, its like plastic onto plastic or cardboard.

I makes me block that person instantly and they just keep coming unfortunately.

Same if I go somewhere and someone is clicking their phone screen or their keyboard. Same thing to my as scratching polystyrene sound or screeching of chalk on a board.

Enjoy your nails if that is what you like. But please don't be sharing them with me.

gotomomo · 07/11/2023 10:08

The only ugly thing here I read is intolerant and judgemental people. It's a free country, wear makeup/don't wear makeup, have fake tan/don't, have long nails/don't your choice. I personally have fairly short painted nails because I think they look nicer than crumbly unpainted ones, my choice and I'm frequently complimented on them, including people not realising they are gel because they are not long.

gotomomo · 07/11/2023 10:09

If I have to handle food at work (rare) I wear gloves as do every one

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 10:15

@Itsnotchristmasyet How can someone be jealous of someone who looks like they would not want to look themselves?? I am baffled at this. What are they jealous of exactly?

I have seen people out and about who I think look absolutely ridiculous. Am I jealous for feeling like that? Or is it OK because I just think it and don't tell anyone? Or am I still a jealous horrid person because I think "you'd look better in something else?"

Of course it's a free country to wear and look how you want. It doesn't mean you are jealous if you don't like something!
