to not like long, painted "done" nails?

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:25

They give me the heebie jeebies or rather gross me out. Short nails even if painted are tolerable although I prefer no polish at all but gel nails, long nails, stick on nails, acrylic nails are all just .... shudder.

If I am at a deli and someone getting the food has long nails it totally puts me off. I can't watch Mary Berry and her long nails touch the food she makes, its definitely unsanitary. I know so many women spend a fortune doing their nails and take great pride in it but I will never understand why because I find them so grim.

Is anyone else like this?

Botox , lash extensions or eyebrow threads are not accused of belittling women despite the disgust at wrinkles or thinner hair and the promotion of the concept that looking young is essential

But express disgust at long nails and observe the hygiene is more difficult and it's women bashing ?

Naw - that's your sensitivity showing

Someone has to look at you too, if they find your face disgusting to look at theyre ok to sneer and grimace at you then start a cunty thread on the Internet about it then? Maybe stay at home if someone’s nails triggers you so much?

Grow up

Caerulea · 07/11/2023 08:17

Fwiw, if you have longer nails (naturally or otherwise) for a good period of time, the nail bed grows up to the tip of your finger to support the length. It actually makes them easier to clean cos the underside is exposed & there's no recess. Obvs you still need to make the effort to clean them. When they are shorter, that recedes back & getting stuff under there requires more scrubbing & digging cos it's now a crevice. Obvs ymmv.

It's fine not to like stuff but a lot of you sound like you just want to say 'it's classless' & that says more about you than that the person who paints their nails.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/11/2023 08:17

I’ve had long (natural) nails in the past, but I don’t like them at all now, especially if they’re fake. I keep mine quite short now, with just clear polish.

I’ve long noticed that models in most clothes/make up etc. ads will have fairly short, natural looking nails.

Conkersinautumn · 07/11/2023 08:19

Still too uncanny valley, its fake. It makes people uncomfortable. I get the piss taken for my fake hair, others their unnaturally long lashes.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 07/11/2023 08:22

I think they look gross, but ugh, the tappy tappy sound people with long nails seem to love to make. Just makes me feel sick, tapping the screen when serving me in a shop or tap tap on their phone. Even worse is those annoying influences who bloody tap every product they hold up, I can't watch!!

One of my colleagues has long nails and the sound of the tapping on the keyboard makes me want to throw up, thankfully we only work in the same office a handful of times a year.

Whatdidtheromanseverdoforus · 07/11/2023 08:25

Totally agree. My fb feed often Treats me to lots of ‘fresh nails’ post where someone’s had plastic glued to the ends of their fingers and painted some garish colour and then garnished with glitter or something. I thought I was being an old fart when my reaction was ‘yuck! How on Earth are you wiping your kids arses and cleaning your house properly with this set up?’ But it’s very common among the generation of lip fillers and hair extension types. Remember, no one makes any money out of natural beauty so there’s a huge effort to sell this cosmetic ideology to young women.

WoollyBat · 07/11/2023 08:31

I’ve never, ever understood it at all! I don’t really judge people for doing it, it’s up to them and I don’t find it disgusting really but just why? You’re making yourself look like you have claws, and you’re disabling yourself. Why is it considered attractive? I do like nail polish because I love colour, but you can have the colour without the claws … Confused

But I feel a bit the same about stilettos. Why would I want my feet to look like that, all pointy and sharp, and make it harder to walk? I know it’s just arbitrary beauty norms but I’m mystified. I know about the feminist stuff about women being more desirable when they are weakened/helpless. But loads of beauty norms don’t involve that.

False nails, false lips, false eye lashes, you name it, all really tacky and grim.

I instantly take a dislike to women who have these. These people are not my people.

Tacky and smacks of low intellect in my view.

flaxentoad · 07/11/2023 08:35

I can't bear my nails when they grow past the tip of my finger. I don't know why, but it drives me crazy!

I used to just cut them super short with nail clippers, but lately I have taken to filing them right down and leaving a bit of "white" at the end of my nail. But never, ever longer than my finger tips!

I am actually surprised by how fast my nails grow. They aren't strong or anything, but they do grow fast.

Sholkedabemus · 07/11/2023 08:39

Yes I find nails gross. I like them short and neat. Long toe nails are even worse. 🤮

flaxentoad · 07/11/2023 08:48

This is another reason I have gone off nail polish! I am not sure there is a truly safe one on the market.

Duke-EWG Study Finds Toxic Nail Polish Chemical In Women’s Bodies | Environmental Working Group

"Researchers at Duke University and Environmental Working Group have found evidence of a suspected endocrine-disrupting chemical widely used in popular nail polishes in the bodies of more than two-dozen women who participated in a biomonitoring study.

The study, published today in Environment International, found that all women had a metabolite of triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, in their bodies just 10 to 14 hours after painting their nails.

“It is very troubling that nail polish being marketed to women and teenage girls contains a suspected endocrine disruptor,” said Johanna Congleton, Ph.D., MSPH, a senior scientist at EWG and co-author of the Duke-EWG study."

The post is not sneering at anyone. It is expressing the OPs dislike of acrylic nails.

JamSandle · 07/11/2023 08:51

Not a fan either. Not sure how or why it became so popular.

Zebedee55 · 07/11/2023 08:51

Medium length gel Polish nails are fine. Those really long acrylic nails must be really hard to manage with doing everyday stuff. But, each to their own.

Much better than grubby, unpolished, unmanicured nails...bleugh!

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 08:52

Lol at all the long nailed women who are offended, Sorry but at the very least they are unhygienic and otherwise opinions on how they look are personal taste but you must admit that knowledge of how dirty they are feeds into how other people will see them. If you are happy with them fine but don't kid yourself on they are not harbouring all sorts of nasty stuff.

Look at Barry White's wife. This was in the days before acrylic nails 😱

@Chloes98xx I think you're on the wrong thread.

slithytoveisascientist · 07/11/2023 08:55

How can you tell the difference between short nails whether they are gel, polish, or acrylic?

happyl · 07/11/2023 08:57

TeslaTwat · 07/11/2023 07:33

I have acrylics and they look extremely classy. They're a nice length and usually a classic colour. It means I don't have to do anything to them myself apart from a bi weekly appointment to get them changed. You wouldn't get heeby Jeebys looking at them.

That being said, they shouldn't be allowed for anyone working in food service or healthcare because they are quite vile. If I leave it over two weeks, my natural nail becomes ever so slightly separated from the acrylic and it's impossible to clean down there.

a bi weekly appointment? See; that's way too high maintenance for nails. I don't know where I'd find the time!

Nice…

Deadringer · 07/11/2023 09:01

My dds get fancy nails on sometimes and they are pretty, but the really long ones freak me out a bit. How do they wipe their arse, what if their eye or anywhere delicate is itchy in their sleep, if they have a young baby how to they manage? My nails grow really quickly and are a nice shape, but they annoy me when they get long so I keep them trimmed.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/11/2023 09:02

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:27

@crispcreambun Sure just don't touch any food with them!

Why are their nails less sanitary than their fingers? Both touching your food, both washed or unwashed equally.

But aesthetically they're not for me. I rarely think they look better than not on, esp when they're pointy or they don't fill the nail width
