to not like long, painted "done" nails?

millonthedentalfloss · 07/11/2023 00:25

They give me the heebie jeebies or rather gross me out. Short nails even if painted are tolerable although I prefer no polish at all but gel nails, long nails, stick on nails, acrylic nails are all just .... shudder.

If I am at a deli and someone getting the food has long nails it totally puts me off. I can't watch Mary Berry and her long nails touch the food she makes, its definitely unsanitary. I know so many women spend a fortune doing their nails and take great pride in it but I will never understand why because I find them so grim.

Is anyone else like this?

@slithytoveisascientist Yep mine are due to biting for a long time too.

cannaecookrisotto · 07/11/2023 20:26

I can't have them as they hinder my keyboard slapping but each to their own.

If they make somebody feel nice about themselves then who gives a shiny shite what other people do with their nails.

What's with all the threads lately bashing lifestyle choices of other women? There was the lips one as well.

Do people really give that much of a fuck about a set of nails that they "shudder" at the sight of them?
Jesus wept.

Any very long nails are creepy and are not elegant.

I like either short to medium gel nails, or just plain short nails.

Gel nails with just one colour do look put together and elegant but not when
they are long. I do not like acrylics or jewel arty ones.

classic simple elegant.

Its why I do not like any tattoosand lots of piercings too, they just cheapen your look.

Why do we need to look "elegant?" That's just a societal expectation of women that I don't particularly want to adhere to.

StopWastingTimeOnMN · 07/11/2023 20:29

I don’t find them attractive either - quite the opposite - especially if accompanied by excessive hand movements to ‘show them off’ 🤢 or even worse…tapping 🤮.

ladeluge · 07/11/2023 20:32

Whatever floats your boat I say. However I have never had my nails "done" in my life. I just keep them clean, trimmed, and filed into a neat shape. The only time I paint them is if going to a wedding, then it's just Dior nail glow, which is lovely ( course I would say that!). Primark now do a decent knock off and I have a bottle handy if I am going somewhere glam.

Toenails I don't like, hence I go away in the Winter so I don't need flip flops ha ha.

GiantToblerone · 07/11/2023 20:37

They don’t bother me. I paint my nails myself, but keep them fairly short. Doesn’t bother me if others like them long. It can look pretty.

Vettrianofan · 07/11/2023 21:01

Nicer than looking at bitten finger nails and I say that as someone who still bites their nails!

MeinKraft · 07/11/2023 21:13

Blueandpinklampshades · 07/11/2023 09:47

They are not to my taste either, I think they look incredibly cheap and witchy and unhygienic. Especially when people show them off on social media by doing that weird claw hand thing.

My OH calls them 'mole nails' and now I can't help but think that when I see them.

Each to their own though and they probably contribute millions to the beauty economy.

Sadly some people who use nail bars (whether their nails are long or short!) will be inadvertently contributing to organised crime rather than the economy. Nail bars are notorious for being run by gangs as a civilised front to enable money laundering, human trafficking and modern slavery.

Twilight7777 · 07/11/2023 21:16

I’m surprised the lady with the nails has been allowed to serve or prepare food, as it is a health risk with false/long nails, especially acrylic overlays as they are not easy to keep clean. I’d probably report to health and safety.

I like elegant men too

notquiteruralbliss · 07/11/2023 21:25

I dislike them. But I generally dislike anything artificial looking or try hard like those weird slug eyebrows or botoxed lips. No issue with tattoos though, if they are done well.

Spirro · 07/11/2023 21:30

Long painted nails are very impractical. I don’t know how people manage not to ruin them? I’ve had my nails done before - then I bathed the dog, hand washed some clothes, scrubbed the toilet, weeded the garden, washed the car, peeled some sellotape to wrap a parcel - and by that time I’d broken at least two nails and half the polish had chipped off.

Elegant mentioned three times. How odd. You're obsessed with elegance but sound anything but.

like your oddly personal comment then….

ClockworkDisaster · 07/11/2023 22:29

Like others have said the tapping of them goes right through me. I’m not opposed to painted/gel nails though. Just talons.

Many years ago I put fake nails (from the supermarket) on to go as a witch to a Halloween party. It rendered me utterly useless. I couldn’t grab my trousers properly to pull them on 🤦‍♀️ then spent the whole evening unable to go for a wee as if by some miracle I would be able to get my trousers down, I might not be able to get them back up again and I didn’t want to wander round the party with my trousers around my ankles looking for help…..

This is why I love builder gel, I can do all those things and not a chip, plus my nails are kept strong

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 09:04

@Togekiss - and everyone on the thread actually = EVERYONE is "judgemental" as you put it as we all have preferences. I am sure there are fashion statements that you don't like, so that makes you judgemental, too. I just don't get this.

Or is it just unacceptable to voice these and everyone should keep them to themselves? What do you do if your friend asked you how they looked when they went out and you thought they looked terrible? I'd suggest a different outfit, personally, that I thought they looked better in.

So what is it? We shouldn't have any preferences or we are allowed to but we shouldn't talk about them? Just so we are all un-sneery and worthy of having friends?

You can have preferences but there’s a huge difference between saying

“It’s not for me personally”
and
”It’s tacky and disgusting and the person who has them is thick”

Some people seem to get confused between having an opinion and being breathtakingly rude.

It’s funny, though. People like yourself say “well if someone asked I’d tell them the truth”, like being rude and blunt is something to be proud of. However, I guarantee if your boss asked you “do you like my nails I got done at the weekend?” in passing conversation, you sure as hell would not say “no they’re tacky and disgusting”. You’d sit there and say “they’re lovely”, because you wouldn’t want to upset someone who you respect and can influence your career.

It’s just interesting how easy it is to turn on and off your “opinions” when it suits. It’s very easy to be rude online, yet not so easy to be rude in person.

So, yes, I do think if your first reaction is to be rude and nasty about something that clearly brings someone some joy in their life, having you as a friend of mine wouldn’t be for me at all. I tend to associate myself with people who support others’ decisions to do things that bring them joy (obviously as long as it isn’t hurting anyone/is illegal, etc).

AzureBlue99 · 09/11/2023 08:22

Of course people damp down their opinions face to face versus online. You might think it but never say it in person. Online is where you can truly express what you feel. As long as it isn't illegal or racist or homophobic etc, why not. If you have long nails and someone has called you tacky, you can choose to disregard it.

Yeah, totally fine to be a nasty cow about people for no reason as long as it's not racist or homophobic. 🙄

JoanThursday1972 · 10/11/2023 09:44

There's a big difference between actually saying you think false nails are tacky and saying that Freda across the road is tacky because she has them.

And @Togekiss I actually DIDN'T say I'd be blunt. I said that if someone asked me about their outfit (if they were getting ready to go out) I'd say that I thought the blue dress would look better or a variation thereof. So why you say "People like yourself say “well if someone asked I’d tell them the truth” I don't know, because I didn't say that at all.

2023forme · 10/11/2023 09:59

IMHO very long nails are a more modern version of having a year round deep suntan in the 50s/60s - a sign of wealth that you could afford to fly to exotic sunny climes.

ultra long nails as favoured by female rap stars, Kardashian’s etc are a sign they don’t need to do “hard work” or household chores etc. no way could you do all the baby/house stuff/“normal job” stuff with those sort of nails - paid help can do that.

then the long nail preference gets copied by others and becomes a fashion.

And another way of keeping women forking out to the beauty industry to ensure they fit a certain aesthetic. Same as those who say they got a boob job “for me” - no one needs bigger boobs - it’s because they promoted a certain way of appealing to the male gaze that women felt they needed implants “for confidence”. Although at least getting false nails doesn’t come with a risk of death or disfigurement I suppose.

so yeah, it’s a no from me.
