Stingy friend send wrong wrong money

Rossannah · 29/10/2023 23:15

I have just been away with a friend for 2 nights. An event plus hotel. Cost for the two altogether was £416. I paid for both on my card and told friend to send £200 for her share. She said she would send this weekend, after the event. This was fine.
We went, had a good time. Whilst there, we spent equally. We drank and ate the same. Sometimes paid by round, sometimes separate for eg in a prepay cafe. I don't feel I spent or took any more than my fair share, friend never moaned.
I reckon I spent around £180 in fuel, no mention of this was made, no arrangement for half to be paid by friend and I would have gone alone and spent the same so I was not bothered about paying for fuel myself.
On the way home we stopped at a garage. I filled up the tank, paid at the pump. Friend went in the petrol station and asked if I wanted anything. I gave her an order from subway which was in there, sandwich and drink and some boiled sweets.
We then got on the way. Nice time had by all.
Tonight, she messaged to say she's sent the money she owed. I check and she's put in £290(£90 too much) I reply to say I've got it but it's not what we agreed, confused face, kisses etc ( I did not expect her to pay for petrol) she then goes off on a rant about how she paid for my subway when she went in the petrol station and I didn't offer her any money for it and I was cheeky to expect her to pay for my food. I realised then she had meant to send £190 but has got it wrong.
I wonder how to approach this error given her rudeness and cheekiness over a bloody tenner! Considering I've spent on petrol.
Should I leave it until she realises let her come crawling? Refund her the £100 or £90 as agreed ? No idea. So shocked at her stinginess

I cannot edit the title, I can see the error, haha ironic

As this didn't go down so well with most folk I suspect she'd toddled off to name change.

Yes probably. Really annoying though.

MyMiniMetro · 31/10/2023 14:04

That is all kinds of confused.

So she meant to send £200 and took £10 off for the sandwich and sweets. But she thought she was sending £190 and actually sent £290.

The extra money does cover her share of the petrol so I would just leave it. As others have said, if she picks up on it act innocent and say isn't that your half of the petrol cost? Let her say 'no I wasn't going to give you anything for petrol.' If she dare. If she does then you can reply 'well thank you for changing your mind and leaving it at that.'

Your friend really needs to apologize for getting arsey about a £10 sandwich. If she doesn't your friendship is over.

Cerealkiller4U · 31/10/2023 14:17

Oh. This could be a very fun thread!

momtoboys · 31/10/2023 14:25

I keep looking for an update when she realizes her mistake!

HoHoHoliday · 31/10/2023 15:18

I don't think the OP is returning and I wouldn't be surprised is this was a fake post. So many of the comments are written in the same style - lots of "I can't wait to see what she says next" about a fairly mundane text conversation, all just a bit robotic. Either a bot or the OP replying themselves under a lot of name changes.

RoamSeeker · 31/10/2023 15:40

I think this too…especially if you didn’t say “thank you, I’ve got it!”
I personally would of put thank you so much for the petrol contribution I really appreciate it.
then even if it was a mistake she would probably feel too awkward to say (because she should contribute)
Just seems like miscommunication to me.

Manadou · 31/10/2023 16:20

Let's say £7 per gallon, £180 would buy 25.7 gallons, and some Range Rover do 26 mpg on a good day, which is about 668 miles there and back, or 334 each way, that's like Exeter to Newcastle

GimmeSleep · 31/10/2023 16:27

DoughBallss · 31/10/2023 10:56

Question is though how did you spend £180 on fuel that’s like 2.5 tanks/1250 miles in my Golf?!

Edited

You know not all cars have the same engine/mpg?

Hey @Rossannah where are you 😥

MinnieL · 31/10/2023 17:08

OP what sort of cliff hanger is this seriously?!

Jem123456789 · 31/10/2023 17:27

Don’t refund anything. See if she asks!

DoughBallss · 31/10/2023 17:33

@GimmeSleep Exactly why I mentioned what car I have for comparison you muppet

cassy16 · 31/10/2023 17:46

After her reaction I’d 100% take the half for the fuel and say here’s your tenner for the subway it was nice knowing ya 🖕🏼

Sureaseggs44 · 31/10/2023 18:12

HoHoHoliday · 29/10/2023 23:31

"I realised then she had meant to send £190 but has got it wrong."

What makes you think this? Did she say herself that she meant to send £190 but got it wrong or have you assumed?
It looks to me as though you agreed £200 for half of the event/hotel and she's added another £90 for half of the petrol.
You've then complained, and implied that she should pay more, so she has argued back to point out she paid for your subway.
Sounds like a miscommunication to me.
But since she's aid you for her share of everything you should pay her for your subway.

This is what I thought , and if that’s the case you might be accusing her wrongly . Sometimes it’s important to get the facts right . You could be jumping to conclusions .

Shutthefrontdoor99 · 31/10/2023 18:46

Seriously waiting with baited breath for OP for give us an update on when the 'friend' realises the 100 quid mistake.

And definitely don't give it back. I'm the same as you - I wouldn't have mentioned the petrol if I was going anyways and was going to spend that amount on petrol whether they were coming or not. I would have also rounded it to £200 even if their half was exactly £208. But if the friend is being tetchy over £10 subway, I would be as petty as possible and draw a line over thie 'friendship'. Adults really don't need this added stress in their life from friends when workloads/bosses/work colleagues/families/partners/kids are already mandatory stresses that you have to deal with. People are friends by choice. Choose different friends I'm afraid.

Perfect!

This!

or… she could have meant to send you £290 but thought you were getting arsey cos you expected £300. How do you know she definitely sent the wrong money?

greenacrylicpaint · 31/10/2023 20:59

keep the money and block her.
she's no friend.

AppropriateAdult · 31/10/2023 21:52

"Just back from a weekend away with a friend. She paid for everything on her card, so on the way home I asked her how much I owed her. She gave me a figure which covered the event and the hotel, but I knew she'd spent a lot on petrol as well so I transferred an extra £90 to her for that, which should have more than covered it. Then she texted me that I hadn't sent her the right amount?! I wouldn't mind, but I'd even bought her lunch on the way home as well. Cheeky mare..."

Dumb friend was meant to send £200 that's what the op asked for instead the dumb arse sends her £290 by mistake. Op was going to talk to her about the extra £90 and then dumb arse friend thinking she only paid £190 told her she bought her subway and took £10 off the £200 she was meant to give her for the trip. Dumb arse friend probably won't call the op to ask for £100 back because she made herself look stupid. Do you get it now?

Carpediemmakeitcount · 31/10/2023 22:22

Sunandsea26 · 31/10/2023 20:37

The op has only posted two posts it's not that hard to read two posts. The op has a shit stupid friend.

I think it’s highly unlikely to make a mistake through online banking, I’m surprised so many people think that’s what’s happened. you have to input the amount and then verify the amount.. there’s normally at least 2-3 steps, it’s much more likely that the friend paid the right amount (which COINCIDENTALLY covers what op has asked for + half the fuel) and thinks the op is asking for more..

im not entirely sure this entire post isn’t fake though tbf, it’s vague & could be taken as confrontational to say ‘that’s not what we agreed’ why not just say, ‘you’ve paid me too much’ like a normal person would?

Annahh · 31/10/2023 22:56

Any update?

Crazydonkeylady · 31/10/2023 23:01

jesshomeEd · 29/10/2023 23:20

I'd say no problem, £200 for your share of the £416 for event/hotel, plus £90 for your share of fuel - I'll send you £10 for my Subway.

Definitely this approach!

LadyThatLaunches · 01/11/2023 00:25

Sounds like she's accidentally paid you the right amount to be honest. £200 + £90 for fuel.

Indeed.

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 01/11/2023 00:35

@Shutthefrontdoor99
You say adults don't need this extra stress, but what if OP's friend was experiencing something at the time? OP said herself that she had sent what could be construed as a tetchy message with screwy emoji, so possibly the friend took it that the extra she had put in had offended OP for not being enough and that OP wanted more. While OP had meant it to say that it was more than they had agreed!!
I hope OP & her friend get past this and are able to keep their friendship!
