DP says I'm selfish for having DD's birthday cake gluten free

Basically thread title.

DD turns one at the start of December. I've arranged for a local baker to make a cake for her. I asked for it to be gluten free as I have celiac disease.

DP said this was selfish. His reasoning being that gluten free cakes aren't as nice as normal cakes. He can't seem to come up with any other reason.

I just wanted to eat some of DDs first birthday cake.

Your DH is a dick.

LightDrizzle · 24/10/2023 20:07

As above.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/10/2023 20:08

In your scenario yanbu.

SaracensMavericks · 24/10/2023 20:08

I can see both sides of this. Maybe two cakes is the only solution!

Cherryana · 24/10/2023 20:08

YANBU

He is being unreasonable.

M and S gluten free chocolate cakes are just as nice. So its not true in every case and I am sure a baker will do a great job.

SirenSays · 24/10/2023 20:08

Two cakes! I've never heard anyone say anything nice about GF cakes

PastTheGin · 24/10/2023 20:09

YANBU, and your dh is an idiot.

SilverChairs · 24/10/2023 20:09

Gluten free cakes are gross to be fair, who else will be eating it?

ProfessorInkling · 24/10/2023 20:09

What a dick.

I make GF cakes often with ground almonds - delicious.

connu · 24/10/2023 20:09

My gluten free cake is delish. Your husband is a selfish tw@t

ColleenDonaghy · 24/10/2023 20:10

YANBU at all. I thought it was going to be that DD doesn't like gluten free cake - a one year old? Knock yourself out.

xyz111 · 24/10/2023 20:10

I've had GF cake before and it's been fine!!

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/10/2023 20:10

How many people will be eating it, just you 3 or a party?

If the latter then have two cakes. I’ve got a close coeliac friend and always cater for her and I’m a pretty good baker but I wouldn’t make everyone else eat gf baking, it’s always different if it’s sponge. It’s the texture.

Iphianassa · 24/10/2023 20:10

M&S gluten-free cakes are delicious. I particularly like the coffee and walnut one, but the chocolate, lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge ones are good, too.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 24/10/2023 20:10

Yeah, I'm vegan but I don't expect any cakes to be vegan apart from my own birthday cake. Didn't even get to try my wedding cake. Vegan cake isn't great, gluten free cake isn't great. I know obviously vegan isn't the same as gluten free but I think it's the same principle.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/10/2023 20:11

I make a GF chocolate cake that is nicer than proper cake...

Generalisations are useless... there's loads of rubbish gluten cakes too.

Changeling78 · 24/10/2023 20:11

I have to agree with your DH. Don’t inflict a gluten free cake on everyone 😂

Precipice · 24/10/2023 20:11

So the options are that one person finds the cake less nice than it could be or that one person can't eat it at all? Yet your 'DH' thinks you're the one being selfish?

Some gluten-free cakes can be very nice. Just like some normal cakes can be horrid.

GreigeO · 24/10/2023 20:11

How many people are going to be eating it?

PlantDoctor · 24/10/2023 20:11

Coffeerum · 24/10/2023 20:07

Your DH is a dick.

Yup

Shadowboy · 24/10/2023 20:11

my husband is GF. We always order GF. I would never leave out a family member in a family celebration. His intolerance is part of who he is. If I was nut free I would expect a birthday celebration to be free of nuts.

Gluten free cakes can be fab- the last one we had, no one noticed and so many people commented oh how tasty the cake was.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/10/2023 20:11

He can buy himself a cake. And eat the whole thing.

Pitstop1986 · 24/10/2023 20:11

I'm gluten free and all the baking that I do is gluten free. DH has been eating gluten free cakes since we moved in together and has never complained once that it wasn't nice.

Gluten free bread on the other hand he won't touch with a barge pole.

Get the gluten free cake. If DH is so upset, get him a cupcake separately

potatoheads · 24/10/2023 20:12

So your dh thinks you are selfish for ordering a cake everyone can eat albeit a compromised cake whilst he thinks he is reasonable expecting a cake that he wants but that the mother of the child can not eat.
Does he understand what selfish means?

Taylorswiftserastour · 24/10/2023 20:12

He's a dick. Get the gluten free cake. You deserve it.
