Sister on holiday with Covid

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:08

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

Yabu. Covid is everywhere. There are no rules to isolate anymore and barely anyone is testing.
It’s a mild cold now. We live with it

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 13/10/2023 14:12

Yabu!

Of course you are!

Catza · 13/10/2023 14:12

There are no isolation rules in place and you can't police it. Getting annoyed over this is a bit pointless.

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:13

Seriously im BU? It's on the rise again, so even more reason to isolate surely?

Especially on a cruise when it's literally a Petrie dish on the sea?

She can't isolate because she isn't at home ( and i assume that are not acutely unwell) There are no guidelines or rules that say she cannot be out. It is what it is. You need to get over yourself making her feel bad for something that only you are still obsessed about!

liveforsummer · 13/10/2023 14:14

Why on earth did you instruct her to pack a test anyway? YABU the holiday is nearly over and she's having the decency to stay outside and wear a mask on the plane which is more than most will do. The ship and any condensed public place anywhere will be rife with covid. Cruise ships will be among the worst, she likely caught it on board. That's just how it is now. I hope she's feeling ok and has had a good hlidau

avemariiiaa · 13/10/2023 14:14

I would mind your own business. It doesn't affect you.

There is no legal obligation to isolate or declare a positive test. Or even test atall.

Validus · 13/10/2023 14:15

YABU. Stay out of it.

TheCunctator · 13/10/2023 14:15

You are being ridiculous, OP.

BibbleandSqwauk · 13/10/2023 14:15

No. Post vaccine for most people it's no more inconvenient than any other cold type illness. We are way beyond isolating and so on.

LIZS · 13/10/2023 14:15

Unfortunately cruises are rife with covid and all sorts of illnesses. Ideally they should wait until they are clear to fly but she can hardly stay on board until then.

MoggyP · 13/10/2023 14:15

YANBU

She can't leave the ship, but she should not be leaving her cabin (if she were in UK then it's stay home for 5 days unless absolutely essential)

And of course the ship's medical team need to know about a communicable disease on board, whether it's covid, D&V, impetigo, chicken pox or whatever.
Honestly, I wonder sometimes if covid is doing something to people's cognitive function, as basic common sense seems to have vanished

Catza · 13/10/2023 14:15

The latest variants have been milder and while long term risks exists, they are on par with complications with any other viral infection of that magnitude. If we insist everyone with Covid isolates, then we have to insist anyone with tonsillitis or seasonal cold and flu does the same. Do you? Or is this something you only feel towards Covid? Because if you do, then it is definitely unreasonable.

Lemonyfuckit · 13/10/2023 14:17

But what would you have her do OP other than isolate in her cabin for the last day? - presumably she wouldn't be able to get any food in that case without eating in one of the cruise ship restaurants (unless they do room service?) - and she'd still have to get her flight home as planned as it's not as if she could just stay on the ship in her cabin past the end of her holiday until she tests negative, and it's not like she could claim on insurance to stay on in a hotel and change her flight, so honestly what is the point? Stay locked in her cabin for the last day but still have to a) go to a restaurant and b) go on the plane - so how much difference in that case really does it make if she's by the pool versus in her cabin, other than being a martyr?

Your suggestion seems a bit impractical really.

Universalsnail · 13/10/2023 14:17

To be honest in her situation I wouldn't have tested. Ignorance is bliss and all that.

Gymmum82 · 13/10/2023 14:18

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:14

Especially on a cruise when it's literally a Petrie dish on the sea?

Exactly. So there’s even less point. Probably half the ship have it and aren’t testing

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:18

@Catza I've never had it (as far as I am aware).
I work with vulnerable people so I still test twice a week. I feel very strong about Covid as I have seen how it has affected people.

OP posts:
MikeWozniaksMohawk · 13/10/2023 14:19

Would you be saying the same thing to her if she had the same symptoms but it wasn’t covid? I think people are still so triggered by the word covid that they think it’s something special that needs to be treated differently. It was, certainly, but not anymore. Of course it’s on the rise again, just like other coughs and colds and flu viruses. It is that time of year. Yes by all means be sensible and wear a mask in crowded areas/on a plane/at the GP but otherwise life goes on just as it does every year at this time. The more vulnerable amongst us take precautions knowing there are lots of viruses and bugs around.

Me either!!

Won't be buying 'tests' ever, that's for sure!

She wasn't going to test - but I got her on WhatsApp video call and made her and her child. I'm meant to be picking them up from the airport tomorrow but I have told her she will need to make alternative plans to get home.

WhateverMate · 13/10/2023 14:21

YABU

Anyway she would’ve been contagious long before she took the test you randomly made her pack 🙄

junbean · 13/10/2023 14:21

You're not wrong. But efforts to curb it only work if everyone does them. They never worked and never will. I test and isolate so I have a clear conscience. People are still dying from it. People are still getting Long Covid. Just look at the other responses here. Very few care. Utter selfishness. It would be easier for you to do what's right in your mind, and not care what anyone else is doing. Sad facts.

Nonsense. We are expected to come in to work providing we are well enough. No luxury of 5 days any longer

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 13/10/2023 14:22

'Made her and her child' you made them test!
Dear god!
