Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

Especially on a cruise when it's literally a Petrie dish on the sea?

No it isn't. That would sink.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 13/10/2023 15:41

Yabu. No way would I miss a holiday due to having covid now.

WhateverMate · 13/10/2023 15:41

It’s a bit weird that the sister even mentioned that she was Ill to the OP.

I mean why would you, knowing how OTT she is?

Allosaur · 13/10/2023 15:41

YANBU, OP! Covid is not just a mild cold, it is multi-organ and the effects last much longer. My friend just lost her dad to it, who was healthy and only 55! I've had it twice, and I still have side effects almost a year later.

Right ok, I've accepted I'm BU. But she's been told to make other plans to get back from the airport tomorrow as I'm not putting mine or my families health at risk.

Well unless you intend to stay at home 24/7 chances are you will get Covid at some point ...

Are your family particularly vulnerable?

Tryingmybestadhd · 13/10/2023 15:46

Why ? They are arriving tomorrow , what do you expect her to do , quarantine in the boat for 2 weeks ? Are you paying for that ? Covid is everywhere learn to live with it or protect yourself and don’t go places

WinterDeWinter · 13/10/2023 15:47

‘wilful ignorance’ is exactly right. Those who say it’s just a cold don’t give a fuck about others but are (just about) too embarrassed to say it out loud.

if you’ve not become aware of the many many people who are suffering long term or permanent damage from Covid - even asymptomatic Covid - then it’s because you get your information from a rag with an ideological agenda.

VainAbigail · 13/10/2023 15:47

You ‘told her’ this, and you ‘made her’ that. OMG op you sound seriously bossy and you really need to wind your neck in. FFS this is a grown woman you’re bossing around here!

x2boys · 13/10/2023 15:48

LlynTegid · 13/10/2023 15:19

I agree with you OP. Not everyone on a cruise will be a healthy person, and I remember at one stage in early 2020 there was a cruise ship that had so many deaths it was listed alongside the death toll from individual countries.

That's because in 2020 ,we didn't have vaccines and it was a,novel.virus etc ,nearly four years on things are very different.

Iknowthis1 · 13/10/2023 15:49

I'm going to go against the grain her and say YANBU.

Sick people shouldn't be milling about passing on whatever they've got, covid or not.

Lose10kyesterday · 13/10/2023 15:50

I don't think you're being at all unreasonable, particularly in your own circumstances, @CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator. People replying that you are being unreasonable are just being blasé about other people's health. We still don't know the long-term side effects of Covid and not everyone is having a "mild illness like a cold", that's just wishful thinking.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/10/2023 15:50

Depends where she is. Some other countries still have restrictions around covid and isolation periods.

MiddleParking · 13/10/2023 15:51

Laughing at your other sister picking her up 😂 not too arsed about your family getting the cold after all! Don’t worry I’m sure they’ll be saying really nice and serious things about your caring nature on the journey.

twostraws · 13/10/2023 15:52

You do all know not everyone is vaccinated, right? And whilst most of them are tin foil hat idiots, it doesn't mean they deserve to die or get Long Covid. The assumptions on this thread that everyone who gets Covid will be fine are staggering!

Although younger people are going on cruises these days, there are still also a lot of older guests who would not fare well should they catch Covid.

You realise many people just have to get on with it and have to go to work etc with Covid ?
I realise it affects everyone differently and there are still.and will.slways,be some people who get very ill with Covid and some might die ( like with other virus,s ) but we are in a very different position than we were four years ago

TrashedSofa · 13/10/2023 15:53

All of this definitely happened.

diddl · 13/10/2023 15:53

I think that if you don't want to collect her that's up to you.

I have asthma so am still wary & would probably avoid someone who I know has it.

Will you now be avoiding your other sister who is collecting her?

I’ll say it out loud. If someone is that vulnerable then they need to be taking precautions in line with their personal risk factors. Those precautions don’t include others locking themselves away to their own detriment.

Well if they’re willingly unvaccinated it absolutely does mean they deserve to manage their own behaviour to avoid catching covid or deal with the consequences, and not expect others to adapt theirs. Quite unbelievable you’d think it doesn’t.

If people choose not to.vaccinate ( other than those that can't ) that's on them they can expect other,s to stay at home because of choices THEY have made .

alpenguin · 13/10/2023 15:24

It is not a mild cold. People are still dying.
i have it for the third time in a few months and I already had permanent heart and lung damage from getting it last year. Colds have never done that to me. Stop being so wilfully ignorant

People die from all sorts of things. I’ve also had it 3 times and am ok. A colleague has lung damage from pneumonia due to a cold. Not Covid. Friend has myocarditis (heart muscle damage) from black mould in her house.
For most people it is a mild cold

TrashedSofa · 13/10/2023 16:01

The OPs story is made up, but I must say even before covid I assumed cruise ships were full of illnesses. I'd never get on one if I weren't prepared to be exposed to all the bugs and viruses that are currently in circulation.

Topseyt123 · 13/10/2023 16:03

I wouldn't have bothered testing. In fact, I can't remember the last time I even bought a test kit.

I'm up to date with my vaccines. I had my flu and Covid boosters last weekend. If I feel well then I will go places and do what I want to. If I feel rough I will stay at home for a few days until I feel better. That will do.

This ridiculous hysteria around Covid needs to stop now. We need to just live with it. Some people can get seriously ill from colds and flu, yet so many still fixate on Covid as if no other problems exist.

@BogRollBOGOF no, our other sister is collecting her...

At least she has one decent sister!
