Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

'Made her and her child' you made them test!
Dear god!

Yes I absolutely did.
I told her if she wanted a lift home from the airport then she wasn't getting in my car if she was positive. I have myself and my family to protect too!

At this stage, you are being ridiculous OP. So many people are walking around with Covid right now. Get a grip.

Gymmum82 · 13/10/2023 14:09

Yabu. Covid is everywhere. There are no rules to isolate anymore and barely anyone is testing.
It’s a mild cold now. We live with it

Yep this. It's winter and unfortunately there's germs everywhere.

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 13/10/2023 14:23

@MoggyP

Er no.... in the U.K. it is NOT 'stay at home unless it's essential' 😂

You been under a rock??

MoggyP · 13/10/2023 14:24

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 13/10/2023 14:19

Would you be saying the same thing to her if she had the same symptoms but it wasn’t covid? I think people are still so triggered by the word covid that they think it’s something special that needs to be treated differently. It was, certainly, but not anymore. Of course it’s on the rise again, just like other coughs and colds and flu viruses. It is that time of year. Yes by all means be sensible and wear a mask in crowded areas/on a plane/at the GP but otherwise life goes on just as it does every year at this time. The more vulnerable amongst us take precautions knowing there are lots of viruses and bugs around.

I would be

The medical team need to know what's going round on the ship - whether covid or not - as it's not a typical environment and sometimes additional actions are required.

Covid is not like the common cold - that's just a myth designed to give comfort and help inure people to repeat bouts of a disease with potential to be v nasty indeed and whose longer term effects aren't yet known (the other main tactic being to mock those who point out the uncomfortable parts of the evidence)

ChickpeaPie · 13/10/2023 14:25

Is it 2020 again?

I also work with vulnerable people and am expected to go to work with covid. Although, we can’t access tests and there’s no requirement to test so I wouldn’t know anyway.

you are being completely and utterly unreasonable

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:26

Right ok, I've accepted I'm BU. But she's been told to make other plans to get back from the airport tomorrow as I'm not putting mine or my families health at risk.

Nonsense. We are expected to come in to work providing we are well enough. No luxury of 5 days any longer

Yes I was wondering what the PP meant by ‘five days’??

Some of us don’t get that luxury when there are bills to pay.

BethDuttonsTwin · 13/10/2023 14:27

Well my children have been told if they have covid they must return to school as soon as they feel well enough to, even if they're still testing positive so I think the days of self isolation are long gone.

RisingSunn · 13/10/2023 14:27

Yabvu…

You’re lucky she was honest about the result.

She wasn't going to test - but I got her on WhatsApp video call and made her and her child. I'm meant to be picking them up from the airport tomorrow but I have told her she will need to make alternative plans to get home.

You sound exhausting.

niclw · 13/10/2023 14:30

It is lunchtime in my school and im sat in a room where I've had approx. 140 students so far today and another 30 to go. Covid is everywhere. We've students walking down the corridor announcing that they are feeling rough but not bad enough to stay home but they tested positive. There are no requirements to isolate. The people around her are probably safer being in the fresh air than I am. I'm assuming that you have children who are in school. They probably have classmates with it. I have colleagues in school who have also tested positive but are here. They all feel like they have a cold. Anyone could catch it anywhere at the moment.

OK the published wording is "try and stay at home for 5 days" but other public statements have been using the terminology of "essential" - on the grounds that unless essential, home is where you should be. Longer if your symptoms have not gone by day 5 (up until the time they have gone)

No, I'm not under a rock. Just aware of the current guidance.

But it is correct that you do not need to test. But if you do and it comes back positive, then yes you should be isolating at home

sonjadog · 13/10/2023 14:31

Your choice not to pick them up, absolutely. But you can't police other people's lives like this.

Onelifeonly · 13/10/2023 14:31

YABU. There are no rules to isolate any more. People with covid should do what theyd do with any other contagious illness - only stay home if they are too unwell to go out / work etc.

Most people have had vaccinations and have had exposure to the virus in its previous/ current forms and most have knowingly had it too, so have received at least partial immunity from that too.

Malificent1 · 13/10/2023 14:32

Is your dc at school or nursery OP? You do realise it’s rife in schools again?

You are being ridiculous and hysterical.

skippy67 · 13/10/2023 14:33

YABU.

pizzaHeart · 13/10/2023 14:34

Universalsnail · 13/10/2023 14:17

To be honest in her situation I wouldn't have tested. Ignorance is bliss and all that.

Edited

Me too and I consider myself cautious.

Yodeleyyyyheeeeee · 13/10/2023 14:34

You need to get over yourself OP. Telling your sister what and what not to do. Flipping hysterical you are.

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 13/10/2023 14:35

Half the people i work with have it and nobody could care less about it.....none of the buggers wear masks or use sanitizer so no point! It's how it is!

Neriah · 13/10/2023 14:38

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:14

Especially on a cruise when it's literally a Petrie dish on the sea?

In which case it's rather late now!

She really needs to stop letting you dictate her conduct to her - and you need to stop telling her what to do. You do you, and leave here to do her.

Mindymomo · 13/10/2023 14:41

She needs to speak to the medical centre on cruise ship, they will advise her what she should do. Yes, it’s all around, but personally I wouldn’t want to fly home knowing I had Covid. That’s what having insurance with Covid cover will help with.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/10/2023 14:43

CarlosSainzAKASmoothOperator · 13/10/2023 14:26

Right ok, I've accepted I'm BU. But she's been told to make other plans to get back from the airport tomorrow as I'm not putting mine or my families health at risk.

Will that now involve public transport now?
You were accusing her of selfishness for going about her business on the cruise and now you're increasing her exposure to a wider pool of people?
There's an irony there...
